Incorporating the Enclosure MonitoR Use (EMU) App to ZooMonitor Observations Technical Report.

Welfare audits that contain behavior and enclosure use assessments are commonly used in zoos and aquaria. However, the two components are often used separately from one another, and many enclosure use studies are limited by analytical problems, despite the fact that enclosure use indices such as Entropy, modified Spread of Participation Index, and Electivity Index are available. The dawning of behavior monitoring apps has facilitated zoo behavioral research, but some of the original challenges experienced when analyzing enclosure use remain. There is a need, therefore, to make enclosure use in

Open Office Space: The Wave of the Future for Academic Health Centers?

Facing space constraints similar to those experienced by many urban campuses, the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) looked to innovative office workplace design to curb growing facilities expenditures. Mission Hall, a new office building primarily for desktop and clinical researchers and staff, was designed as an activity-based workplace (ABW), a type of open-space design. ABW was simultaneously being proposed as the template for future UCSF desktop research workspaces. ABWs can be less costly to construct than other designs, and their mix of shared and open workspaces is intended

Risk Factors for Pediatric Deep Neck Infection Revisit After Emergency Department Discharge for Pharyngitis or Localized Neck Symptoms.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Diagnosis of deep neck space infections is challenging in children due to subtle symptoms and examination findings. However, delays in diagnosis can contribute to increased morbidity in pediatric deep neck space infection. We aimed to determine (1) the most frequent discharge diagnoses associated with emergency department (ED) visits in the 10 days before deep neck space infection diagnosis and (2) use cohorts of pediatric ED visits with these frequent diagnoses to determine factors associated with return admission with deep neck space infection. METHODS: Cross-sectional anal

The Glymphatic System: A Review of the Challenges in Visualizing its Structure and Function with MR Imaging.

The central nervous system (CNS) was previously thought to be the only organ system lacking lymphatic vessels to remove waste products from the interstitial space. Recently, based on the results from animal experiments, the glymphatic system was hypothesized. In this hypothesis, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) enters the periarterial spaces, enters the interstitial space of the brain parenchyma via aquaporin-4 (AQP4) channels in the astrocyte end feet, and then exits through the perivenous space, thereby clearing waste products. From the perivenous space, the interstitial fluid drains into the subar

Posture, locomotion, spatial orientation, and motion sickness as a function of space flight.

This article summarizes a variety of newly published findings obtained by the Neuroscience Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, and attempts to place this work within a historical framework of previous results on posture, locomotion, motion sickness, and perceptual responses that have been observed in conjunction with space flight. In this context, we have taken the view that correct transduction and integration of signals from all sensory systems is essential to maintaining stable vision, postural and locomotor control, and eye-hand coordination as components of spatial orientation. The plastici

Deconstructing arousal into wakeful, autonomic and affective varieties.

Arousal plays a central role in a wide variety of phenomena, including wakefulness, autonomic function, affect and emotion. Despite its importance, it remains unclear as to how the neural mechanisms for arousal are organized across them. In this article, we review neuroscience findings for three of the most common origins of arousal: wakeful arousal, autonomic arousal, and affective arousal. Our review makes two overarching points. First, research conducted primarily in non-human animals underscores the importance of several subcortical nuclei that contribute to various sources of arousal, mot

Study on Failure Pressure Prediction of Double Corrosion Defects in Oil and Gas Pipelines.

Corrosion defects in actual oil and gas pipelines tend to occur in clusters, and the mechanical interaction between adjacent defects alters the local stress field, thereby affecting the overall failure behavior and load-bearing capacity of the pipeline. Existing pipeline integrity assessment codes often adopt simplified treatments (e.g., the defect projection method) for multi-point corrosion, which fail to fully consider the influence of defect spacing and may lead to inaccurate (overly conservative or unsafe) evaluation results. To reveal the interaction mechanism of double-point corrosion,

Optical Clearing with Tartrazine Enables Deep Transscleral Imaging with Optical Coherence Tomography.

Suprachoroidal injections are a relatively new method of drug delivery to treat retinal disease. At present, it is difficult to visualize the distribution of injection-delivered product beneath the sclera into the suprachoroidal space. Imaging the suprachoroidal space with OCT is hindered by scattering of light from densely packed collagen fibers of the sclera, limiting depth penetration of the OCT light. In this Letter, we demonstrate the first use of tartrazine (Yellow 5) as an optical clearing agent for suprachoroidal research imaging with OCT in an ex vivo eye model. Our results show that

Spinning, hurting, still, afraid: Living life spaces with Type I Chiari Malformation.

Human geography's varied engagement with the brain has involved considerations of the way people know and respond to their environments, and their place-based experiences with emotions, mental illnesses and disorders, intellectual disabilities and particular neurological conditions. This paper argues however that this scholarship could be augmented by, and existing expertise be directed towards, considering physical brain abnormalities and injuries. As a case in point it considers the spatial experience of living with Type 1 Chiari Malformation. Through interviews with four sufferers, the rese

Musculoskeletal adaptations to weightlessness and development of effective countermeasures.

A Research Roundtable, organized by the American College of Sports Medicine with sponsorship from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, met in November 1995 to define research strategies for effective exercise countermeasures to weightlessness. Exercise was considered both independently of, and in conjunction with, other therapeutic modalities (e.g., pharmacological nutritional, hormonal, and growth-related factors) that could prevent or minimize the structural and functional deficits involving skeletal muscle and bone in response to chronic exposure to weightlessness, as well as

A Design-Conversed Strategy Establishes the Performance Safe Space for Doxorubicin Nanosimilars.

Nanomedicines exhibit multifaceted performances, yet their biopharmaceutics remain poorly understood and present several challenges in the translation from preclinical to clinical research. To address this issue and promote the production of high-quality nanomedicines, a systematic screening of the design space and in vivo performance is necessary. Establishing formulation performance specifications early on enables an informed selection of candidates and promotes the development of nanosimilars. The deconvolution of the pharmacokinetics enables the identification of key characteristics that i

Simulated weightlessness procedure, head-down bed rest has reversible effects on the metabolism of rhesus macaque.

It is a consensus in the international manned space field that factors such as microgravity during the space flight can cause anxiety, depression and other important brain function abnormalities in astronauts. However, the neural mechanism at the molecular level is still unclear. Due to the limitations of research conditions, studies of biological changes in the primate brain have been comparatively few. We took advantage of -6° head-down bed rest (HDBR), one of the most implemented space analogues on the ground, to investigate the effects of simulated weightlessness on non-human primate brain

Credibility of the evidence on green space and human health: an overview of meta-analyses using evidence grading approaches.

BACKGROUND: Green space is an important part of the human living environment, with many epidemiological studies estimating its impact on human health. However, no study has quantitatively assessed the credibility of the existing evidence, impeding their translations into policy decisions and hindering researchers from identifying new research gaps. This overview aims to evaluate and rank such evidence credibility. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline, we systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase databases for systematic reviews with meta-analyses concerning green spaces an

Modular microfluidic probe for addressable fluidic landscapes.

Applications in chemistry, biology, and diagnostics increasingly require precise and reconfigurable delivery of chemical cues on open and accessible surfaces. Achieving such spatially resolved and dynamically programmable control remains challenging with conventional microfluidic systems, whose fixed and enclosed architectures limit adaptability, scalability, and sample access. Here, we introduce a modular, 3D-printed input-processing-output-flow (IPOF) framework that enables plug-and-play reconfiguration of open-space microfluidic functions without redesigning the entire probe. This strategy
