The thesis is developed that therapy and research are not necessarily the same activity and that clinicians are not necessarily researchers. Though there are commonalities between research and therapy, especially as the use of single-subject research designs has increased, using the scientific method to guide therapy is not the same as doing science. The requirements of good therapy and good research are often different in critical ways. Both research and therapy are important to the vitality of the profession, and the profession is strengthened when the differences are acknowledged.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this exploratory study was to evaluate speech-language pathologists' (SLPs') conceptions and misconceptions about dyslexia.
METHOD: Participants were 86 school-based SLPs. They completed an online survey on which they rated their agreement and disagreement with true and false statements related to the scientific evidence about the nature of dyslexia and interventions for dyslexia, as well as common misconceptions about dyslexia.
RESULTS: There was considerable variability among SLPs' agreement and disagreement with the statements. Critically, despite abundant contrary

Fourteen Speech and Language Therapists/Pathologists (SLT/Ps) from 13 countries across 5 continents made up the International Confederation of Cleft Lip and Palate and Related Craniofacial Anomalies (ICCPCA) CLEFT 2022 Speech Taskforce. Following a group consensus activity led by an external facilitator using Lightning Design Thinking principles, "task-shifting" was identified as the topic for this Taskforce. Absence and scarcity of SLT/Ps in many parts of the world have led to non-SLT/Ps delivering speech and language therapy services to individuals with cleft lip +/- palate. This narrative i

BACKGROUND: The cultural and language diversity across many European countries presents a range of challenges and opportunities for speech and language therapists and other practitioners working with children with developmental language disorders (DLD) and their families.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore practitioners' perceptions of cultural and linguistic differences in response to children with DLD across different countries.
METHODS: A survey was developed by practitioners and researchers working with children with DLD across Europe and beyond as part of the work of Cost A

The educators of the deaf, the audiologists, and other similar professional groups appear to have reasonably clearly delineated roles to play in the management of the hearing-impaired child. Not so with the speech-language pathologist. This paper specifies such a role and offers a model for the delivery of speech-language pathology services to the hearing-impaired infant.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound biofeedback therapy (UBT) is a relatively new type of technology-assisted speech-language therapy and has shown promise in remediating speech sound disorders. However, there is a current lack of understanding of the barriers and benefits that may influence the usage behavior and clinical decision making for the implementation of UBT from a clinician perspective. In this qualitative study, we explore the perspectives of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who have used ultrasound biofeedback in programs of speech sound therapy using the unified theory of acceptance and use o

PURPOSE: The Multilevel word Accuracy Composite Scale (MACS) is a novel whole-word measure of speech production accuracy designed to evaluate behaviors commonly targeted in motor-based intervention for childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). The MACS yields a composite score generated through ratings of segmental accuracy, word structure maintenance, prosody, and movement transition. This study examined the validity of the MACS through comparison to established measures of speech accuracy. Reliability was also examined within and between practicing speech-language pathologists (SLPs).

PURPOSE: Effective early intervention is recommended to ameliorate the potential long term negative effects of stuttering. Efficacious treatments are available, but speech-language pathologists (SLPs) report finding implementation to be challenging due to a range of clinician, client and clinical context factors. Previous survey-based research has found that SLPs lack self-efficacy working with CWS, however the reasons contributing to this are not well understood. This study presents the first in-depth analysis of the current practices and perceptions of SLPs working with children who stutter

Purpose Family members of people with Parkinson's disease (PD) may experience third-party disability, manifesting as difficulty managing communication breakdowns and changed relationships influenced by communication disorders. This study examined family involvement in therapy to address third-party disability from the perspective of family members of people with PD and speech-language pathologists (SLPs). Method A mixed-methods design was used with two phases of data collection. In Phase 1 qualitative interviews, nine family members shared their perspectives about their involvement in therapy.

Purpose Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) anecdotally report concern that their interactions with a child who stutters, including even the use of the term "stuttering," might contribute to negative affective, behavioral, and cognitive consequences. This study investigated SLPs' comfort in providing a diagnosis of "stuttering" to children's parents/caregivers, as compared to other commonly diagnosed developmental communication disorders. Method One hundred forty-one school-based SLPs participated in this study. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two vignettes detailing an evaluatio

Purpose The purpose of this article is to describe a treatment approach, Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC), and to provide clinicians and clinical researchers a clear understanding of the theory and principles that contributed to the design of the treatment as well as the clinical decisions that must be made when implementing it. While brief descriptions of DTTC have been provided in textbooks, a complete summary of the rationale, essential elements, method, and procedures has not yet been published. Such a summary is important so that clinicians can gain a better understanding of and

Based on interviews with practising speech and language therapists, Hersh (2010) identifies three key areas that constitute challenging aspects of ending therapy, fundamentally to do with client and clinician expectations of what therapy has to offer, managing therapy relationships that need to be robust yet temporary, and balancing client empowerment with the need to achieve fair distribution of resources. In this commentary I take a closer look at the first two of these aspects by dissecting an incident from my own therapy experience. I highlight particularly the importance of the way therap

The affective components that arise as speech-language pathologists (SLPs) interact with the clients they serve and how these factors impact the process of ending therapy and SLPs' job satisfaction were discussed within the lead article to this scientific forum (Hersh, 2010 ). The development of a decision-making paradigm for dismissal is an expected outcome of training programs for SLP students, but this area may need more emphasis in the curriculum. Graduate students in the United States often complete practicum experiences in 10-12 weeks. Their assignments may require continuing an interven

A meta-analysis of research findings is reported on the effectiveness of treatments for persons suffering aphasia. Twenty-one studies provided sufficient information for inclusion in the analysis. The magnitudes of three classes of effect sizes were estimated: untreated recovery, treated recovery, and treated versus untreated recoveries. The outcomes witness the clear superiority in performance of persons receiving treatment by a speech-language pathologist.

A total of 1528 pre-school children (mean age 4 years and 9 months), being identified as speech or language delayed, were evaluated with respect to micro-otoscopy, nose and throat pathology, hearing function, and speech-language abilities. Subjects were classified into groups of (I) constant normal hearing, (II) fluctuating conductive hearing loss and (III) bilateral moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss requiring hearing aids. In groups II and III, severe speech and language pathologies were found more frequently than in group I. Additionally, auditory perception skills were less in
