Interviews were conducted to collect quantitative data on three forms of IPV, namely physical violence, psychological violence and sexual violence, as well as on a number of potentially associated factors. RESULTS: Twenty-two percent of women experienced sex

Prevalence of male intimate partner abuse in Vietnam.

The present study investigated the prevalence of both current and lifetime physical partner abuse among Vietnamese males who reside in Vietnam. Participants (N = 315) were randomly selected to participate in the study. Participants completed the Vietnamese version of the Conflict Tactics Scale-2. A total of 47% (n = 148) of the sampled participants were identified as current physical abusers and 68% (n = 214) as past abusers. Four of the most common abusive tactics abusers exhibited toward their partner were (a) throwing something at their wife (80%), (b) pushing or shoving their partner (78%)

Opinions about potential causes and triggers of intimate partner violence against women: a population-based study among married men from Kermanshah city, Iran.

This cross-sectional study forms part of a community-based social diagnosis in an Iranian city where different community members were approached regarding their opinions about what can cause and trigger intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW). The study deals with the opinions of married men and looks for patterns of opinions and how those patterns relate to individual socio-demographic characteristics. It also discusses opinions expressed concerning the consequences of IPVAW. A workplace-based convenient sample of men from Kermanshah city filled in a standardised, self-administered qu

The Intimate Justice Scale: an instrument to screen for psychological abuse and physical violence in clinical practice.

This article describes development of the Intimate Justice Scale (IJS) and reports on a clinical study of the validity, reliability, and clinical usefulness of the instrument. Rather than measuring specific acts of abuse, the IJS measures ethical dynamics of couple relationships, which are evident in patterns of action and attitude expressed over the course of the relationship. Ethical dynamics appear to correlate with partner abuse. The study suggests that the IJS may reliably identify victims of abuse and may discriminate between minor and severe levels of abuse. The IJS can be completed and

Mothers' physical abusiveness in a context of violence: effects on the mother-child relationship.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mothers' physical abusiveness on the quality of the mother-child relationship, and note how it further varied by their exposure to interparental violence (IPV). The sample consisted of 232 clinic-referred children, aged 2 to 7 years, and their biological mothers. Slightly more than a quarter of the children (N = 63, 27.2%) had been physically abused by their mothers; approximately half of these children also had a history of exposure to IPV (N = 34, 54%). Investigating effects of physical abuse in the context of IPV history on mothers

[Having been exposed to violence increases the risk of health problems later in life].

Violence is a common problem in society worldwide, and recent research has shown links to various signs of ill-health among victims. In a Swedish population based study, 46 per cent of women and 38 per cent of men had, at some point, been subjected to severe sexual, physical or emotional violence. The respondents were also asked about their present health. The study showed a significant over-representation of respondents subjected to serious violence in all ill-health indicators (PTSD, depression, psychosomatic symptoms, self-harm behaviour, risky alcohol intake, low self-rated physical health

Gender and victimization by intimates.

Recent data demonstrate that, although gender has an impact upon the experience of being a victim of an intimate's violence, there is no particular personality pattern that leads one to become a victim. Rather, women--who are socialized to adapt and submit, and who are likely to become victims of men's sexual violence or physical abuse--may not develop adequate self-protection skills as children, especially if they come from childhood homes in which females are victimized, leading to a later vulnerability to physical and sexual abuse. Men, however, socialized to express anger and aggression in

Characteristics and psychosocial problems of patients with bipolar disorder at high risk for suicide attempt.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder with a history of substance abuse or suicide attempt is a strong predictor of suicide. A high comorbidity of substance use disorders may obscure the specificity of findings about suicide behaviors in Western patients with bipolar disorder. METHODS: The clinical data of Chinese bipolar patients (DSM-III-R) in Taiwan who had been naturalistically followed up for at least 15 years were obtained by a combination of chart reviews and interviews with patients and family members. The national identity numbers were used to search for deceased subjects. RESULTS: There wer

"Cruel Fathers," Assortative Matching and Spousal Violence: Does Witnessing Spousal Violence as a Child Increase the Chances of Adult Victimhood?

The association between witnessing spousal violence (SV) as a child and the increased adult victimization is well-established, and explained in terms of neural adaptation. But establishing causation requires addressing issues of underreporting of both witnessing and facing violence, and endogeneity due to confounding variables. Moreover, the role of social pathways like nonrandom selection of partners also needs to be analyzed. Using India's Demographic Health Survey data (2019-2021), an endogenous treatment effects model is estimated allowing for different levels of predicted underreporting.

Risk Factors for Multiple Violations of Protective Orders in Intimate Partner Violence Against Women.

This study examined 1,134 cases of violence against women in intimate partner relationships with violations of protective orders in a monitoring period of up to 15 months. The dynamics of time and violence were analyzed in the cases of multiple violation versus one-time violation, with the objective of identifying and thus neutralizing the risk factors for this type of recidivism. The results showed that early violation, serious physical violence, death threats, as well as jealousy, harassment, and control are related to multiple violation. This article discusses the results in comparison with

Spousal Violence Against Women in India: A Social-Ecological Analysis Using Data From the National Family Health Survey 2015 to 2016.

Even after enactment of the Protection of Women From Domestic Violence Act 2005, over the last 10 years, the rate of decline of prevalence of spousal violence against women has remained low in India. This study attempts to explain the experience of spousal violence using a social-ecological framework. We analyzed the National Family Health Survey 2015 to 2016 (NFHS-4) data of 66,013 ever-married women aged 15 to 49 years. Participants in the domestic violence module of the NFHS-4 reported their experience of violence committed by their husband within the 12 months preceding the survey. Multile

Internalizing and externalizing symptoms in young children exposed to intimate partner violence: examining intervening processes.

Children's emotion dysregulation, children's appraisals, maternal psychological functioning, and harsh discipline were investigated as potential mediators in the putative link between exposure to intimate partner violence and poor child outcomes. Participants included 132 children ages 6-8 and their mothers who had been enrolled in a longitudinal study of parenting and children's social development. The mothers were receiving some form of government-based economic assistance or other social services, and were currently involved in a romantic relationship. Results of structural equation modelin

Intimate partner violence and children's memory.

The current study was designed to examine the relation between intimate partner violence (IPV) and children's memory and drew from a socioeconomically and racially diverse sample of children living in and around a midsized southeastern city (n = 140). Mother-reported IPV when the children were 30 months old was a significant predictor of children's short-term, working, and deliberate memory at 60 months of age, even after controlling for the children's sex and race, the families' income-to-needs ratio, the children's expressive vocabulary, and maternal harsh-intrusive parenting behaviors.
