Participation pattern of methadone users and its association with social connection and HIV status: Analyses of electronic health records data.

BACKGROUND: HIV spread in injecting drug users (IDU) occurs efficiently between individuals within their social networks. While methadone maintenance treatment has long known to be effective in combating HIV transmission in IDU, the impacts of one's social connections and HIV status have not been well characterised. A study was conducted with the objective of differentiating the pattern of treatment participation between HIV-positive and negative methadone users and to understand its association with social connections with peers. METHODS: Attendance data in one calendar year were extracted f

Feeling angry about current health status: using a population survey to determine the association with demographic, health and social factors.

BACKGROUND: Feeling angry about their health status may influence disease progression in individuals, creating a greater burden on the health care system. Identifying associations between different variables and feeling angry about health status may assist health professionals to improve health outcomes. This study used path analysis to explore findings from a population-based survey, informed by qualitative descriptions obtained from focus groups, to determine the prevalence of health-related anger within the community and variables associated with reporting health-related anger. METHODS: A

Self-esteem and fear of negative evaluation as mediators between family socioeconomic status and social anxiety in Chinese emerging adults.

AIMS: The social causation hypothesis suggests that the stress in connection with a depressing social position results in the development of mental disorders. This study examines the psychological mechanisms underlying the link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and social anxiety in Chinese emerging adults. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was given to a representative sample (N = 717) of undergraduate students (17-23 years old) at three universities in China. Correlational and structural equation modeling analyses were employed to test the hypothesized three-path effect of

Differential responses of brain, gonad and muscle steroid levels to changes in social status and sex in a sequential and bidirectional hermaphroditic fish.

Sex steroids can both modulate and be modulated by behavior, and their actions are mediated by complex interactions among multiple hormone sources and targets. While gonadal steroids delivered via circulation can affect behavior, changes in local brain steroid synthesis also can modulate behavior. The relative steroid load across different tissues and the association of these levels with rates of behavior have not been well studied. The bluebanded goby (Lythrypnus dalli) is a sex changing fish in which social status determines sexual phenotype. We examined changes in steroid levels in brain, g

Gonadal steroid modulation of the limbic-hypothalamic- pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis is influenced by social status in female rhesus monkeys.

Chronic stress can have a deleterious effect on the re-productive axis that, for females, is manifested in an increased incidence of infertility. However, gonadal steroids may, in turn, affect a female's response to stress as measured by activity within the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (LHPA) axis. What is not clear is whether a history of exposure to stress modifies the effect of gonadal steroids on LHPA responsivity. Rhesus monkeys present a unique opportunity to assess LHPA responsivity when housed socially in groups. Under these situations, monkeys exhibit a rich network of affili

Depressive disorders in long-term survivors of stroke. Associations with demographic and social factors, functional status, and brain lesion volume.

Sixty surviving patients from a community-based stroke register who had computerised tomography (CT) scan evidence of a single brain lesion were interviewed three to five years after their first ever stroke. Depression (DSM-III-R major depression, partially resolved major depression, and dysthymia) was present in 11 (18%) of the patients and was associated with impaired physical and cognitive functioning, greater age, residence in an institution, absence of a close personal relationship, and larger original brain lesion. Of these variables, only functional dependence (odds ratio 16.4; confiden

Relationship between maternal mental status and social supports during pregnancy and until one month after childbirth in a local city.

The aim of this study was to clarify the relationship between maternal mental status and social supports during pregnancy and until one month after childbirth in order to evaluate the actual situation in a local city. A survey was conducted on 78 pregnant women who completed the CES-D (depression score), STAI (anxiety score) and Social Support Scale. Data were collected four times : during the second trimester, the third trimester, postpartum hospitalization, and 1 month after childbirth. The CES-D and STAI scores were initially high during pregnancy and decreased during the postpartum period.

Postpartum mood among universally screened high and low socioeconomic status patients during COVID-19 social restrictions in New York City.

The mental health effects of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on postpartum women are of increasing concern among mental health practitioners. To date, only a handful of studies have explored the emotional impact of the pandemic surrounding pregnancy and none have investigated the consequence of pandemic-related social restrictions on the postpartum mood of those living among different socioeconomic status (SES). All postpartum patients appearing to the Mount Sinai Health System for their postpartum appointmen

Health behaviour, social support, socio-economic status and the 5-year progression of multimorbidity: Results from the MultiCare Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Multimorbidity in elderly patients is a major challenge for physicians, because of a high prevalence of and associations with many adverse outcomes. However, the mechanisms of progressing multimorbidity are not well-understood. The aim of our study was to determine if the progression of multimorbidity is influenced by health behaviour and social support and to analyse if the patients' socio-economic status had an effect on these prognostic factors. METHODS: The study was designed as prospective cohort study based on interviews of 158 GPs and 3189 patients randomly selected from GP

Long-term results of a three-week intensive cardiac out-patient rehabilitation program in motivated patients with low social status.

