A novel theoretical model was developed to determine the removal efficiency of sulfur dioxide using fine water spray. The droplet pH, diameter, S(IV) concentration, sulfur dioxide concentration, and liquid-to-gas ratio are found to influence the absorption of sulfur dioxide by the fine water spray. The results demonstrate that the absorption of sulfur dioxide by the fine water spray increases as the droplet diameter falls. Anomalies appear to exist in our understanding of atmospheric sulfur compounds, specifically as evidenced in the time trends of the different chemical forms of these compounds. Trends determined at a number of locations by several different groups seem to indicate that, responding to emission reductions across North America, the concentration of SO2 in the atmosphere is declining more rapidly than that of aerosol SO4(2-). The sulfur-binding protein of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans ATCC 23270 was investigated. The protein composition of the bacterium's cell surface changed according to the culture substrate. Sulfur-grown cells showed greater adhesion to sulfur than iron-grown cells. The sulfur-grown cells synthesized a 40-kDa surface protein which was not synthesized by iron-grown cells. Sulfur dioxide (SO2) is one of the commonly encountered environmental contaminants. Experiments were carried out to test for neonatal behavioral alterations associated with maternal SO2 exposure. Pregnant CD-I mice were exposed to 0, 32, or 65 PPM SO2 in environmental chambers from gestation day 7 to 18 (plug = day 1). The SO2 air flow was set at 500 ml/min. The effect of high dietary sulfur (S) supplementation on blood thiamine (B1) concentration, biochemical indices of liver, muscle and kidney damage and selected plasma electrolytes was studied in six sheep. 140 patients suffering from generalized chronic psoriasis were treated with the help of the natural sulphur resources of St. Peter-Ording over a period of 4 to 6 weeks. In 135 of these cases (96.4%), the skin became well improved. In 4 patients (2.9%) the skin lesions remained unchanged, while in only one case (0.7%) the lesions worsened.

This study was done to produce a model of chronic bronchitis. Twelve beagle dogs were exposed to 500 ppm sulfur dioxide (SO2) for 2 h/d, 5 d/wk for 21 wk and 4 dogs were sham-exposed to filtered ambient air for the same period. Laboratory exposure experiments demonstrate that carbonyl sulfide in wet air corrodes copper at 22 degrees C at a rate that is approximately linear with total exposure (the product of exposure time and carbonyl sulfide concentration). The corrosion rate is similar to that of hydrogen sulfide, a widely recognized corrodant. The much greater average atmospheric abundance of carbonyl sulfide compared with that of hydrogen sulfide or sulfur dioxide suggests that carbonyl sulfide may be a major agent of atmospheric sulfur corrosion.

A structure resembling a sulfur granule found in histologic sections of endometrium from patients with intrauterine contraceptive devices is described. It is distinguished from a true sulfur granule on morphologic grounds and is further characterized as a foreign substance, most probably fragments of the synthetic contraceptive device. It is not associated with clinical disease. Microbiologic cultures of removed intrauterine contraceptive devices show no consistent or predominant growth pattern.

An immediate episode of pulmonary edema was followed by a silent interval with subsequent development of a severe, irreversible obstructive syndrome.
