Youth social dynamics in low-income urban communities in Brazil: spaces, leisure, and vulnerabilities to HIV.

Given the incidence of HIV among youth in Brazil and the dismantling of educational policies on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) by the federal government (2019-2022), the lack of current national studies with heterosexual youth on these topics is worrisome. To expand this knowledge, we conducted a socioanthropological study in spaces of sociability and leisure for heterosexual youth in low-income communities in five Brazilian cities. According to our collected field observations and reports, leisure and sociability take place in the communities (dances, parties), given that economic and s

Chatbot for Social Need Screening and Resource Sharing With Vulnerable Families: Iterative Design and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Health outcomes are significantly influenced by unmet social needs. Although screening for social needs has become common in health care settings, there is often poor linkage to resources after needs are identified. The structural barriers (eg, staffing, time, and space) to helping address social needs could be overcome by a technology-based solution. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to present the design and evaluation of a chatbot, DAPHNE (Dialog-Based Assistant Platform for Healthcare and Needs Ecosystem), which screens for social needs and links patients and families to resources.

Mitigating adverse social determinants of health in the vulnerable population: Insights from a home visitation programme.

INTRODUCTION: Low-income families are exposed to adverse childhood experiences and psychosocial risks that impact child development. At the KK Women's and Children's Hospital in Singapore, Kids Integrated Development Service (KIDS0-3) is a home visitation programme that aims to optimise the development of children from low-income families. METHOD: Data comprising family demographics, maternal psychosocial risks and outcomes of child development were collated through a chart review of 469 mother-child dyads enrolled from June 2014 to October 2022. RESULTS: Based on the Family and Adult Suppor

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and associated health and social vulnerabilities in older jail inmates.

OBJECTIVES: To examine post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in older jail inmates, and to determine whether adverse social and health-related characteristics were associated with having PTSD symptoms. METHOD: We performed an exploratory cross-sectional study of 238 older (age ≥55 years) jail inmates from a county jail. PTSD symptoms were determined using the Primary Care PTSD (PC-PTSD) screen. Reporting three or more PTSD symptoms was defined as a positive screen. Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analyses were used to examine the prevalence of a positive PTSD screen an

Widening the aim of health promotion to include the most disadvantaged: vulnerable adolescents and the social determinants of health.

Growing numbers of adolescents are marginalized by social factors beyond their control, leading to poor health outcomes for their families and future generations. Although the role of the social determinants of health has been recognized for many years, there is a gap in our knowledge about the strategies needed to address these factors in health promotion. Drawing on a review of literature on health promotion for marginalized and out-of-school adolescents, this paper highlights some urgent areas of focus for researchers and policy makers addressing adolescent health. Social determinants of he

Peer status and the directionality of symptomatic behavior: prime social competence predictors of outcome for vulnerable children.

Social competence data from four target groups of vulnerable children--children of schizophrenic mothers; children of neurotic mothers; clinic children with externalizing symptomology; clinic children with internalizing symptomology--and from a large control group of their public school classmates, strongly suggest that peer-rated social incompetence and presence of externalizing behavior disorders are the best predictors of which vulnerable children run the greatest risk of poor adult outcome.

Lack of Primary Care Continuity Predicts Readmission Risk Among Socially Vulnerable Trauma Populations.

IntroductionEarly unplanned trauma readmission (UR-30) is not well-understood. Social vulnerability indices (SVIs) and primary care access were postulated as contributing factors to discharge outcomes.MethodsRetrospective propensity-matched analysis at a Level I Trauma Center compared readmitted patients (UR-30, n = 85) to those without (NoReadmission-30, n = 85). Established PCP relationship and five social vulnerability indices (SVIs) were evaluated.Results170 total patients had average age 56.6, 71.8% male, and 95.3% Caucasian. Average ISS = 9. Factors influencing COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in socially vulnerable Latinx communities in North Texas.

In the United States, COVID-19 vaccines are widely available, but vaccine hesitancy and vaccine disparities remain. Healthcare providers and community organizational leaders who serve as frontline workers and interact with vaccine-hesitant people, can provide important insights on factors that perpetuate vaccine hesitancy. These perspectives may be especially important for vaccine-hesitant people with intersecting social vulnerabilities, including racial and ethnic minorities who are also LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, or pregnant people. While predictors of COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy have be

Association Between Food Environment Characteristics and Overweight and Anemia in Socially Vulnerable Children Living in Favelas.

BACKGROUND: The food environment plays a significant role in determining children's nutritional status, especially in socially vulnerable settings, where the high availability of ultra-processed beverages can contribute to both overweight and nutritional deficiencies, such as anemia. Thus, this study aimed to assess the association between the availability of fruits, vegetables, and ultra-processed beverages in the food environment and the occurrence of overweight and anemia in children living in socially vulnerable areas. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study with an ecological component,

Examining the Role of the Social Vulnerability Index in the Association between Race/Ethnicity and Breast Cancer Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic and environmental inequities may increase vulnerability to breast cancer among racial and ethnic groups. We examined whether the social vulnerability index (SVI) mediates associations between race/ethnicity and breast cancer outcomes, including late-stage diagnosis and breast cancer-specific mortality. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 739,448 cases with breast cancer from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results 18 registries (2000-2016). Mediation analysis evaluated five 2010 SVI themes-socioeconomic status, household composition, minority st…

Association of Social and Geographic Vulnerability With In-Hospital Outcomes in Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy: Insights From a National Database.

Background Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TTC) is a transient, acute cardiac dysfunction syndrome triggered by emotional or physical stress. The pathophysiology involves catecholamine excess and microvascular dysfunction. The influence of geographic access to care and socioeconomic context on clinical outcomes remains poorly characterized. This study tested whether rural hospital setting and low community income level independently associate with adverse in-hospital outcomes among patients hospitalized with TTC. Methodology We conducted a retrospective cohort study using the 2022 National Inpatient

Maternal Obesity and Obstetric Outcomes in a Socially Vulnerable Region Within Brazil's Unified Health System.

Introduction  Obesity is a major global public health challenge and a growing concern among women of reproductive age. In Brazil, more than half of these women are overweight, and obesity substantially increases the risk of gestational complications, particularly hypertension (HTN), diabetes, and cesarean delivery. High-risk prenatal care centers within the Brazilian Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde, SUS) play a critical role in managing these conditions, especially in socioeconomically vulnerable regions. This study assessed the association between maternal obesity and childbirth
