Oral hygiene and gingival health in Danish dental students and faculty.

This survey attempted to determine the status of oral cleanliness and gingival health in 150 dental students and 101 faculty members in a dental school. Without advance notice, plaque deposits were scored, using the Plaque Index System, and gingival health was determined using the criteria of the Gingival Index System. The 1st-year students had the poorest hygiene and gingival health. An improvement (P less than 0.01) was noted in the 2nd-year students who were still not in clinical training but had completed a course in preventive dentistry including oral hygiene techniques. Further improveme

The Oral Microbiome in Periodontal Health.

The estimation of oral microbiome (OM) taxonomic composition in periodontally healthy individuals can often be biased because the clinically periodontally healthy subjects for evaluation can already experience dysbiosis. Usually, they are included just based on the absence of clinical signs of periodontitis. Additionally, the age of subjects is used to be higher to correspond well with tested groups of patients with chronic periodontitis, a disorder typically associated with aging. However, the dysbiosis of the OM precedes the clinical signs of the disease by many months or even years. The abs

Amalgam, which is an alloy of inorganic mercury, is used as a restorative material in dentistry. Organic mercury gets ingested in the body mainly by the consumption of seafood. Mercury is also stated to cause various adverse health effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, dermatitis, muscle weakness, and neurological disorders. In recent years, the use of amalgam has become a controversy stating the various adverse effects of mercury. Hence, the study was c

A statistical method to evaluate dental classification systems used by military dental services.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this research project was to develop a systematic approach to evaluate the effectiveness of dental classifications used by military dental services to predict dental emergencies. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study of U.S. Navy recruits were followed for an average of 3.5 years. Dental records of 1,114 recruits who had their initial dental examination during the calendar year 1997 were collected in 2001. Four hundred sixty-two dental emergencies (DE) were recorded, of which 50 were class 3 patients. The incidence density ratio (IDR) of DE was 2.2 (p < 0.001; class 3 co

A new Norwegian index of orthodontic treatment need related to orthodontic concern among 11-year-olds and their parents.

A new index of orthodontic treatment need was introduced in Norway in 1990. On a morphologic and functional basis the four groups very great (A), great (B), obvious (C) and little/no (D) need were defined for social insurance refunding. The purpose of the present study was to investigate to what extent the new index corresponded with orthodontic concern among potential orthodontic patients and their parents. Of 104 randomly selected fourth grade children, 99 (48 girls, 51 boys, mean age 10.7 yr) presented themselves for clinical examination and interview. One parent was asked to accompany the

Minimum ramus breadth and coronoid height in gender determination - An orthopantomographic study.

BACKGROUND: Gender determination is an important part of forensic dentistry and legal investigations. Mandible is the largest, sexually dimorphic, and strongest bone of the facial skeleton. Morphometric measurements of the mandible by using orthopantomogram are widely used in gender determination. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of minimum ramus breath and coronoid height of the mandible for gender determination using orthopantomogram. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty orthopantomograms of 30 males and 30 females between the age group of 30 to 40 years were collected. The

Benefits of externships with pediatric dentistry programs for potential residents: program directors' and current residents' perceptions.

This study's goal was to understand the extent, framework, and benefits of externships with prospective residency programs undertaken by predoctoral dental students or dentists interested in applying for a residency program. In 2012, a questionnaire was sent to all pediatric dentistry residents and program directors in the United States (63 percent and 74 percent return rate, respectively). Externships were offered by fifty-seven of the seventy-six programs. Most program directors (95 percent) agreed that externships are beneficial and compensate at least partially for the lack of numerical Na

Racial Disparities in Access to Preventive Dental Services in Pediatric Population: A Secondary Data Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Though preventive measures are available to alleviate the burden of dental caries, there remain racial disparities in the utilization of preventative dental care. Our objectives were to determine whether racial disparities persisted in receiving preventive oral procedures between (1) Black children and white children; and (2) Hispanic children and white children. METHODS: We used pooled Medical Expenditure Panel Survey data in the United States from 2018 to 2021. The key outcome variable involved the use of preventive dental services (ie, examination, x-rays, cleani

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of handheld ultrasound for scanning and measuring masseter muscle thickness. METHODS: This prospective pilot study included adult participants aged 18 and older. Inclusion criteria specified healthy individuals without pain or a TMD diagnosis in the last six months and not receiving neuromodulators as a treatment for TMJ-related issues. Exclusion criteria included individuals with developmental disorders affecting the craniofacial skeleton or with connective tissue and dermatological disorders impacting skin thickness. Maryland dentists' attitudes regarding tobacco issues.

Due to increased national interest in tobacco intervention roles for oral health professionals, a survey of Maryland dentists' attitudes toward tobacco issues was conducted. A convenience sample of 700 members of the Maryland State Dental Association was drawn from the total membership list (N = 2200). A 30% response rate was obtained. Subjects were mailed a twelve-item questionnaire that elicited primarily attitudinal information. Results revealed that 54.3% of the subjects never smoked, 39% formerly smoked and 6.1% currently smoke. Smoking behavior was associated with numerous attitudinal va

BACKGROUND: Preoperative information before orthognathic surgery is usually provided through verbal and written explanations; however, the effectiveness of supplementary visual tools, such as video animations and skull models, remains understudied. This study aimed to evaluate whether video animations and skull models effectively reduce preoperative anxiety in patients undergoing bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. METHODS: A single-blinded randomized controlled trial was conducted at Ankara University Faculty of Dentistry between January 2024 and January 2025. Patients aged 18-36 years, classi
