Thirteen patients with expansion of an unusual subset of T lymphocytes, defined by large size, cytoplasmic granularity and CD3+ CD8+ Leu 7+ surface phenotype, are reported. Although morphologically and/or phenotypically abnormal lymphocytes were found in all patients, only five had an absolute peripheral blood lymphocytosis. Ten patients had a bone marrow lymphocytosis. Human T-helper cells express membrane-bound CD4 antigen whose many epitopes are recognized by different monoclonal antibodies. The epitope recognized by Leu-3a and similar clones has been shown to be the location for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) receptor. We have found a unique blood donor whose CD4+ T-helper lymphocytes were lacking Leu-3a epitope. CD4+ T-helper cells lacking Leu-3a epitope might be resistant to HIV infection.

Activation of latent Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in the spleen has been studied by co-cultivation with allogeneic or syngeneic cells. The kinetics of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in a patient with stage IV-S neuroblastoma were examined for 2 months. CTL were detectable during the preoperative and postoperative periods in this stage IV-S neuroblastoma patient, in spite of the tumor-bearing condition. Furthermore, the patient's mother showed the same level of CTL. This experiment suggests that patients with stage IV-S neuroblastoma have a constantly high level of CTL, and that this immunologic response is predominantly hereditary.

Herpesvirus sylvilagus infection of cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) was studied as a model of herpesvirus-induced lymphoproliferative disorders.
