Recovery Time Profiling After Short-, Middle- and Long-Distance Swimming Performance.

Piras, A, Cortesi, M, Campa, F, Perazzolo, M, and Gatta, G. Recovery time profiling after short-, middle- and long-distance swimming performance. J Strength Cond Res 33(5): 1408-1415, 2019-We investigated cardiac autonomic responses and hemodynamic parameters on recovery time after short-, middle- and long-swimming performance. Ten male regional-level swimmers were tested to estimate time and frequency domains of arterial baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) and heart rate variability after 100, 200, and 400 m of front crawl. We found a BRS reduction for 90 minutes after a maximal 100- and 200-m front

Hamstring Injury After Swimming in a Patient With Multiple Hereditary Osteochondromatosis.

Reported here is a 20-year-old male suffered a hamstring strain after a prolonged bout of swimming. After ultrasound imaging, the patient's injury was considered to be the result of nearby osteochondromas. Case reports have been previously published concerning anterior cruciate ligament injury, rotator cuff tears, subacromial impingement, or femoroacetabular impingement in multiple osteochondromatosis. However, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of a hamstring injury secondary to an osteochondroma.

Statin use and self-reported swimming performance in US masters swimmers.

Exercise and treating hyperlipidaemia with statins are two integral components of the American Heart Association guidelines to reduce cardiovascular risk in adults. Since statins can cause myalgias and myopathies, they could affect the duration or intensity of an exercise regimen. To determine the impact of statin use in adult masters swimmers, a survey was distributed to examine the association between swimming performance and statin usage in adult swimmers (≥35 years). After excluding those with chronic diseases or taking drugs that reduce physical capacity, 749 swimmers (118 taking statins,

Tight swimming trunks to prevent post scrotal surgery: an experimental justification.

PURPOSE: To conduct a study to measure the pressure effects of the different scrotal supports applied on a simulated expanding scrotal hematoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created a model of an expanding hematoma with simultaneous pressure recording using a urodynamics system. Pressures were recorded independently first without application of any support. Then, three types of scrotal supports were tested, including Euron Net Knickers, scrotal suspensory bandage, and tight swimming trunks brand Speedo® brief and shorts. Subsequent pressures were recorded using the model created, which was appli

Chromatin alterations in response to forced swimming underlie increased prodynorphin transcription.

Antagonism of the kappa opioid receptor (KOR) has been reported to have anti-depressant-like properties. The dynorphin/KOR system is a crucial neurochemical substrate underlying the pathologies of addictive diseases, affective disorders and other disease states. However, the molecular underpinnings and neuroanatomical localization of the dysregulation of this system have not yet been fully elucidated. Utilizing the Porsolt Forced Swim Test (FST), an acute stressor commonly used as in rodent models measuring antidepressant efficacy, male Sprague-Dawley rats were subject to forced swimming for 1

Swimming pool attendance and respiratory symptoms and allergies among Dutch children.

OBJECTIVES: To describe associations among swimming, respiratory health, allergen sensitisation and Clara cell protein 16 (CC16) levels in Dutch schoolchildren. Trichloramine levels in swimming pool air were determined to assess potential exposure levels. METHODS: Respiratory health and pool attendance information was collected from 2359 children, aged 6-13 years. Serum from 419 children was tested for allergen sensitisation and CC16 levels. Trichloramine levels were assessed in nine swimming facilities. RESULTS: Trichloramine levels ranged from 0.03 to 0.78 mg/m3 (average 0.21 mg/m3). Repor

Running, swimming and diving modifies neuroprotecting globins in the mammalian brain.

The vulnerability of the human brain to injury following just a few minutes of oxygen deprivation with submergence contrasts markedly with diving mammals, such as Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii), which can remain underwater for more than 90 min while exhibiting no neurological or behavioural impairment. This response occurs despite exposure to blood oxygen levels concomitant with human unconsciousness. To determine whether such aquatic lifestyles result in unique adaptations for avoiding ischaemic-hypoxic neural damage, we measured the presence of circulating (haemoglobin) and resident

Extended swimming exercise reduces inflammatory and peripheral neuropathic pain in rodents.

UNLABELLED: Physical exercise is often recommended to patients who have chronic pain. However, only a small number of studies report exercise-induced analgesia in the setting of inflammatory pain, and even fewer relate long-term exercise to reductions in neuropathic pain. To address these questions, we evaluated the effect of extended swimming exercise in animal models of inflammatory (intraplantar injection of dilute formalin) and neuropathic (partial peripheral nerve injury) pain. We found that 9 days of swimming exercise in 37 degrees C water for 90 min/d decreased licking and flinching res

Shoulder impingement in front-crawl swimming: II. Analysis of stroking technique.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the technical causes of shoulder impingement experienced by front-crawl swimmers. METHODS: The shoulder movements exhibited during performance of the front-crawl stroke were measured using three-dimensional videography, and the instances at which each shoulder was experiencing impingement were identified. RESULTS: On average, impingement occurred 24.8% of the stroke time (%ST). In one or more phases of the stroke cycle, each subject experienced impingement in some trials and not in other trials. This suggests that stroke technique, and not

Slow muscle function of Pacific bonito (Sarda chiliensis) during steady swimming.

