UNLABELLED: Sympathetic nervous system may play an important role in development and maintenance of hypertension. Its activity can be assessed by plasma levels of catecholamines, neuropeptide Y (NPY) and adrenergic receptor density. Hypertensive subjects may be more prone to reveal overactivity of sympathetic nervous system, for instance as a result of physical stress. The aim of the study was to determine the activity of sympathetic nervous system in young patients with newly recognized, untreated mild hypertension.
INVESTIGATED GROUPS AND METHODS: The study was carried out in 22 patients (a…

Our previous studies demonstrate that chronic insulin administration exacerbates hypertension in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). In the present study, we tested the hypothesis that the pressor effect of insulin in SHR is medicated by sympathetic nervous system overactivity. Male SHR (7 weeks old) were given daily subcutaneous injection of insulin or vehicle for 3 days, after which each rat received an intravenous infusion of the peripheral ganglionic blocker hexamethonium. Two days later, in a second experiment, the infusion protocol was repeated with the alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonist cl…

The contribution of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) to pain, mechanical allodynia (MA), and hyperalgesia in humans is controversial. A clearer understanding is crucial to guide therapeutic use of sympatholytic surgery, blocks, and drug treatments. In rats, capsaicin-evoked MA, and to some extent, pinprick hyperalgesia (PPH), can be blocked with alpha-adrenoreceptor antagonists. In this study, we examined the contribution of the SNS to MA and PPH in normal human subjects by blocking alpha-adrenoreceptors with intravenous phentolamine. In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover stud…

The main physiological adaptative systems occurring during orthostatism are discussed. The nervous mechanisms and especially baroreceptor pathways allow a rapid adaptation to the new hemodynamic conditions whereas hormones (mainly vasopressin) are involved later. The role of baroreflex and cardiocirculatory mechanisms is explained by the description of adaptative mechanisms in giraffe, an animal with its brain so far above the ground. The changes in adrenoceptor receptivity and the adaptative homeostatic mechanisms of the autonomic nervous system during orthostatism in human are discussed. The

Patients with an impaired sympathetic nervous system had increased sensitivity to the pressor action of AVP, in keeping with knowledge derived from experimental studies. These data suggest an interaction between AVP and alpha-adrenergic function, whereby the latter tends to attenuate the pressor actio …

Possible abnormalities in the sympathetic nervous system responsible for circulatory disturbances with obstructive jaundice were investigated by determining the reactions of the heart and peripheral blood vessels using alpha.beta receptor stimulants or blockers. Mongrel dogs were randomly assigned to three groups: untreated (UT) and sham-operated (SO) controls and 3-week-old bile duct ligated (BDL). Under anesthesia with Nembutal, circulatory parameters and blood catecholamine concentration were measured. In term of alpha- and beta-adrenergic reactions, reactions in the sympathetic nervous sys…

To test the validity of the hypothesis that irritation of the cervical sympathetic nerves is a cause of hypertonicity of the cervical soft supporting tissues, especially the deep nuchal muscles, and that this hypertonicity is a cause of traumatic vertigo of cervical origin, we examined 44 vertigo cases with whiplash injury by testing equilibrium function and EMG discharges from the neck before and after administration of drugs affecting the sympathetic receptors. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Administration of iso-proterenol (beta-receptor stimulant) caused a significant increase in

This study investigated the advantages of gerbils as a sympathetic nervous system (SNS)-driven model for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and evaluated the therapeutic potential of soy isoflavones (SIFs). Gerbils exhibited unique SNS characteristics, with an adrenal gland-to-kidney weight ratio 2-3 times higher than that of C57BL/6 mice and Wistar rats, demonstrating elevated levels of adrenaline (AE) and noradrenaline (NE) as well as more pronounced anxiety-like behaviors, indicating enhanced SNS activity. Additionally, gerbils possessed liver lipid metabolism and storage capacities …

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We aim to explore the effect of sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on choroid thickness (ChT) and axial length (AL).
METHODS: Students of grade 2 and 3 from a primary school were included and followed for 1 year. Visual acuity, refraction, AL and ChT were measured. Morning urine samples were collected for determining SNS activity by analysing concentrations of epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine using the liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The most important factor (factor 1) was calculated using factor analysis to comprehensively indicate the SNS activity.

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with repetitive breathing obstructions during sleep. These episodes of hypoxia and associated arousals from sleep induce physiological stress and nocturnal over-activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). One consequence of OSA is impairment in a range of cognitive domains. Previous research into cognitive impairment in OSA have focussed on intermittent hypoxia and disrupted sleep, but not nocturnal over-activation of the SNS. Therefore, we investigated whether nocturnal over-activity of the SNS was associated with cognitive impairments in O…

Three recent renal denervation studies in both drug-naïve and drug-treated hypertensive patients demonstrated a significant reduction of ambulatory blood pressure compared with respective sham control groups. Improved trial design, selection of relevant patient cohorts, and optimized interventional procedures have likely contributed to these positive findings. However, substantial variability in the blood pressure response to renal denervation can still be observed and remains a challenging and important problem. The International Sympathetic Nervous System Summit was convened to bring togethe…

BACKGROUND: Stress is defined as a complicated state that related to homeostasis disturbances, over-activity of the sympathetic nervous system and hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis responses. Cardiac preconditioning reduces myocardial damages.
OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to assess the cardioprotective effects of acute physical stress against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury through the activation of the sympathetic nervous system.
METHODS: Thirty-two male Wistar rats were divided into four groups; (1) IR (n = 8): rats underwent I/R, (2) Acute stress (St+IR) (n = 8): physical stress…

Complex interactions between periphery and the brain regulate food intake in mammals. Cannabinoid type-1 (CB1) receptor antagonists are pote … of β-adrenergic transmission, suggesting that this effect is mediated by increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Consistently, we found that rimonabant increases gastrointestinal metabolism via increased peripheral β-adrenergic receptor signaling in peripheral organs, including the gastrointestinal tract. A sedentary lifestyle is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and rates of inactivity and cardiovascular disease are highly prevalent in our society. Cardiovascular disease is often associated with overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, which has both direct and indirect effects on multiple organ systems. Although it has been known for some time that exercise positively affects the brain in terms of memory and cognition, only recently have changes in how the brain regulates the cardiovascular system been examined in terms of physical activity and inactivity. This brief revi…

OBJECTIVE: To better understand the changes in hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) function after remission of depression. We characterized these systems at baseline and in response to a psychosocial stressor in a cohort of women remitted from recurrent major depression as well as in never-depressed healthy female controls.
METHODS: Baseline HPA function was measured via saliva cortisol sampling at 8 AM and 4 PM over 7 days as well as quantification of urinary overnight cortisol secretion. The HPA system response to a psychosocial stressor was assess…
