Ankle sprains are a common sports injury that can cause significant, chronic disability. Studies aimed at prevention through the use of footwear have focused on the biomechanical aspects of foot and ankle anatomy, proprioceptive input of the foot/ankle complex, external stresses applied to the joint, and shoe traction. These studies support the use of high top shoes for ankle sprain prevention because of their ability to limit extreme ranges of motion, provide additional proprioceptive input and decrease external joint stress. Despite this biomechanical evidence, clinical trials are inconclusi

Sprains and fractures are common injuries in the athlete because of the force of impact on the ankle during activity. Appropriate management of ankle injuries promotes healing and prompt return to sports activities.

Many pediatricians desire to work with young athletes. However, most pediatricians have not been trained to treat common musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. The tendency is to refer the athlete to a specialist with expertise in the management of musculoskeletal trauma. However, pediatricians should be more involved in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to their patients who are athletes. The most common musculoskeletal injury in athletes is the ankle sprain. This article is a review of the basic principles of diagnosis and management of ankle sprains.

Many choices are available to athletes seeking an ankle support. The time-honored tradition of ankle taping with adhesive tape does offer protection against ankle sprains during activity. Laced stabilizers offer an equal or possibly greater amount of support, are less costly and easier to apply, and can be retightened frequently during activity. The physician should become familiar with one of these two methods and choose one based on availability and feasibility in the community. The air stirrup may be indicated for patients with a history of ankle injury who are undergoing a graduated rehabi

The management of ligamentous injuries to the ankle is controversial. Neither the methods for classification and diagnosis, or the procedures for treatment are clear cut. Ankle sprains are a common occurrence, with the majority involving the lateral ligament complex. Within this complex, the anterior talofibular ligament is injured most frequently, usually while the foot is in the plantar flexed position. Ankle injuries can be diagnosed through physical exam, including the anterior drawer test and/or a stress exam, or through roentgenographic evaluation. The purpose of the stress roentgenogram

The authors have seen 5 children aged between 12 and 16 years suffering from a painful foot described as a recurrent sprain. Movements of the subtalar joint were limited and radiographs showed a hypertrophic calcaneal spur projecting towards the navicular but without fusion between the calcaneus and navicular. The calcaneal spurs were resected with good results and with an immediate symptomatic improvement.
