Young Patients with Anorexia Nervosa: The Contribution of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Events.

Background and Objectives: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a complex disorder whose etiopathogenesis involves both biological and environmental factors. The aims of the present study were to retrospectively analyze risk factors in young patients with AN and to assess differences in clinical and eating-related symptoms between patients with and without a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and with or without a history of acknowledged risk factors. Materials and Methods: Sixty-four patients with AN (<25 years old) were recruited and completed an anamnestic evaluation and the following s

Multiple traumatic experiences, post-traumatic stress disorder and offending behaviour in female prisoners.

BACKGROUND: Although it is well established that prisoners commonly have histories of childhood trauma, little is known about mediators between exposure to trauma and criminal behaviour. HYPOTHESES: We hypothesised that the experience of trauma in adulthood, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and emotional dysregulation would mediate the relationship between childhood traumatic events and later criminal behaviour. METHODS: Eighty-nine female prisoners were interviewed using standardised scales, in a cross-sectional study design. History of traumatic events, DSM-5 PTSD and emotional regula

White Matter Abnormalities in Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Following a Specific Traumatic Event.

Studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are complicated by wide variability in the intensity and duration of prior stressors in patient participants, secondary effects of chronic psychiatric illness, and a variable history of treatment with psychiatric medications. In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies, patient samples have often been small, and they were not often compared to similarly stressed patients without PTSD in order to control for general stress effects. Findings from these studies have been inconsistent. The present study investigated whole-brain microstructural altera

Coping style and post-traumatic stress disorder following severe traumatic brain injury.

There is increasing evidence that a proportion of severe traumatically brain injured (TBI) patients do suffer post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). The aim of this study was to investigate the predictors of PTSD following severe TBI in a sample of 96 patients who sustained a severe TBI, of whom 27% satisfied diagnostic criteria for PTSD. The Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Interview, the Coping Style Questionnaire, and the Functional Assessment Measure was administered to these patients 6 months after hospital discharge. Avoidant coping style, behavioural coping style, and a history of prior u

Transdiagnostic neural correlates of post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury.

Post-traumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury are highly comorbid and share overlapping cognitive and affective symptoms linked to frontolimbic circuitry. However, it remains unclear whether symptom severity reflects shared neural mechanisms across diagnoses or whether mild traumatic brain injury modifies these relationships. We used functional MRI to examine transdiagnostic associations between brain activity, functional connectivity and symptom burden in 109 combat veterans. Because symptom measures were highly intercorrelated, analyses were interpreted within a symptom-dime

Frequency and impact of post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic life events in patients with migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been proposed as a risk factor for chronification of migraine. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of PTSD and traumatic life events (TE) in patients with episodic (EM) and chronic migraine (CM) and their impact on clinical parameters, other comorbidities, and migraine biomarkers. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with EM and CM according to the International Classification of Headache Disorders (third edition; beta version) were recruited at a headache unit and a primary care centre. We used questionnaires validated for

A comparison of the functional connectome in mild traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) often co-occur in the context of threat to one's life. These conditions also have an overlapping symptomatology and include symptoms of anxiety, poor concentration and memory problems. A major challenge has been articulating the underlying neurobiology of these overlapping conditions. The primary aim of this study was to compare intrinsic functional connectivity between mTBI (without PTSD) and PTSD (without mTBI). The study included functional MRI data from 176 participants: 42 participants with mTBI, 67 with PTSD and

Amyloid pathology fingerprint differentiates post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are risk factors for early onset of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may accelerate the progression rate of AD pathology. As amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques are a hallmark of AD pathology, we hypothesized that TBI and PTSD might increase Aβ accumulation in the brain. METHODS: We examined PET and neuropsychological data from Vietnam War veterans compiled by the US Department of Defense Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative, to examine the spatial distribution of Aβ in male veterans' who had experienced a TBI and/o

The Evolution of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder following Moderate-to-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.

