There have been divergent opinions about the prognosis of temporomandibular joint diskectomy. Therefore we have retrospectively evaluated all diskectomies performed in Sweden during the period from 1965 to 1985. Eighty-seven patients had been operated upon with this technique and 69, with a follow-up time of 6 months or longer (median 20 months), were analyzed. The median of maximal opening increased and 74% of the patients had less frequent and less intensive pain at the follow-up examination than before surgery. The spina bifida rate in Sweden from 1947 to 1981 has been studied using various sources of information, including two central computerised registers. During the period the rate approximately halved, but the decline was not smooth and occurred in three "waves." When the geographical location of high risk areas within each wave was studied, they were found to differ. The findings are discussed in the light of an environmental aetiology hypothesis of this malformation.

Five hundred thirty-two cases of slipped capital femoral epiphysis (physiolysis colli femoris--PCF) treated at three orthopedic departments in southern Sweden between 1910 and 1982 were used for epidemiologic studies. Acanthamoeba keratitis is a sight-threatening corneal infection. A delay in diagnosis and lack of amoeba-specific treatment contribute to a generally poor prognosis. BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Energy metabolism is altered in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) but the role of diabetes is largely unknown.
METHODS: A population-based case-control study was conducted of 5108 ALS cases and 25,540 individually matched population controls during 1991-2010. Information on ALS and pre-existing diabetes was retrieved from the Swedish Patient Register to explore the association of ALS with diabetes overall and with insulin-dependent or non-insulin-dependent diabetes specifically. Variation of the association by diabetes duration and age was also studied.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical, head, and neck cancers. We studied 483 patients at a youth clinic in Stockholm, Sweden, and found oral HPV prevalence was 9.3% and significantly higher for female youth with than without cervical HPV infection (p = 0.043). Most oral HPV types matched the co-occurring cervical types.
