PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to assess the clinicopathologic features, treatment outcomes, and role of adjuvant radiation therapy (RT) in cervical thymic neoplasm involving the thyroid gland or neck.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical and pathologic records of eight patients with cervical thymic neoplasm were reviewed retrospectively. All patients underwent surgical resection, including thyroidectomy or mass excision. Adjuvant RT was added in five patients with adverse clinicopathologic features. The radiation doses ranged from 54 Gy/27 fractions to 66 Gy/30 fractions delivered to th

Within a 75-year period, 20 patients with primary nonteratomatous carcinomas of the thymus were seen at the Mayo Clinic. Fourteen were males and six were females, with a mean age of 48 years. Thirteen of the lesions were classified as poorly differentiated or spindling squamous cell carcinomas. One neoplasm was a sarcomatoid carcinoma, and two showed both squamous cell and neuroendocrine ultrastructural features. The remaining four tumors had both light- and electron-microscopic features of neuroendocrine carcinomas. In all 20 patients, careful clinical and pathologic examinations, including a

Migration of the embryonic thymus is thought to be the basis for the formation of ectopic thymic tumors. Thymic ectopy may be a result of the abnormal migration of the third or fourth branchial cleft to the anterior mediastinum during weeks 5-6 of embryonic development. However, ectopic thymic carcinoma has highly nonspecific histologic features and occurs in variable and unpredictable locations making it difficult to diagnose. However, the clinical diagnosis and treatment should not overlook the possibility of ectopic thymic tumors. Here, we report a case of ectopic thymic carcinoma diagnosed

The first report of an association between myasthenia gravis (MG) and the thymus gland was in 1901. Although the underlying mechanisms are uncertain, thymic abnormalities are clearly associated with MG. This review article summarises, from a historical point of view, our knowledge of these associations, and the surgical and medical treatment of MG, including symptom management, immunosuppression, intravenous immunoglobulin and plasmapheresis.

AIMS: Since cytokeratins (CKs) are useful as differentiation markers for histogenetic and classification studies, we investigated the CK profiles of the thymus and thymomas in an attempt to understand the histogenetic correlation and to propose a histological classification.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine thymuses and 34 thymomas were immunostained for various CKs of different molecular weights and involucrin. Based on cytomorphology and histoarchitecture, thymomas were classified into spindle cell (SC), small polygonal cell (SPC), mixed, organoid, large polygonal cell (LPC) and squamoid (SQ) thym

Microscopic observation data collected from approximately 1800 male and female Sprague Dawley (SD) control rats used on 104-week carcinogenicity studies performed at North American Labcorp Early Development, Inc, Madison, WI, were retrospectively evaluated for spontaneous nonneoplastic findings. This study provides incidence of the most common spontaneous nonneoplastic microscopic findings in each organ system of SD rats encountered during 104-week carcinogenicity studies. Some of the most common spontaneous background findings were cardiomyopathy; chronic progressive nephropathy; uterine cyst

PAX2 is a member of the PAX family of transcription factors that, together with PAX8, is involved in the regulation of the organogenesis of the kidney and the Müllerian system. Recent investigations have demonstrated that, among tumors, PAX2 is commonly expressed in epithelial tumors of the kidney and female genital tract. Although PAX2 expression has also been reported in B-cell lymphomas and rhabdomyosarcomas, especially alveolar rhabdomyosarcomas, it has been suggested that the positivity in these tumors was most probably due to a cross-reactivity of the anti-PAX2 antibody used in those inv

