In 1994, a retrospective study of new cases of traumatic Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) was conducted in all the hospitals in Southeast Turkey: 75 new traumatic SCI were identified. The estimated annual incidence was 16.9 per million population. The male/female ratio was 5.8/1. The mean age was 31.3, being 31.25 for male patients and 31.36 for female patients. 70.7% of all patients were under the age of 40. The major causes of SCI were falls (37.3%) and gunshot wounds (29.3%), followed by car accidents (25.3%), and stab wounds (1.3%). Thirty one patients (41.3%) were tetraplegic and 44 (58.7%) parap

The purpose of this study was to determine the usual circumstances surrounding spinal cord injuries that occur in swimming pools so that appropriate primary prevention programs targeted at high risk persons, activities, and environments could be developed and initiated. A sample of 341 persons enrolled in the National Spinal Cord Injury Statistical Center database since 1973 whose injury was the result of a swimming pool mishap was identified. Medical records were reviewed retrospectively and a survey questionnaire was administered by telephone to 196 persons (57.5%) who were located and agree

Contusion injuries of the rat thoracic spinal cord were made using a standardized device developed for the Multicenter Animal Spinal Cord Injury Study (MASCIS). Lesions of different severity were studied for signs of endogenous repair at times up to 6 weeks following injury. Contusion injuries produced a typical picture of secondary damage resulting in the destruction of the cord center and the chronic sparing of a peripheral rim of fibers which varied in amount depending upon the injury magnitude. It was noted that the cavities often developed a dense cellular matrix that became partially fil

In the past, urologic complications contributed greatly to spinal cord injury mortality. With improved evaluation and treatment, this is no longer the case. Treatment should be guided by urodynamic data gathered after the resolution of spinal shock symptoms. Goals of treatment are to facilitate voiding, reduce incontinence, and prevent renal damage. Indwelling catheters are almost never indicated for long-term treatment of the neurogenic bladder. Commonly used treatments include intermittent catheterization, condom catheter drainage with sphincter ablation, and pharmaceutical manipulation. Ele

Little is known about the significance of pyuria in patients with spinal cord injuries. The progress in hospital of 55 such patients was studied. They were divided into 2 groups according to the method of bladder drainage on admission. Group A comprised 43 patients with indwelling catheters. Group B comprised 12 patients who were able to void with tapping, with/without compression and on intermittent catheterisation. The results showed that group A had a mean pyuria level of 185 WBC/HPF on admission. The incidence of urinary tract infection was 4 per patient during hospitalisation and the mean

Orthostatic examinations were performed with a tilt table on 64 male volunteers, of whom 21 had sustained amputation of one or both lower limbs and 23 were paraplegic due to spinal cord injuries (SCI), with 20 healthy subjects as controls. Following tilting, signs and symptoms of fainting appeared in five of the SCI subjects, four of whom had spinal injuries above the level of D5. These phenomena appeared in only two of the controls and in none of the amputees. The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures of the amputees at rest and standing were higher than those recorded in the other two

Context/Objective: The Dutch Spinal Cord Injury Database (DSCID) collects nationwide data on patients with newly acquired spinal cord injury (SCI) undergoing inpatient rehabilitation in the Netherlands. Pediatric SCI is rare and underrepresented in research. This study aimed to describe the pediatric SCI population, examine differences between age groups (0-8 vs. 9-17 years) and etiology (traumatic (T-SCI) vs. non-traumatic (NT-SCI)), and evaluate the applicability of the DSCID for this population. Design Retrospective observational study using data from DSCID. Setting Dutch inpatient rehabili

BACKGROUND: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating neurological and pathological condition. Exosomal tsRNAs have reported to be promising biomarkers for cancer diagnosis and therapy. This study aimed to investigate the roles of SCI-associated exosomes, and related tsRNA mechanisms in SCI.
METHODS: The serum of healthy controls and SCI patients at the acute stage were collected for exosomes isolation, and the two different exosomes were used to treat human astrocytes (HA). The cell viability, apoptosis, and cycle were determined, and the expression of the related proteins were detected by w

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify important mental health topics for people with spinal cord injuries (PwSCI) and garner insights from health care clinicians working with this population. In doing so, we identified psychosocial adaptations in the context of sexuality, intimacy, and reproductive health.
METHOD: A qualitative, phenomenological approach was used, with 60-90-min virtual focus groups involving PwSCI, rehabilitation clinicians, and psychologists. Themes were identified through deductive and inductive transcript analysis. Eligibility for PwSCI included: (a) SCI for ≥ 1 year,

Emanating from several decades of study into the effects of the aging process after spinal cord injury (SCI), "accelerated aging" has become a common expression as the SCI accelerates the onset of age-related pathologies. However, the aging process follows a distinct trajectory, characterized by unique patterns of decline that differ from those observed in the general population without SCI. Aging brings significant changes to muscles, bones, and hormones, impacting overall physical function. Muscle mass and strength begin to decrease with a reduction in muscle fibers and impaired repair mecha
