Prevalence of Neospora caninum Exposure in Wild Pigs (Sus scrofa) from Oklahoma with Implications of Testing Method on Detection.

Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite, reported as a leading cause of cattle abortions and reproductive failure worldwide, costing the cattle industry approximately $1.3 billion annually. With wild pig (Sus scrofa) populations estimated at over six million in the United States, contact between wild pigs and livestock is inevitable, mainly because of the widespread geographic co-occurrence of the two species. As a known reservoir for numerous fungal, bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases, wild pigs are of particular importance for human and veterinary health relative to the prevention of i

Genotyping of Toxoplasma gondii in wild boar (Sus scrofa) in southern Italy: Epidemiological survey and associated risk for consumers.

Toxoplasma gondii is a widespread protozoan parasite (phylum Apicomplexa), which causes a zoonotic parasitic disease, known as toxoplasmosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and genotypes of T. gondii in wild boars of southern Italy and thus to assess the risk of infection for consumers. The boars were inspected during the hunting season within the regional project 'Wild Boar Emergency Plan in Campania', and molecular analyses were performed on 338 boars analysing a total number of 884 matrices (263 brains, 310 hearts and 311 masseter muscles). Toxoplasma gondii was detect

Anatomic characterisation of the parietal branches arising from the internal iliac artery in the foetal pig (Sus scrofa domestica).

BACKGROUND: It is critical for surgeons to have a full understanding of the complex courses and ramifications of the human internal iliac artery and its parietal branches. Although numerous anatomical studies have been performed, not all variations at this site are currently understood. Therefore, we characterised these blood vessels in foetal pigs to provide additional insight from a comparative anatomical perspective. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen half-pelvis specimens from foetal pigs were dissected and examined on macroscopic scale. RESULTS: Among our findings, we identified the intern

Swine (Sus scrofa) as a Model of Postinfarction Mitral Regurgitation and Techniques to Accommodate Its Effects during Surgical Repair.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is a common heart-valve lesion after myocardial infarction in humans. Because it is considered a risk factor for accelerated heart failure and death, various surgical approaches and catheter-based devices to correct it are in development. Lack of a reproducible animal model of MR after myocardial infarction and reliable techniques to perform open-heart surgery in these diseased models led to the use of healthy animals to test new devices. Thus, most devices that are deemed safe in healthy animals have shown poor results in human efficacy studies, hampering progress in

Seroprevalence and parasite load of Toxoplasma gondii in Mexican hairless pig (Sus scrofa) tissues from the Southeast of Mexico.

This study aimed to estimate the seroprevalence and determine the parasite load of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) in the heart and tongue tissues and the semimembranosus/gracilis muscles in a population of Mexican hairless pig (MHP). A cross-sectional study was conducted in 81 MHP, 9-12 weeks of age, from 10 municipalities in Yucatan, Mexico. The prevalence was estimated by the detection of T. gondii IgG antibodies via an indirect ELISA assay. The parasite burden was also determined by testing genomic DNA from sampled tissues using quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR), which amplified a 62bp produ

Influence of tongue inspection during cysticercosis diagnosis on some behavioral and physiological stress measures in pigs (Sus scrofa domestica).

To evaluate the level of stress induced by the tongue inspection method during cysticercosis diagnosis in pigs at 60 and 90 kg, 27 animals were assigned to one of three experimental groups. In the first group (T1), pigs were held with a snout noose. In addition, animals in T2 were subjected to tongue inspection, while in T0, none of the procedures described above were performed. Resistance to be handled and serum cortisol concentration were higher (P < 0.05) than those from T0 in T1 and T2 groups, for 60- and 90-kg pigs. Time to return to the feeder observed the same pattern than previous vari

The first report on Cryptosporidium suis and Cryptosporidium pig genotype II in Eurasian wild boars (Sus scrofa) (Czech Republic).

A total of 193 faecal samples of adult Eurasian wild boars were collected at 12 enclosures across the Czech Republic and examined for Cryptosporidium infection using both microscopic and molecular tools. Cryptosporidium oocysts were not detected in any of the 193 faecal samples examined using the aniline-carbol-methyl violet staining method. Thirty-two positive cases of Cryptosporidium infection were detected using either genus- or species-specific nested PCR. Mono-infection with Cryptosporidium suis and Cryptosporidium pig genotype II were found in 13 and 7 cases, respectively. Five mixed inf

Epidemiological survey of trichinellosis in wild boar (Sus scrofa) and fox (Vulpes vulpes) in a French insular region, Corsica.

The Mediterranean island of Corsica was considered Trichinella-free until 2004, when T. britovi larvae were discovered in domestic pigs at meat inspection. One red fox was also found infected the same year and in the same area than the infected pigs. This last finding highlighted the presence of trichinellosis in Corsican wildlife. A Trichinella survey was thus performed in wild boar (Sus scrofa) and fox (Vulpes vulpes), the two large wild species present on the island, to determine prevalence of muscle larvae and antibodies. Diaphragm muscles of 1881 wild boars and 74 forelegs of foxes were t

Mass spectrometry strategies applied to the characterization of proline-rich peptides from secretory parotid granules of pig (Sus scrofa).