UNLABELLED: The short-term benefits of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) are well established. In contrast, well-documented long-term results are rare. The objective of this longitudinal multi-centre observational study was to examine the effects of intensive out-patient CR in a larger patient cohort, especially for patients with low social status. We present the final results 24 months after CR. METHODS: The study group of 327 patients (288 men, 39 women, aged 56.0+/-10.8 years, coronary artery disease in 295, other cardiac diseases in 32) participated in a 3- week CR programme followed by clinica

How does subjective social status get under the skin? A scoping review of associations with biomarkers of the primary stress systems.

Socioeconomic disparities in health are well established, and accumulating evidence highlights that subjective social status is a unique predictor of health beyond objective socioeconomic indicators. Theoretical frameworks suggest that psychobiological stress mechanisms are key pathways linking subjective social status to health. However, no comprehensive review has yet synthesized evidence on subjective social status in relation to biomarkers of the primary stress systems. In this scoping review, we systematically identified and mapped studies investigating associations between subjective soc

Socioeconomic status and depressive symptoms among older adults in China: The mediating role of cognitive function, lifestyle and social participation.

INTRODUCTION: Socioeconomic status (SES) is a key risk factor for depression in older adults, while cognitive function, lifestyle and social participation also have an impact on depression. This study aimed to investigate the mediating role of cognitive function, lifestyle and social participation in the association between SES and depressive symptoms among older adults in China. METHODS: Data were derived from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS) (2017-2018). A total of 7595 community-dwelling adults aged ≥65 years were included. Depressive symptoms were assessed using t

Causal effects of point-of-sale cigarette promotions and subjective social status on cigarette craving: a randomised within-person experiment.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking continues to be a leading cause of preventable deaths in the USA, in part because the USA has not adopted the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. One way the tobacco industry counteracts tobacco control policies is by heavily advertising cigarettes at the point of sale in retailers (eg, at the cash register) and by offering discounts on cigarettes. DESIGN: A within-subject experimental design with adults who smoke cigarettes daily (n=281) investigated whether: (1) exposure to images of cigarette promotions in an online experiment is associated with great

The association between social drivers of health, HIV status and physical activity with perceived stress in U.S. women with or without HIV.

BACKGROUND: The physiological adaptation to chronic stress can have deleterious health effects. Although higher physical activity (PA) has been linked to lower stress, it is unknown whether social driver of health (SDOH) burden and HIV status impact the stress reduction effects of PA due to their unique contributions to stress. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional sample (n = 444) from the Women's Interagency HIV Study during 2014-2019, multivariate linear regression modeling was used to estimate the effect of SDOH burden and PA on stress. SDOH burden was defined as the sum of individual-level in

Moderation of marital status and living arrangements in the relationship between social participation and life satisfaction among older Indian adults.

Social participation is considered one of the central components of successful and healthy aging. This study aimed to examine the moderating role of marital status and living arrangement with social participation and its association with life satisfaction of older Indian adults. Samples of 31,464 individuals aged ≥ 60 years were extracted from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India, wave-1. Descriptive statistics, bivariate analysis, and multivariable linear regression were performed for the analysis. The moderation effect of marital status and living arrangements on the relationship between s

Socioeconomic status and race as social determinants of health to be considered in clinical use of pre-season vestibular and oculomotor tests for concussion.

BACKGROUND: Aside from racial and socioeconomic disparities in computerized neurocognitive testing and symptomology, there is a scarcity of research representing more diverse populations on other widely used tests for concussion, including vestibular and visual assessment. AIM: The aim of the study was to investigate if racial and socioeconomic differences exist on baseline vestibular/ocular motor screening (VOMS) and King-Devick (K-D) test performance in high school student-athletes. METHODS: A total of 670 participants (66.1% White, 33.9% Black) with a mean age of 15.43±1.2 years were admi

Psychological distress in elderly people is associated with diet, wellbeing, health status, social support and physical functioning- a HUNT3 study.

BACKGROUND: The increasing proportion of people growing old, demands expanded knowledge of how people can experience successful aging. Having a good life while growing old is dependent on several factors such as nutrition, physical health, the ability to perform activities of daily living, lifestyle and psychological health. Furthermore, unhealthy food intake is found to be a modifiable risk factor for depression in elderly people. To promote elderly's health and wellbeing, the influence of nutrition, lifestyle, physical functioning, and social support on psychological distress needs exploring
