Selection of points for regional anesthesia of the trigeminal nerve and its branches in red pandas (Ailurus fulgens fulgens).

The primary goal of regional anesthesia in exotic animals is to alleviate postoperative pain. It also enables a painless surgery and stands a safer option for surgeries than general anesthesia. Due to the varying anatomy of the head among different species of exotic mammals, anesthesia techniques can differ significantly. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the topography of each species individually. This study describes the location of the cranial foramina associated with the trigeminal nerve, the topography of the surrounding bony structures (Table 1) and soft tissues in three red pandas

Gonad-Sparing Surgical Sterilization in Dogs.

Elective sterilization of pet dogs is a common surgical procedure performed in veterinary practice. The main benefit of sterilization is population control and the reduction in euthanasia of unwanted dogs. The most common methods for sterilizing female and male dogs are ovariohysterectomy (spay; which removes both the ovaries and the uterus) and castration (neutering; which involves removing the testicles), respectively. However, any surgery that removes the gonads changes the animal in both positive and negative ways. There is mounting evidence supporting the long-term health complications as

Quantifying the carbon footprint of canine breed-specific surgical care in a veterinary referral setting.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and apply a calculator to quantify the carbon footprint of breed-specific surgical care in dogs, from hospital admission to discharge, in a veterinary referral setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Breed-specific procedures were defined as surgeries performed uniquely or predominantly in particular breeds due to inherited or conformational pathology, as identified by the relevant clinical services. All dogs undergoing breed-specific procedures at a UK veterinary referral hospital over an eight-month period were prospectively studied. Data collected included procedure type, dia

Adverse events in humans associated with accidental exposure to the livestock brucellosis vaccine RB51.

Brucella abortus strain RB51 vaccine, is an attenuated live bacterial vaccine that was licensed conditionally by the Center for Veterinary Biologics, Veterinary Services, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, USDA, on 23 February 1996, for vaccination of cattle in the United States. Accidental human inoculations can occur during vaccination of cattle, and previous live Brucella vaccines designed for cattle have been known to cause brucellosis in humans. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established passive surveillance for accidental inoculation with the RB51 vaccine i

Pneumoperitoneum Following Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in a Dog.

A 14-year-old intact female mongrel dog presented for periodontal disease underwent anesthesia for dental procedures. During surgery, the dog developed cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) characterized by a sudden drop in end-tidal carbon dioxide and pulseless electrical activity. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated and return of spontaneous circulation was achieved after 20 min. Post-resuscitation imaging revealed moderate pneumoperitoneum, hepatic portal venous gas, and gas within the caudal vena cava without evidence of gastrointestinal rupture or peritonitis. Conservative management inclu

Laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery for the treatment of canine dioctophymosis.

This paper reports on two cases of laparoscopic nephrotomy employed in the treatment of canine dioctophymosis, which is considered a unusual procedure and a new treatment proposal heretofore not performed in veterinary medicine. Two patients were treated, one with a history of hematuria and the other with incidental finding of the parasite in the abdominal cavity during elective ovariohysterectomy. Both dogs were subjected to abdominal ultrasound, which produced images indicating the presence of the parasite in the right side kidney, but with partial parenchymal preservation. The patients were

Feline cutaneous lymphoma: an evaluation of disease presentation and factors affecting response to treatment.

OBJECTIVES: The primary goal of this study was to characterize the clinical presentation of feline cutaneous lymphoma. The secondary aims included determining if treatment or initial response to treatment affected the overall survival of patients, and understanding if disease characteristics such as immunophenotype, cell size or the presence of epitheliotropism influenced response to treatment. METHODS: Veterinary medical oncologists at four academic veterinary teaching hospitals submitted cases of feline patients with cutaneous lymphoma diagnosed by histopathology or cytology. Radiological examination of thorax in Awassi sheep.

Medical imaging methods (magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, X-ray, and ultrasound) are used to guide physicians when diagnosing diseases and planning their treatment. Thorax radiography is frequently preferred for the detection of diseases related to the respiratory system and the heart. When the thorax anatomy is known, this facilitates the detection of diseases in these regions. The vertebral heart score (VHS) is a parameter used for the detection of cardiac anomalies. In cases such as cardiomyopathy and chronic pneumonia, the heart silhouette changes and cardiac enlargement is

Attitudes of Veterinary Teaching Staff and Exposure of Veterinary Students to Early-Age Desexing, with Review of Current Early-Age Desexing Literature.

