Spatiotemporal Pattern Analysis of Scarlet Fever Incidence in Beijing, China, 2005-2014.

OBJECTIVE: To probe the spatiotemporal patterns of the incidence of scarlet fever in Beijing, China, from 2005 to 2014. METHODS: A spatiotemporal analysis was conducted at the district/county level in the Beijing region based on the reported cases of scarlet fever during the study period. Moran's autocorrelation coefficient was used to examine the spatial autocorrelation of scarlet fever, whereas the Getis-Ord Gi* statistic was used to determine the hotspot incidence of scarlet fever. Likewise, the space-time scan statistic was used to detect the space-time clusters, including the relative ri

Channel-aware low Earth orbit satellite cluster networking for space-to-Earth laser communication: reliability and bandwidth advantages.

The reliability of the space-to-Earth laser communication plays a crucial role in providing uninterrupted real-time services in satellite optical networks. In traditional satellite optical networks, the space-to-Earth laser communication is carried out using a monolithic satellite in close proximity to the target optical ground station. However, the reliability of the communication in this approach is heavily influenced by the atmospheric environment. For instance, variations in cloud thickness can cause fluctuations in the link quality of the space-to-Earth laser communication, significantly

Spatio-temporal clustering of hand, foot and mouth disease at the county level in Sichuan province, China, 2008-2013.

China has recently experienced a marked increase in the incidence of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD). Effective spatio-temporal monitoring of HFMD incidence is important for successful implementation of control and prevention measures. This study monitored county-level HFMD reported incidence rates for Sichuan province, China by examining spatio-temporal patterns. County-level data on HFMD daily cases between January 2008 and December 2013 were obtained from the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention. We first conducted purely temporal and purely spatial descriptive an

Spatio-temporal clustering analysis using two different scanning windows: A case study of dengue fever in Peninsular Malaysia.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection of humans caused by a virus of the Flaviviridae family. In Malaysia the annual incidence risk of dengue fever for the period 2000 to 2019 ranged from 30 to 390 cases per 100,000. The aim of this paper was to identify spatial, temporal and spatio-temporal clusters of dengue fever in Peninsular Malaysia for the period 2015 to 2017. Counts of confirmed incident cases of dengue fever for each of the 86 districts of Peninsular Malaysia for the period 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2017 (inclusive) and district-level census data allowed us to calculate

Hand, foot and mouth disease: spatiotemporal transmission and climate.

BACKGROUND: The Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease (HFMD) is the most common infectious disease in China, its total incidence being around 500,000~1,000,000 cases per year. The composite space-time disease variation is the result of underlining attribute mechanisms that could provide clues about the physiologic and demographic determinants of disease transmission and also guide the appropriate allocation of medical resources to control the disease. METHODS AND FINDINGS: HFMD cases were aggregated into 1456 counties and during a period of 11 months. Suspected climate attributes to HFMD were recorded mont

Numerical simulation of a susceptible-exposed-infectious space-continuous model for the spread of rabies in raccoons across a realistic landscape.

We introduce a numerical model for the spread of a lethal infectious disease in wildlife. The reference model is a Susceptible-Exposed-Infectious system where the spatial component of the dynamics is modelled by a diffusion process. The goal is to develop a model to be used for real geographical scenarios, so we do not rely upon simplifying assumptions on the shape of the region of interest. For this reason, space discretization is carried out with the finite element method on an unstructured triangulation. A diffusion term is designed to take into account landscape heterogeneities such as mou

Epidemiological and aetiological characteristics of hand, foot, and mouth disease in Sichuan Province, China, 2011-2017.

Hand, foot, and mouth disease (HFMD) remains a threat to the Asia-Pacific region. The epidemiological characteristics and pathogen spectrum of HFMD vary with space and time. These variations are crucial for HFMD interventions but poorly understood in Sichuan Province, China, particularly after the introduction of the EV-A71 vaccine. Using descriptive methods, regression analyses, spatial autocorrelation analysis, and space-time scan statistics, we analysed the epidemiological and aetiological characteristics of HFMD surveillance data in Sichuan Province between 2011 and 2017 to identify spatio

Geospatial analysis of household spread of Ebola virus in a quarantined village - Sierra Leone, 2014.

We performed a spatial-temporal analysis to assess household risk factors for Ebola virus disease (Ebola) in a remote, severely-affected village. We defined a household as a family's shared living space and a case-household as a household with at least one resident who became a suspect, probable, or confirmed Ebola case from 1 August 2014 to 10 October 2014. We used Geographic Information System (GIS) software to calculate inter-household distances, performed space-time cluster analyses, and developed Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE). Village X consisted of 64 households; 42% of househol

A random grid based molecular epidemiological study on EBLV isolates from Germany.

Germany has reported one of the highest levels of EBLV cases in bats in Europe. So far, all isolates originating from Germany have been identified as EBLV-1, using monoclonal antibodies, and a preliminary epidemiological study has indicated that there is a distinct geographical distribution of EBLV-1 in Germany. To further investigate the spatial and temporal distribution of EBLV-1 variants in Germany and their impact on molecular epidemiology, isolates were selected using a random grid sampling procedure based on GIS. Agrid layer 30 km long over the entire area of Germany was applied to 120 g

Clustered outbreak of skin and eye complaints among catering staff.

In August 2002, kitchen staff at a hotel in Central Scotland experienced skin and eye problems believed to be related to their working environment. Of a total of 20 staff, eight cooks reported problems with a painful red skin affecting the face, eyelids, side and front of neck as well as burning, gritty eyes. Five of the affected individuals were clinically assessed in April 2003. The overall clinical impression was of conjunctivitis and sunburn-like erythema. Examination of the data sheets of all cleaning agents and sprays used within the kitchen pointed against an environmental phototoxin. T

Community clusters of childhood leukemia and lymphoma: evidence of infection?

Information suggesting that infection may be an underlying cause of childhood leukemia and lymphoma includes the occasional appearance of cases in time-space clusters within communities and increased incidence after communities experience marked population influxes (population mixing). Among 50 clusters involving cases of childhood leukemia and lymphoma investigated in the United States in 1961-1977, eight showed suggestive evidence of underlying infectious causation. In seven of the eight communities, case occurrence was associated with the attendance of patients or their siblings at particul

Investigation of a cluster of Legionella pneumophila infections among staff at a federal research facility.

An epidemiologic investigation was conducted in response to a case of Legionella pneumonia in a scientist working at a federal research facility. A survey of 80 individuals working at the facility revealed that 13 (16%) had sustained prior infections with Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1 (Lps1) as measured by anti-Lps1 antibodies. Antibody-positive individuals' offices clustered around an air cooling tower and a heating, ventilation, and air conditioner unit (odds ratio = 5). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, individuals of non-white race (adjusted odds ratio = 8) and smokers (ad

Hyperendemic pulmonary tuberculosis in a Peruvian shantytown.

Estimates of the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis in developing countries are based on case reporting from local health laboratories or the annual risk of tuberculin skin test conversion. Because these methods are problematic, the authors used a multiple case ascertainment method to estimate the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis from 1989 to 1993 in a Peruvian shantytown of 34,000 inhabitants. Two methods, face-to-face interview of all local inhabitants and examination of local laboratory smear records, were used for case gathering. The number of missed cases was estimated by capture-reca