The Pacific bonito, Sarda chiliensis, is anatomically intermediate between mackerel and tuna. The specialisations exhibited by tuna are present in the bonito, but to a lesser degree. Slow-twitch muscle strain and activity patterns were determined during steady swimming (tailbeat frequency 1.2-3.2 Hz) at four locations on the body of Sarda chiliensis using sonomicrometry and electromyography. Both strain and the phase of electromygraphic activity were independent of tailbeat frequency. The strain of superficial slow-twitch muscle increased from +/-3.1 % l(0) at 0.35FL to +/-5.8 % l(0) at 0.65FL

Muscle strain histories in swimming milkfish in steady and sprinting gaits.

Adult milkfish (Chanos chanos) swam in a water-tunnel flume over a wide range of speeds. Fish were instrumented with sonomicrometers to measure shortening of red and white myotomal muscle. Muscle strain was also calculated from simultaneous overhead views of the swimming fish. This allowed us to test the hypothesis that the muscle shortens in phase with local body bending. The fish swam at slow speeds [U<2.6 fork lengths s-1 (=FL s-1)] where only peripheral red muscle was powering body movements, and also at higher speeds (2. 6>U>4.6 FL s-1) where they adopted a sprinting gait in which the whi

Explosion risk from swimming pool chlorinators and review of chlorine toxicity.

Two patients were admitted to the hospital emergency room in respiratory distress after an accidental explosion involving chlorinating agents for the swimming pool. The two primary agents involved were calcium hypochlorite and trichloro-s-triazinetrione; both are commonly used chlorinating agents. These chemicals were tested in a bomb apparatus measuring temperature and gas production. Combining the two chlorinators at 2, 6, 12, or 18 g of each produced a progressive increase in gas production from 234 to 1422 mL. The temperature increased from 30 degrees C at 2 g to 63 degrees C at 18 g. The

[Telemetry during swimming in risk evaluation of heart patients in rehabilitation].

Swimming differs from other forms of exercise due to its additional hydrostatic and thermal burden. It was investigated whether additional pathologic findings in comparison to history and standard exercise tests can be obtained by holter monitoring during swimming. Symptoms and exercise electrocardiogram were compared with the holter ECG during swimming in 125 patients divided into 3 groups with different diagnoses and severity of cardiac diseases. In a considerable percentage of patients ischemic changes and severe rhythm disturbances were found only during swimming with further diagnostic an

Chlorine poisoning at the swimming pool revisited: anatomy of two minidisasters.

A case of acute chlorine gas exposure in a swimming pool attendant was previously reported (Clin Tox 13:377-381, 1978). In April 1986, approximately 30 people, including a swimming coach, lifeguards, and competitive swimmers ranging in age from 5 to 12 years old, were exposed to heavy concentrations of chlorine gas at a large indoor swimming pool. The coach, one lifeguard, and 18 of the children were hospitalized. In June 1988, a similar exposure occurred at the same swimming pool, and 11 persons were affected. Information from these 2 incidents illustrates 4 important factors in disaster prev

Swimming pool immersion accidents: an analysis from the Brisbane drowning study.

An analysis of a consecutive series of 66 swimming pool immersion accidents is presented; 74% of these occurred in in-ground swimming pools. The estimated accident rate per pool is five times greater for in-ground pools compared with above-ground pools, where pools are inadequately fenced. Backyard swimming pools account for 74% of pool acidents. Motel and caravan park pools account for 9% of childhood immersion accidents, but the survival rate (17%) is very low. Fifty per cent of pool accidents occur in the family's own backyard pool, and 13.6% in a neighbour's pool; in the latter the surviva

Relation between critical speed and long-distance swimming performance: exploratory study.

This exploratory study aimed to evaluate the association of single- and multi-parameter models based on short-distance front crawl dash (i.e., 400 [T400] and 50 [T50] meters (m)) and critical speed (CS) with long-distance performance in talented swimmers. T400 and T50 of 26 females and 22 males (15.6 ± 1.6 years) were tested in a controlled setting and used to compute CS. Associations between long-distance swimming performance of 800 and 1500 m events and CS, T400, or T50 were examined, using single- (separate simple linear regressions) and multi- (multiple linear regressions with cluster-robu