Cardiac tumors are rare neoplasms with an incidence of 0.027 cases per 100. Up to 90 % of these tumors are benign but, because of their location, they can be lethal, despite their histology. Most appear in infants aged less than 1 year. Teratomas, which are relatively frequent in the pediatric age group, are usually located in the ovaries, sacrococcygeal area, thorax, and retroperitoneal area. Intrapericardial location is less frequent. In this localization, the clinical manifestation depends on compression of adjacent structures and determines the therapeutic attitude in each case. Antisera were prepared in rabbits by immunization with either human peripheral blood T lymphocytes (PTL) or tonsil B lymphocytes (TBL). Specificities of sequentially absorbed antisera were examined by cytotoxicity testing, immunoperoxidase staining and absorption study. Anti-PTL serum (ATS) reacted with E rosetting lymphocytes in the normal population. ATS was also reactive with some of lymphoid neoplasms, whether neoplastic cells carried E receptors or not. This serum did not lyse any of myelogenous leukemia cells. When antiserum was used in the immunoperoxidase staining, ATS strongly stained

Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) is a disease characterized by cyclic eruptions of papulonodular lesions, which undergo spontaneous healing. Lymphoid malignancies are present in 10%-15% of cases. The type AB thymoma is an epithelial neoplasm composed of both type A (lymphocyte-poor) and type B (lymphocyte-rich) areas. Chemokines are chemotactic cytokines, responsible for leukocyte motility and direct movement. Interactions between chemokines and their receptors have been correlated with homing of lymphoma cells to various tissues. We describe a patient whose type B LyP CD8 lesions completely resol

For unknown reasons, advanced age remains a dominant predictor of poor clinical outcome for nearly all cancers. A decrease in the production of T cells by the thymus accompanies normal aging and parallels the age-dependent increase in cancer progression, but the specific impact of immunity on tumor progression in general is unknown. Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common primary brain neoplasm, is characterized by rapid age-dependent rates of progression and death. In this study, we show levels of CD8(+) recent thymic emigrants (RTEs) accounted for the prognostic power of age on clinic

Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are rare tumors for which treatment options are limited. The ongoing need for improved systemic therapies reflects a limited understanding of tumor biology as well as the normal thymus. The essential role of the thymus in adaptive immunity is largely effected by its epithelial compartment, which directs thymocyte (T-cell) differentiation and immunologic self-tolerance. With aging, the thymus undergoes involution whereby epithelial tissue is replaced by adipose and other connective tissue, decreasing immature T-cell production. Against this natural drive toward i

Thymomas are normally found in the superior mediastinum or the upper part of the anterior mediastinum. We report a case of thymoma arising in the inferior aspect of the anterior mediastinum. This case illustrates that thymic tissue may be found low in the anterior mediastinum and supports the practice of a median sternotomy approach for thorough mediastinal exploration in all cases of thymectomy.

The thymus is routinely encountered on cross-sectional imaging studies of the chest. It has a variable appearance, undergoes dynamic changes during periods of stress, and demonstrates numerous different pathologic lesions. Understanding the imaging characteristics of these different lesions facilitates accurate radiographic diagnosis and can prevent unnecessary follow-up imaging and intervention. This article will review normal thymic anatomy and development, thymic hyperplasia and associated medical conditions, and the imaging and pathologic features of various benign and malignant thymic les

Nuclear receptors are critical regulators of many physiological processes and have been shown to be involved in a variety of disease processes, including malignant neoplasms. Our laboratory is investigating the function of the retinoid-related orphan receptor gamma (RORgamma) and its possible role in disease. Studies of mice deficient in the expression of RORgamma demonstrated that this receptor plays a crucial role in the regulation of thymopoiesis and lymph node organogenesis. In this study, we show that changes in homeostasis in the thymus of RORgamma-/- mice are associated with a high inci

Expression of endogenous retrovirus genes and two different cellular oncogenes (c-onc genes) was examined at the transcriptional level in a variety of normal and lymphoma/leukemia tissues of the domestic cat. The two oncogenes, c-myb(related to avian myeloblastosis virus) and c-myc(related to avian myelocytomatosis virus) were selected for their association with the induction of hematopoietic malignancies, when present in the transforming retroviruses. Tissue-specific expression of endogenous feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-related genes was detected in cellular subpopulations of the cat placenta
