Resistance to currently available anthelmintics is a serious phenomenon which is prevalent globally. Cyathostomins are one of the major parasites, and are of primary concern in donkeys. There have been reports of emerging resistance to pyrantel, but the status of pyrantel resistance in donkey populations in the UK is largely unknown. This report investigates pyrantel resistance in two geographically isolated donkey herds in the South West of England. The first herd had suspected pyrantel resistance, with already established resistance to other anthelmintics. In the second herd the efficacy of

Aelurostrongylus abstrusus lives in the respiratory bronchioles and alveolar canals in the lungs of the cat and causes parasitic pneumonia. In present study, the effect of different temperatures on the viability of first stage larvae in feces of cats naturally infected with A. Abstrusus was investigated. Feces of cats were divided into two portions. One portion was left at room temperature (21-24 degrees C) and the other, left at +4 degrees C for three month-period. The fecal samples were examined by Baermann and McMaster techniques at 15 day-intervals. The number of living first stage larvae

The authors describe a case of abdominal angiostrongyliasis in an adult patient presenting acute abdominal pain caused by jejunal perforation. The case was unusual, as this affliction habitually involves the terminal ileum, appendix, cecum or ascending colon. The disease is caused by the nematode Angiostrongylus costaricensis, whose definitive hosts are forest rodents while snails and slugs are its intermediate hosts. Infection in humans is accidental and occurs via the ingestion of snail or slug mucoid secretions found on vegetables, or by direct contact with the mucus. Abdominal angiostrongy

Equine strongylid parasites are ubiquitous around the world and are main targets of parasite control programmes. In recent years, automated fecal egg counting systems based on image analysis have become available allowing for collection and analysis of large-scale egg count data. This study aimed to evaluate equine strongylid fecal egg count (FEC) data generated with an automated system over three years in the US with specific attention to seasonal and regional trends in egg count magnitude and sampling activity. Five US regions were defined; North East, South East, North Central, South Centra

Parasitic dead-ends occur when a parasite is unable to establish a permanent interaction in an unnatural host. Although the likelihood of successful reproduction by the pathogenic agent is nul, parasitic dead-end heralds capture of new parasites and therefore expansion of the host range. Angiostrongyliasis due to A. cantonensis or A. costaricensis, anisakiasis, Ancylostoma caninum infection, gnathostomiasis and sparganosis are undoubtedly emerging zoonoses of particular medical interest. Prevention of these diseases relies on abstinence from eating raw meat from invertebrates or cold-blooded (

Strongyloidiasis develops from the infection with Strongyloides stercoralis (Family: Strongylidae) and was recently considered a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization due to its global distribution and high burden of infection. Here, we present the cases of two patients under corticosteroid therapy after neurosurgical surgery who developed septic shock-like hyperinfection syndrome due to disseminated strongyloidiasis. The first case is a 77-year-old man from Cape Verde who was diagnosed with an extra-axial right parietal brain mass. He was given dexamethasone and was subm

BACKGROUND: Various factors, such as climate, body size and sociality are often linked to parasitism. This constrains the identification of other determinants driving parasite infections. Here, we investigate for the first time intestinal parasites in two sympatric arboreal primate species, which share similar activity patterns, feeding ecology, body size and sociality, and cope with the same climate conditions, but differ in sleeping site ecology: the Milne-Edward's sportive lemur (Lepilemur edwardsi) and the Western woolly lemur (Avahi occidentalis). Comparison of these two species aimed to

BACKGROUND: Angiostrongylus cantonensis is the primary etiological agent of eosinophilic meningitis, transmitted through rats (definitive hosts) and molluscs (potential intermediate hosts). Human infection occurs accidentally through the ingestion of contaminated hosts. First reported in the French West Indies in 2002, cases of A. cantonensis infections are emerging due to the spread of its hosts, particularly the invasive African giant snail (Lissachatina fulica). This study aims to assess the prevalence of A. cantonensis in gastropods across Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guiana, providi

Biological infections of the zoonotic nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis have caused neuroangiostrongyliasis (NAS) in many people around the world and have impacted the neurological health of various wild and domestic animals. Several Caribbean countries have reported cases of NAS caused by the rat lungworm; however, the most recent study in Puerto Rico was in 1984. Here, we conducted quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to evaluate levels of A. cantonensis DNA in 205 gastropod samples from 20 different species across eight sites in Puerto Rico. An overall estimate of 35.6% (n = 73/2

