The structure of social exchange in self-help support groups: development of a measure.

Self-help support groups are indigenous community resources designed to help people manage a variety of personal challenges, from alcohol abuse to xeroderma pigmentosum. The social exchanges that occur during group meetings are central to understanding how people benefit from participation. This paper examines the different types of social exchange behaviors that occur during meetings, using two studies to develop empirically distinct scales that reliably measure theoretically important types of exchange. Resource theory informed the initial measurement development efforts. Exploratory factor

Health-related quality of life experiences in children and adolescents born with esophageal atresia: A Swedish-German focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal atresia (EA) is a rare malformation of the esophagus, which needs surgical treatment. Survival rates have reached 95%, but esophageal and respiratory morbidity during childhood is frequent. Child and parent perspectives and cultural and age-specific approaches are fundamental in understanding children's health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and when developing a pediatric HRQoL questionnaire. We aimed to increase the conceptual and cross-cultural understanding of condition-specific HRQoL experiences among EA children from Sweden and Germany and investigate content valid

Use of the PROMIS and Neuro-QoL to Evaluate Health-Related Quality of Life following Unilateral Subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND: Subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN DBS) improves Parkinson's disease (PD)-related motor symptoms, but how STN DBS impacts various aspects of patient-perceived health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is less clear. The Patient-Reported Outcome Measurement Instrument (PROMIS) and Quality of Life in Neurological Disorders (Neuro-QoL), National Institutes of Health computer adaptive inventories, are T-scored to a normative reference sample, and assesses 16 domains of a patient's HRQoL. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study evaluated the convergent validity of a novel PROM

Professional isolation and perceived quality of work life in flexible-employment settings: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines whether professional-isolation scores are associated with perceived quality of work life (QWL) beyond an archived social-isolation index in workers recruited from flexible-employment settings. Perceived career-development constraints are examined as a secondary concurrent correlate. METHODS: Retained questionnaire responses from 237 workers recruited in China were reanalyzed using ordinal measurement assessment, covariate-adjusted composite-score regression, and 5,000 case-resampling bootstrap replications. RESULTS: Higher professional-isolation scores were

Social Media Activities With Different Content Characteristics and Adolescent Mental Health: Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent mental health concerns are rising in the United States, with social media often cited as a contributing factor, although research findings remain mixed. A key limitation is the simplistic view of social media use, which fails to consistently predict well-being. Scholars call for a more nuanced framework and a better understanding of how social media use influences adolescent mental health through various psychosocial mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: Using the Multidimensional Model of Social Media Use, we explored how 4 activities with various content characteristics (intimate di

Listening to those who know: The Need for forming advisory boards with lived experiences in global mental health research.

Global mental health research increasingly prioritizes cultural relevance and equity, yet the integration of lived experience remains limited, particularly in mental health research where social and cultural contexts shape distress and help-seeking. This commentary draws on longitudinal engagement with Youth Advisory Boards (YABs) and Community Advisory Boards (CABs) in Nepal, informed by roles spanning advisory membership to doctoral research. It highlights how advisory boards contribute across the research lifecycle, including shaping research questions, refining instruments, strengthening e

On the Structure of Fears of Evaluation: Testing for a General Factor and Its Validity in Bifactor Models.

The Bivalent Fear of Evaluation model posits that individuals with social-anxiety experience both Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) and Fear of Positive Evaluation (FPE). Previous research has empirically supported a two-factor structure comprising FNE and FPE. More recently, theoretical reviews and empirical studies have turned to a broader construct, Fear of General Evaluation (FGE). Here, we sought to examine the existence and validity of FGE in two samples (644 Chinese undergraduates and 448 junior high school students). We captured two distinct measures of FNE and FPE, along with mental-h

Examination of the known-groups validity of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale.

We examined the known-groups validity of the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS) by comparing the scores of patients with social anxiety disorder (n=46), generalized anxiety disorder plus an additional diagnosis of social anxiety disorder (n=15), generalized anxiety disorder without social anxiety disorder (n=12), and nonanxious controls (n=34). The LSAS total score discriminated significantly among all pairs of groups. Similar analyses were conducted on the original LSAS subscales and additional subscales derived from the factor-analytic work of Safren et al. [1999]. Original subscales show

Digital Biomarkers of Social Anxiety Severity: Digital Phenotyping Using Passive Smartphone Sensors.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder is a highly prevalent and burdensome condition. Persons with social anxiety frequently avoid seeking physician support and rarely receive treatment. Social anxiety symptoms are frequently underreported and underrecognized, creating a barrier to the accurate assessment of these symptoms. Consequently, more research is needed to identify passive biomarkers of social anxiety symptom severity. Digital phenotyping, the use of passive sensor data to inform health care decisions, offers a possible method of addressing this assessment barrier. OBJECTIVE: This study

Building a Brief Multidomain Questionnaire for Gambling Dual Disorder: Psychometric Validation and RDoC-Based Dimensional Structure.

