Neonatal group B streptococcal infections in Indian (Asian) babies in South Africa.

In this, the first report of group B streptococcal (GBS) infections in Asian neonates in South Africa, the incidence was 2.65/1000 live births over a period of 3.5 years. Early onset disease (EOD), defined as arising less than or equal to 5 days after birth, was present in 79% cases; in most of these, the onset was before the age of 24 h. One baby presented with two episodes of late onset GBS infection. The incidence of culture-proven neonatal septicaemia during the same period was 12.3/1000 live births, GBS being commonest organism isolated. It was also the most frequent cause of bacterial me

The immune cellular response tested by lymphocyte transformation in the streptococcal infections.

Thirty-five children between 6 and 17 years treated in the clinic for scarlet fever, rheumatic fever and other non-streptococcal infections as controls, were tested by lymphocyte transformation to four streptococcal antigens. In all cases of scarlet fever and especially of rheumatic fever the lymphocytes were better stimulated by streptococcal products than in the control group. The SO and the MAP fraction showed a good stimulating activity. The response in the rheumatic fever patients was not influenced by the steroid treatment, nor by the stage of the illness. A parallelism with high humoral…

Invasive group A streptococcal infections: lessons learned from the 2022-23 upsurge.

During the late phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, several high-income countries reported a surge in invasive group A streptococcal (iGAS) infections, with notable paediatric morbidity and mortality. This Review explores three potential drivers of this increase: the role of the COVID-19 pandemic and associated non-pharmaceutical interventions on group A streptococcus (GAS) circulation; the potential burden associated with other respiratory viruses such as influenza and respiratory syncytial virus; and the potential role of hypervirulent GAS clones and lineages. The resurgence of iGAS disease high

Characteristics of Intracranial Group A Streptococcal Infections in US Children, 1997-2014.

BACKGROUND: Few data on intracranial group A Streptococcus (GAS) infection in children are available. Here, we describe the demographic, clinical, and diagnostic characteristics of 91 children with intracranial GAS infection. METHODS: Cases of intracranial GAS infection in persons ≤18 years of age reported between 1997 and 2014 were identified by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's population- and laboratory-based Active Bacterial Core surveillance (ABCs) system. Medical charts were abstracted using a active, standardized case report form. All available isolates were emm typed. U

A Cluster of Paediatric Invasive Group A Streptococcal and Chicken Pox Infections.

An increase in invasive group A streptococcus (GAS) cases referred to the paediatric infectious disease (PID) department of the Children's University Hospital (CUH), Temple Street, prompted review of all invasive GAS cases in 2016. All of the 10 cases identified occurred over a 16-week period from February to June, of which 6 (60%) required admission to the paediatric intensive care unit. The median length of stay was 21.5 days. Seven had active chickenpox infection at diagnosis. This study highlights the significant morbidity of invasive GAS in children in Ireland. Most cases were associated

Clinical Characteristics of and Preventative Strategies for Peripartum Group A Streptococcal Infections.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical characteristics in parturients with group A streptococcal infection and suggest preventive strategies. METH … CLUSION: The high morbidity and the scarcity of distinct risk factors related to parturient group A streptococcal infections in the face of often community-acquired group A streptococci call for reassessing preventive strategies. These may include improved microbiological screening during pregnancy in high-prevalence areas or clinical and microbiological risk stratificati …

Serotypes and clinical manifestations of group B streptococcal infections in western Sweden.

OBJECTIVES: To study the serotype distributions of group B streptococci (GBS) isolated from blood and cerebrospinal fluid and from the genital tract of pregnant women and to investigate any possible relation between serotype, age and clinical manifestation. METHODS: Invasive strains were collected from 1988 to 1997 and genital strains from 1995 to 1996. Strains of GBS were serotyped with coagglutination. Clinical data were obtained from hospital notes. RESULTS: A total of 144 invasive strains, 78 from neonates and infants and 66 from adults, were serotyped. The most common isolates from neon

Invasive group A streptococcal infections in children with varicella in Southern California.

OBJECTIVE: To describe demographic and clinical features of invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) infections in children with varicella in Southern California in early 1994. METHODS: From hospitals of Los Angeles and Orange Counties, children with invasive GAS infections after varicella between January 1 and April 8, 1994, were identified by hospital infection control nurses. Medical records of patients were reviewed, and any available GAS isolate was further tested. RESULTS: Twenty-four cases were identified; 54% were male, 50% were Hispanic and the median age was 3 years (range, 0.5 to 8).

Prevention of neonatal group B streptococcal infections: advances in maternal vaccine development.

OBJECTIVE: We describe the current state of prevention of neonatal group B streptococcal infections and present recent advances toward the development of a maternal vaccine for prevention of this disease. DATA SOURCES: We used a MEDLINE search of the Index Medicus from 1976-1992 for articles regarding group B streptococcus classification and immunology. Group B streptococcus was also cross-referenced with bacterial antigens, antibodies, and vaccines. Relevant textbooks were reviewed. METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: Fifty-seven articles were selected as providing important background and new find…

Chronic carrier state in mothers of infants with group B streptococcal infections.

Seven of eight women who had given birth to infants with early onset or intrauterine infection caused by group B streptococci remained carriers of the same serotype of group B streptococci up to 38 months after their pregnancy. In contrast, only 34 of 88 group B streptococci carriers who had given birth to healthy infants harbored the same serotype at the 34 months' follow-up (P = .009). Among the control subjects, 29 of 71 showed increased serum levels at followup of antibodies against the serotype isolated at delivery, a significantly higher proportion compared with the mothers of infected i

[Current status and prospects in the diagnosis and epidemiology of streptococcal infections].

In the first part of the paper the author stresses the importance, and the necessity of laboratory investigation of streptococcal infections, in view of the establishment of the clinical and of the etiologic diagnosis, for assessing the efficiency of the treatment applied, for monitoring the recovery of patients, as well as of chronic patients, and for the prevention, and detection of late complications. The complex methodology of laboratory methods of diagnosis in streptococcal infections is presented, stressing the use, and the efficiency of micromethods and of rapid techniques for diagnosis…

Experimental group B streptococcal infections in mice: hematogenous virulence and mucosal colonization.

A group B streptococcus recovered from a blood specimen from a neonate with sepsis was used to evaluate the use of mice for studies characterizing the hematogenous virulence and the asymptomatic mucosal colonization of the vagina or of the respiratory tract by these bacteria. When injected intravenously, the 50% lethal dose for mice was 10(6); however, as few as 10(2) organisms produced septic deaths. In mice undergoing water diuresis, bacteriuria and pyelonephritis were not produced after direct bladder inoculation of the streptococci. Asymptomatic vaginal colonizations that persisted for 12

Group B streptococcal infection in Taiwan: maternal colonization and neonatal infection.

BACKGROUND: There is no national data on group B streptococcus (GBS) infection in Taiwan. We investigated incidence of maternal GBS colonization and neonatal GBS infection rate and clinical pictures of neonatal GBS infection to estimate the value of intrapartum chemoprophylactic strategy in Taiwan. METHODS: From January 2004 to June 2005, a prospective study to estimate maternal colonization rate by maternal rectovaginal culture at six hospitals was conducted. Neonatal GBS infection rate based on inborn infants was calculated retrospectively from January 2001 to June 2005; clinical pictures o