Increasing evidence indicates that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may develop following traumatic brain injury (TBI), despite most patients having no conscious memory of their accident. This prospective study examined the frequency, timing of onset, symptom profile, and trajectory of PTSD and its psychiatric comorbidities during the first 4 years following moderate-to-severe TBI. Participants were 85 individuals (78.8% male) with moderate or severe TBI recruited following admission to acute rehabilitation between 2005 and 2010. Using the Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and

Traumatic events and post-traumatic stress disorder in the community: prevalence, risk factors and comorbidity.

OBJECTIVE: Lifetime and 12-month prevalence of traumatic events and DSM-IV post-traumatic stress disorder as well as risk factors and comorbidity patterns were investigated in a representative community sample (n = 3021, aged 14-24 years). METHOD: Traumatic events and PTSD were assessed with the Munich Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). RESULTS: Although 26% of male subjects and 17.7% of female subjects reported at least one traumatic event, only a few qualified for a full PTSD diagnosis (1% of males and 2.2% of females). Traumatic events and PTSD were strongly associated w

Traumatic events and post-traumatic stress disorder in cocaine users entering private treatment.

We investigated traumatic events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and psychiatric comorbidity in 450 men and women entering private, hospital-based treatments for cocaine dependence. Overall prevalence of event exposure was the same for women and men; however, women were approximately five times more likely than men to be diagnosed with lifetime and current PTSD. Women experienced more PTSD than men even when exposed to the same type of event. In most subjects with PTSD, onset of the disorder preceded onset of cocaine dependence. Subjects with PTSD were more likely than those without PT

Predicting Post-Disaster Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptom Trajectories: The Role of Pre-Disaster Traumatic Experiences.

The mental health impact of disasters is substantial, with 30-40% of direct disaster victims developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It is not yet clear why some people cope well with disaster-related trauma while others experience chronic dysfunction. Prior research on non-disaster trauma suggests that an individual's history of traumatic experiences earlier in the life course, prior to the disaster, may be a key factor in explaining variability in psychological responses to disasters. This study evaluated the extent to which pre-disaster trauma predicts PTSD trajectories in a sampl

Finding a home for post-traumatic stress disorder in biological psychiatry. Is it a disorder of anxiety, mood, stress, or memory?

The collection of articles in this issue constitutes the most thorough review of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) yet. At this point, the accumulated phenomenological, epidemiological, biological, and treatment evidence make it crystal clear that PTSD stands alone as a unique psychiatric disorder. It is not the same as depression, although many PTSD patients are also depressed, and it is not the same as the other anxiety disorders, although PTSD patients frequently also suffer with panic attacks, social avoidance, and obsessive ruminations.

Adverse Childhood Experiences and the Diagnosis of ICD-11 Post-traumatic Stress Disorder or Complex Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A Systematic Review and Three-level Meta-analysis.

The 11th revision of the World Health Organization's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) proposed two sibling diagnoses, namely post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex PTSD (CPTSD). We aimed to synthesize studies that evaluated the association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and PTSD or CPTSD. Systematic search of 7 databases identified 24 studies (282 effect sizes; 17,075 participants). Separate three-level random effects meta-analyses were conducted to examine the associations between ACEs and the ratio of PTSD to no diagnosis, CPTSD to no diagnosis, and

Measuring post-traumatic stress disorder and complex post-traumatic stress disorder using the International Trauma Questionnaire: results from a Hungarian clinical and non-clinical sample.

Background: The 11th revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) simplified the description of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and also introduced a new trauma-related diagnosis called complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD). CPTSD is linked to earlier, prolonged interpersonal trauma, and is characterized by a broader range of symptoms, in addition to the core PTSD symptoms. The International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) has been developed to assess the new diagnostic criteria. Objectives: The primary aim of our study was to test the factor structure of the ITQ

Childhood adversities and post-traumatic stress: predictive pathways through acute stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Trauma, a psychological phenomenon, can contribute to several mental health disorders such as acute stress disorder (ASD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Understanding the impacts of childhood adversities on mental disorders is essential, since early trauma can profoundly shape an individual's reaction to subsequent trauma. AIMS: To study the association between childhood adversities and full-threshold and subthreshold PTSD onset, either directly or through the intermediary role of ASD. METHOD: Data were collected longitudinally from healthcare workers aged 18 years an