OBJECTIVES: Gambling Disorder (GD) frequently co-occurs with other mental disorders, a clinical condition termed Gambling Dual Disorder (GDD) that is often overlooked. We aimed to develop and validate a brief multidomain questionnaire to assess GDD severity within a dimensional, transdiagnostic framework. METHODS: A 55-item questionnaire was developed and tested across three phases (feasibility, reliability, validity) in 30, 57, and 223 treatment-seeking adults with DSM-5-TR GD. We assessed internal consistency, test-retest reliability, convergent validity against reference instruments (STAI,

The Prosocial and Antisocial Behaviour in Sport Scale: further evidence for construct validity and reliability.

The purpose of this research was to provide further evidence for the construct validity (i.e., convergent, concurrent, and discriminant validity) of the Prosocial and Antisocial Behaviour in Sport Scale (PABSS), an instrument that has four subscales measuring prosocial and antisocial behaviour toward teammates and opponents. We also investigated test-retest reliability and stability of the PABSS. We conducted three studies using athletes from a variety of team sports. In Study 1, participants (N = 129) completed the PABSS and measures of physical and verbal aggression, hostility, anger, moral

Reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Addiction Severity Index (ASI-J).

The Addiction Severity Index (ASI) is a frequently used clinical and research instrument that collects data from substance abusers in seven problem areas: medical, employment, alcohol, drug use, legal, family-social functioning, and psychiatric status. In each area, the ASI provides a composite score and severity rating that estimate the seriousness of the problem and the client's need for treatment. In the present study, we investigated the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the ASI (ASI-J). One hundred and eleven subjects with a history of drug abuse were interviewed with a

Developing an instrument to measure quality of life of patients with hyperhidrosis.

Quality of life (QOL) is an index of the state of wellness of an individual. The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to measure quality of life of patients with hyperhidrosis. With a multi- dimensional model of QOL as the conceptual framework for instrument development, the study started from literature review which was followed by interviews with patients, staff nurses, and doctors to generate the original items for the instrument. The validity and reliability then were assessed. Six experts performed content validity (CVI =.70). Internal consistency and construct validity asse

[Psychometric properties of the Activities Daily Life Scale (ADL)].

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in social functioning are an important core feature of mental health. Recently in France, the Activities Daily Life (ADL) scale has been proposed by the French authorities to assess social functioning for all hospitalized patients in a psychiatric ward. The perspective is to use this scale in the financing and organization of mental health services in France. The ADL scale is a 6-item (dressing/undressing, walking/mobility, eating/drinking, using toilets, behaviour, relationships/communication) heteroquestionnaire completed by a health care professional at the beginning of

A meta-analysis of social cognitive deficits in schizophrenia: Does world region matter?

Individuals with schizophrenia (SCZs) demonstrate social cognitive (SC) deficits across a variety of social cognitive tasks: affect recognition, social perception, Theory-of-Mind (ToM), and attributional style. These tasks all use socially-relevant words, social scenarios, clothing, faces and voices that may make their application to different cultural contexts problematic. However a paucity of research has investigated the cross-cultural validity of SC measures. We meta-analyzed the literature investigating differences in social cognitive skills SCZs and matched healthy controls (NCs) across

Validity Assessment of 5 Day Repeated Forced-Swim Stress to Model Human Depression in Young-Adult C57BL/6J and BALB/cJ Mice.

The development of animal models with construct, face, and predictive validity to accurately model human depression has been a major challenge. One proposed rodent model is the 5 d repeated forced swim stress (5d-RFSS) paradigm, which progressively increases floating during individual swim sessions. The onset and persistence of this floating behavior has been anthropomorphically characterized as a measure of depression. This interpretation has been under debate because a progressive increase in floating over time may reflect an adaptive learned behavioral response promoting survival, and not d