BACKGROUND: The nematode Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which is endemic to Southeast Asia and adjacent Pacific Islands, has already been recorded in more than 30 countries, including Brazil and other South American nations. It is one of the principal etiological agents of the zoonosis Eosinophilic Meningitis (EoM), which has a number of different species of terrestrial gastropods that act as its intermediate hosts.
OBJECTIVE: The present study investigated the occurrence of the larvae of this nematode in specimens of terrestrial molluscs collected in half of the municipalities of the Brazilian

BACKGROUND: Circulating lymphocytes are essential for the immune response to helminth infections, as they secrete cytokines and thus coordinate subsequent immunological processes. In canine angiostrongylosis, a potentially fatal disease caused by the metastrongylid nematode Angiostrongylus vasorum, the underlying immune mechanisms driving disease progression remain poorly understood despite the severe clinical consequences. Canine peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from healthy dogs and stimulated with three different antigens of A vasorum, including adult excretory-secre

A 4-month-old male intact domestic shorthair kitten was referred due to acute onset of severe respiratory distress. Aelurostrongylus abstrusus infection was diagnosed by Baermann technique. The kitten showed a fluctuating respiratory status despite anthelmintic and supportive therapy; severe initial distress followed by partial improvement, deterioration by Day 33 and marked recovery by Day 63. Monitoring included clinical examinations, oxygen saturation, faecal analysis, thoracic radiography and lung point-of-care ultrasound on Days 1, 10, 33 and 63. Lung ultrasound and thoracic radiographs c

Specimens of Cloacina artemis, C. expansa, C. hera, C. hermes, C. hestia, C. magnipapillata, C. obtusa and C. selene, which occur in both of the closely related species of grey kangaroos, Macropus fuliginosus and M. giganteus, were found to differ genetically based on sequence data derived from the internal transcribed spacers (ITS-1, ITS-2) of ribosomal DNA. The extent of differences varied from a single base pair in C. expansa, to 32 in C. hestia. In the case of C. hera, C. hestia and C. magnipapillata, separate genotypes were found in M. fuliginosus and M. giganteus. With C. artemis, C. exp

Angiostrongylus cantonensis is a zoonotic parasite that causes severe symptoms in humans, including eosinophilic meningitis and eosinophilic meningoencephalitis. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from helminthes have been implicated in regulating host survival and immune response. However, the roles of A. cantonensis EVs in modulating parasite pathogenesis and host immune response remain poorly understood. Herein, we characterized EVs derived from A. cantonensis fifth-stage larvae (L5) and adult worms. Ultrastructural features showed that EVs from adult worms are smaller in size compared wi

An 11-month-old male infant with ascending paralysis had an unremarkable initial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and imaging. Progressive neurological symptoms resulted in repeated CSF sampling, microscopy, and plasma microbial cell-free DNA next-generation sequencing analysis, that in combination with epidemiology, confirmed the diagnosis.

Angiostrongylus cantonensis (AC) is well-documented that parasitizes the host brain and causes eosinophilic meningitis. The migration route of AC in permissive hosts is well demonstrated, while in nonpermissive hosts, it remains to be fully defined. In the present study, we exploited live imaging technology, morphological and pathological configuration analysis, and molecular biological technologies to explore the migration route of AC and the accompanying tissue damage in nonpermissive and permissive hosts. Our data indicated that, in nonpermissive host mouse, AC larvae migrated from intestin

In this study, rodents (Rattus rattus) and mollusks (Achatina fulica) were captured in a small forest located in a large metropolitan city in Brazil, and they were examined to investigate possible parasitism by Angiostrongylus cantonensis. The parasites were recovered as helminths from the pulmonary arteries of the synanthropic rodents and as third-stage larvae (with Metastrongylidae family characteristics) from the mollusks. To confirm the species, these larvae were used to experimentally infect Rattus norvegicus for the posterior recovery of adult helminths. To identify the adult helminths,

Crenosoma vulpis is a nematode lungworm found in wild and domestic canids in some parts of North America and Europe. Reported radiographic findings are nonspecific and consist of a combination of bronchial and interstitial changes of variable severity. This retrospective, case series study aimed to describe thoracic computed tomographic (CT) findings for a group of dogs with confirmed crenosomosis. Selection criteria were presentation with a chronic cough during the period of January 2016 to February 2017, evaluation by thoracic CT, and final diagnosis of C. vulpis infection based on bronchosc
