Evaluation of the efficacy and safety of text messages targeting adherence to cardiovascular medications in secondary prevention: the txt2heart Colombia randomised controlled trial protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Anti-platelet therapy, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors/angiotensin II receptor blockers, beta-blockers and statins are cost-effective in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD) for reducing the risk of ASCVD events. Unfortunately, there is abundant evidence that adherence to these cardiovascular medications is far from ideal. A recent Cochrane review showed a potential beneficial effect of Short Message Service (SMS) interventions on adherence to medication in ASCVD patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The txt2heart study is a pragmatic randomised singl

A telephone- and text-message based telemedical care concept for patients with mental health disorders--study protocol for a randomized, controlled study design.

BACKGROUND: As in other countries worldwide, the prevalence of mental disorders in Germany is high. Although numerically a dense network of in- and outpatient psychiatric health services exists, the availability in rural and remote regions is insufficient. In rural regions, telemedical concepts can be a chance to unburden and complement the existing healthcare system. Telemedical concepts consisting of video or telephone consulting show first positive results, but there are only a few studies with a randomized controlled design. To improve the treatment of patients with mental disorders in rural

A pilot randomized controlled trial assessing the feasibility and preliminary effects of a text message intervention to promote secure storage and disposal of prescription opioids.

BACKGROUND: Unused prescription opioids are a major source of diversion and nonmedical use, yet adoption of secure storage and disposal practices remains low. Scalable behavioral interventions are needed to promote medication safety. We pilot tested a theory-informed short message service (SMS) text-based intervention designed to encourage secure storage during treatment and disposal of unused prescription opioids following treatment. METHODS: We conducted a two-arm, single-blinded randomized controlled pilot trial (June-December 2024) among adults prescribed an opioid medication (≤30 days).

Key Elements and Theoretical Foundations for the Design and Delivery of Text Messages to Boost Medication Adherence in Patients With Diabetes, Hypertension, and Hyperlipidemia: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Medication nonadherence in cardiometabolic syndrome negatively impacts patients' quality of life, health care systems, and economic stability. Despite extensive research, no universally recognized strategy has been established to improve adherence. SMS text messaging has emerged as a widely accessible and cost-effective intervention, particularly when the intervention is structured using behavioral theories. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to review existing literature and identify key factors in the design of SMS text messaging interventions for improving medication adherence among p…

An intervention delivered by text message to increase the acceptability of effective contraception among young women in Palestine: study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy can negatively impact women's lives and is associated with poorer health outcomes for women and children. Many women, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, continue to face obstacles in avoiding unintended pregnancy. In the State of Palestine, a survey conducted in 2006 estimated that 38% of pregnancies are unintended. In 2014, unmet need for contraception was highest among young women aged 20-24 years, at 15%. Mobile phones are increasingly being used to deliver health support. Once developed, interventions delivered by mobile phone are often cheap

A randomized controlled trial of daily text messages versus monthly paper diaries to collect bleeding data after intrauterine device insertion.

OBJECTIVE: Bleeding data in contraceptive trials are often collected using daily diaries, but data quality may vary due to compliance and recall bias. Text messaging is a widespread and promising modality for data collection. STUDY DESIGN: This trial randomized participants 1:1 to use text messages or paper diaries to report on bleeding experienced during the 90 days after intrauterine device (IUD) insertion. Participants chose either the copper T380A or the 52-mg levonorgestrel IUD. Our primary outcome was number of days of reported bleeding data. We hypothesized that data gathered with dail…

Text messaging and brief phone calls for weight loss in overweight and obese English- and Spanish-speaking adults: A 1-year, parallel-group, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss interventions based solely on text messaging (short message service [SMS]) have been shown to be modestly effective for short periods of time and in some populations, but limited evidence is available for positive longer-term outcomes and for efficacy in Hispanic populations. Also, little is known about the comparative efficacy of weight loss interventions that use SMS coupled with brief, technology-mediated contact with health coaches, an important issue when considering the scalability and cost of interventions. We examined the efficacy of a 1-year intervention design…

BACKGROUND: While rates of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are extremely high among adolescents and young adults in the United States, rates of HIV and STI testing remain low. Given the ubiquity of mobile phones and the saliency of peers for youths, text messaging strategies may successfully promote HIV or STI testing among youths. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to understand the types of messages youths believe were motivating and persuasive when asked to text friends to encourage them to seek HIV or STI testing services at a neighborhood clinic. METHODS: We implemented an adole…