Approximately 50% of cats admitted to Australian shelters are kittens, and 26% of dogs are puppies, and, particularly for cats, euthanasia rates are often high. Cats can be pregnant by 4 months of age, yet the traditional desexing age is 5-6 months, and studies in Australasia and Nth America reveal that only a minority of veterinarians routinely perform early age desexing (EAD) of cats or dogs, suggesting they are not graduating with these skills. This study aimed to describe the attitudes of veterinary teaching staff in Australian and New Zealand universities towards EAD, and to determine if

A Nonsurgical Method for the Placement of Transpyloric (Nasoenteric) Feeding Tubes Using Fluoroscopic Guidance in Dogs.

Transpyloric tube feeding is a commonly used form of nutritional support when patients are unable to tolerate oral or gastric feeding. Although nasoenteric placement of transpyloric feeding tubes is usually accomplished in humans, anatomic variations in laboratory species have necessitated surgical laparotomy for transpyloric tube placement. We have developed a reliable fluoroscopic technique for the nonsurgical placement of transpyloric feeding tubes in dogs. This technique was developed in an experimental setting and currently is being used in the treatment of canine patients at the Auburn U

First case of peritoneal cystic echinococcosis in a domestic cat caused by Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (genotype 1) associated to feline immunodeficiency virus infection.

A new cystic echinococcosis case in a cat in Uruguay is reported herein. The cat was taken to a veterinary clinic in Rocha city, Uruguay, due to dyspnea, constipation and abdominal enlargement. During surgery a large quantity of cysts was retrieved from the abdominal cavity. The cysts were morphologically studied and confirmed as Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto (genotype 1) by molecular tools using cytochrome oxidase submit 1 and small subunit ribosomal RNA gene as target genes. Moreover, for the first time a coinfection with feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) was detected. FIV-induced

Determining the patency of biliary tracts in dogs with gallbladder mucocele using near-infrared cholangiography with indocyanine green.

Cholecystectomy is indicated for gallbladder mucoceles (GBM). Evaluating the patency of the biliary duct and precise biliary tree visualization is crucial for reducing the risk of compromised bile flow after surgery. Therefore, intraoperative cholangiography (IOC) is recommended during cholecystectomy to prevent biliary tract injury. Although indocyanine green (ICG) cholangiography has been extensively reported in human medicine, only one study has been conducted in veterinary medicine. Therefore, this study aimed to demonstrate the use of ICG for IOC to identify fluorescent biliary tract imag

Use of wound infusion catheters for delivery of local anesthetic following standing partial ostectomy of thoracolumbar vertebral spinous processes in horses is not associated with increased surgical site infections.

BACKGROUND: Wound infusion catheters (WICs) have been used in humans and some veterinary species for post-operative local anesthetic administration following a variety of surgical procedures, aiming to reduce post-operative analgesia requirements and improve patient comfort. Benefit in reduction in pain, post-operative analgesia requirements and length of hospital stay are well documented in humans, but use of WICs may not have been widely adopted in veterinary species due to the concern of increased complications, such as dehiscence or surgical site infection (SSI), creating a barrier to thei

Video-based compilation of acute pain behaviours in cats.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work was to create a video-based compilation of acute pain behaviours in cats as an open-access online resource for training of veterinary health professionals. METHODS: A database comprising 60 h of video recordings of cats was used. Videos were previously recorded after ethical approval and written client consent forms, and involved cats with different types (eg, medical, surgical, trauma, orofacial) and degrees (eg, from no pain to severe pain) of acute pain, before and after surgery or the administration of analgesia. The database included videos of cats of dif

Duodenogastric intussusception with concurrent gastric foreign body in a dog: a case report and literature review.

A 3 yr old spayed female boxer weighing 22.8 kg was presented for severe, acute vomiting and tenesmus. Tachycardia, tachypnea, dehydration, and abdominal pain were present on physical examination. Abdominal radiographs showed a foreign object (golf ball) in the fundus of the stomach, and a larger, round, soft-tissue opacity mass in the region of the pylorus. Endoscopic removal of the foreign object was unsuccessful. A large soft-tissue mass (duodenogastric intussusception) was visualized with endoscopy, but was not correctly diagnosed until surgery. A midline exploratory celiotomy was performe

Successful treatment of patent ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension using sildenafil and beraprost sodium in two dogs.

Two dogs with patent ductus arteriosus and severe pulmonary hypertension were presented to our veterinary teaching hospital. In both dogs, sildenafil was initiated to treat pulmonary hypertension, and surgery was supposed to be scheduled after dose titration. Although no obvious improvement in pulmonary hypertension was observed, no dog had polycythaemia or an increased haematocrit level. The dogs underwent ductal occlusion, and treatment with beraprost sodium was subsequently initiated. Thereafter, severe pulmonary hypertension dramatically improved. No dog showed any clinical sign of right h