Basic proline-rich proteins (bPRPs) are a class of proteins widely present in saliva of humans and other mammals. They are synthesized as preproproteins and enzymatically cleaved into small peptides before secretion from the salivary glands. Recently, we characterized two proline-rich peptides (SP-A and SP-B) in parotid secretory granules of pig (Sus Scrofa) that are derived from three isoforms of a PRP proprotein (Swiss-Prot data bank: Q95JC9-1, Q95JC9-2 and Q95JC9-3). Together the coding regions for SP-A and SP-B, which are repeated many times, account for 52-70% of the coding regions of the

Identification and characterization of the porcine (Sus scrofa) survival motor neuron (SMN1) gene: an animal model for therapeutic studies.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by the degeneration of the motor neurons of the spinal cord leading to muscle atrophy. SMA is a result of a loss-of-function of the gene survival motor neuron-1 (SMN1). We have chosen to generate a transgenic swine model of SMA for the development and testing of therapeutics and evaluation of toxicology. To this end, we report the first cloning and identification of the swine SMN1 gene and show that there is significant sequence homology between swine and human SMN throughout the coding region. A review of the comparative anatomy of the domestic pig (Sus scrofa domestica) and its relevance to translational research in abdominal transplantation.

This narrative review summarizes and synthesizes the current literature regarding the comparative anatomy of pigs and humans, focusing on organ systems commonly involved in abdominal transplantation with the aim of supporting the safe and effective use of porcine models in preclinical studies. It also integrates practical insights from experimental surgery to highlight key considerations in perioperative care and surgical technique in porcine models. Pigs demonstrate substantial anatomical and physiological similarities to humans, making them ideal large-animal models for transplantation resea

Survey the Occurrence of Globocephalus urosubulatus (Nematoda: Ancylostomatidae) in Wild Boars (Sus scrofa) in the State of São Paulo, Brazil.

Although previous studies have characterized the helminth fauna of wild boars kept in captivity in Brazil, records on these helminths in free-ranging animals are still scarce. In view of this, we aimed in our work to investigate the occurrence and morphological and morphometric characteristics of gastrointestinal helminths in wild Sus scrofa from the northwest region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. The digestive systems of 10 animals (5 males and 5 females of different ages) were used in this study. Each anatomical segment was washed and sieved under running water, and the helminths were se

Efficacy of Intravenous Hydroxocobalamin for Treatment of Sodium Methanethiolate Exposure in a Swine Model (Sus scrofa) of Severe Methanethiol Toxicity.

INTRODUCTION: Methanethiol is a highly toxic chemical present in crude oil and natural gas. At high concentrations, methanethiol causes metabolic acidosis, seizures, myocardial infarction, coma, and death. Occupational Health and Safety Administration lists methanethiol as a potential terrorist weapon. Methanethiol blocks the electron transport chain, resulting in lactic acidosis and acidemia. There is no specific treatment for methanethiol. Our objective was to measure the efficacy of intravenous (IV) hydroxocobalamin (HOC) versus no treatment (control) in methanethiol-induced apnea in a swin

A Yorkshire swine (Sus scrofa domesticus) model for nerve regeneration and ischemia based on the sciatic nerve and femoral artery.

Animal studies are essential to biomedical research and the cornerstone is a reproducible animal model. While there are many reports on rodent peripheral nerve injury models, a large animal model is essential to confirm the effects of nerve regeneration over the longer distances of regeneration required in humans. Swine have long been used as a large animal model for other surgical and biomedical studies. This paper represents a novel neurovascular injury model in the Sus scrofa domesticus swine (American Yorkshire pig). This paper will describe our experience and recommendations with pre-oper

Implication of cortisol and 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase enzymes in the development of porcine (Sus scrofa domestica) ovarian follicles and cysts.

This study investigated cortisol inactivation by 11beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11beta HSD) enzymes in porcine granulosa cells from antral follicles at different developmental stages and in ovarian cysts. In granulosa cells, cortisol oxidation increased threefold with antral follicle diameter (P < 0.001). This trend was paralleled by a threefold increase in NADP(+)-dependent 11beta-dehydrogenase activity in granulosa cell homogenates with follicle diameter. Intact granulosa cells from ovarian cysts exhibited significantly lower enzyme activities than cells from large antral follicles. Ne

Implantation of porcine amniotic epithelial cells model for myocardial infarction combined with cardiomyocyte therapy of pigs (Sus scrofa domestica).

BACKGROUND: Myocardial infarction (MI) is the most common heart disorder in patients with cardiovascular disease. Obstruction of blood flow to the heart causes ischemia and results in heart pump failure. AIM: This study aims to evaluate the effects of porcine amniotic epithelial cell (pAEC)-based stem cell therapy alone and in combination with cardiomyocytes to understand its potential benefits in MI treatment. METHODS: In this study, we conducted MI therapy using pluripotent stem cells derived from the amnion (AEC) implanted into the infarcted heart. Nine domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domestica
