A 61-year-old Caucasian man presented with otalgia, dysarthria, and weight loss. Neurological examination revealed palatal hypomotility, and weakness of the facial and tongue muscles. Magnetic resonance imaging of the head demonstrated the presence of a soft tissue mass in the clivus. Histologic examination of resected tumor disclosed well-differentiated thyroid follicles that invaded the local osseous tissues. Physical examination and radioiodine images of the thyroid gland were normal. The serum thyroglobulin concentration was markedly elevated (1011 ng/mL). A 0.9-cm well-differentiated beni

The association between Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and pediatric thyroid cancer is controversial. Most studies examining this connection have been based on adults, and larger studies in children are lacking. We performed a retrospective study of all sequential pediatric patients who underwent a thyroidectomy for a neoplasm at our institution over a twenty-year period in order to explore the link between HT and pediatric thyroid cancer. A total of 153 patients, median age 16.5 (interquartile range [IQR] 14.2-18.3) years, underwent thyroid surgery for a neoplasm. Patients were mainly female (8

Cutaneous metastases are uncommon in daily practice, although very important, since they may be the first manifestation of an undiscovered primary neoplasm or the first indication of recurrence. Cutaneous metastases from the breast are the most frequent in women and cutaneous metastases from the lung are the most frequent in men. Thyroid carcinoma, despite representing the most frequent endocrine neoplasm, is considered a rare neoplasm, corresponding to 1% of malignant neoplasms diagnosed. Cutaneous metastases from follicular carcinoma are rare and occur mainly in the head and neck area. We re

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of different ultrasound-based methods for assessing growth in low-suspicion thyroid nodules and to determine whether significant nodule growth (SNG) is associated with malignancy or thyroid neoplasm, as well as its implications for follow-up intervals.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, 309 patients with 334 low-suspicion thyroid nodules were analyzed. All nodules underwent at least three ultrasound examinations over ≥1 year and had cytopathologic confirmation. SNG was defined using three criteria: diameter-based criterion (DBC; ≥2

Endrin is carcinogenic for rats, and most likely also for mice and dogs. Endrin caused significant incidences of malignant neoplasms at all sites. In one study, female rats were susceptible to the development of neoplasms of the endocrine organs, particularly carcinomas of the adrenal and pituitary glands as well as neoplasms of the reproductive system. In other studies, female rats tended to have carcinomas of the endocrine system, the mammary gland and reproductive system, and male and female rats lymphomas. Rats developed unusual malignant neoplasms, such as Kupffer cell sarcomas of the liv

BACKGROUND: The appropriate resection for thyroid cancer invading the aerodigestive tract remains controversial.
METHODS: A total of 174 patients underwent resections for aerodigestive tract invasion from differentiated thyroid cancer (103 patients), medullary thyroid cancer (40 patients), and undifferentiated thyroid cancers/unusual thyroid neoplasms (31 patients). In all, 82 patients submitted to transmural resections (window resection, sleeve resection, or cervical evisceration), 65 patients underwent nontransmural resections (shaving or extramucosal esophageal resections), and 27 patients

BACKGROUND: Medullary thyroid carcinoma and pituitary adenoma are neuroendocrine tumors and their coexistence has not been reported in the literature, previously. Medullary thyroid carcinoma is a neoplasm of the thyroid gland arising from parafollicular c-cells producing calcitonin, and pituitary adenoma is a benign hyperplasia of the cells of the pituitary gland. Coexistence of these neoplasms can be explained by being affected by simultaneous primary neoplasms or tumor-to-tumor metastasis phenomenon.

INTRODUCTION: Secondary neoplasms in the thyroid are rare. The study aim was to provide an overview of non-thyroid tumours that metastasize to the thyroid through our institutional experience.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study entailed a review of the pathology database searching for patients with metastasis to the thyroid at the Karolinska University Hospital between 1992 and 2019 and review of their medical files.
RESULTS: Out of 1939 surgical procedures with a histopathological diagnosis of a thyroid malignancy, 31 cases (1.6%, 65% females) with a diagnosis of metastatic epithelial neopla

Dyshormonogenetic goiter (DG) is a rare genetic disorder of thyroid gland development resulting from deficiencies in enzymes involved in thyroid hormone synthesis. Clinical manifestations include congenital hypothyroidism (CH), thyroid enlargement, and nodule formation. Morphologically, the thyroid gland exhibits histoarchitectural heterogeneity and cellular polymorphism, which can mimic malignant neoplasms and complicate differential diagnosis. Morphological examination revealed pronounced polymorphism of thyroid nodules without signs of malignancy. The pathogenic heterozygous variant was det

A neutered female domestic shorthaired cat was presented for a rapidly growing left cervical mass and a 6-month history of primary hyperthyroidism. Cytological examination of the mass was consistent with a sarcoma. Due to poor clinical response the cat was humanely destroyed and a post-mortem examination was performed. This revealed a markedly enlarged, irregularly shaped left thyroid gland with signs of infiltration of the trachea. The contralateral (right) thyroid was also moderately enlarged and irregularly shaped. Histopathological examination of the cervical masses indicated bilateral thy

Thyroid nodules are primarily diagnosed using ultrasound imaging (USI), but its low specificity leads to unnecessary fine-needle aspiration biopsies (FNABs). In particular, USI's limited ability to differentiate follicular neoplasms from benign nodules contributes to suboptimal biopsy decision-making. We propose a dual-modal imaging approach that combines multiparametric photoacoustic imaging (PAI) and USI to support smarter biopsy decisions. In 106 patients with 29 benign nodules, 45 papillary thyroid carcinomas, and 32 follicular neoplasms, three PAI-derived parameters-the photoacoustic spec

BACKGROUND: Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC), follicular thyroid adenoma (FTA), and thyroid nodular hyperplasia (TNH) are the most frequent diseases of the thyroid gland. Previous studies described the involvement of dipeptidyl-peptidase IV (DPPIV/CD26) in the development of thyroid neoplasia and proposed it as an additional tool in the diagnosis/prognosis of these diseases. However, very little is known about the involvement of other peptidases in neoplastic and hyperplastic processes of this gland.
METHODS: The catalytic activity of 10 peptidases in a series of 30 PTC, 10 FTA, and 14 TNH w

The National Toxicology Program data base on 343 mouse and rat carcinogenesis studies was reviewed to determine the frequency of and relationship between hyperplastic and neoplastic follicular lesions of the thyroid gland. The frequency of chemically related lesions in the thyroid was also compared to neoplastic lesions in the liver to investigate a possible correlation. The percentage of studies observed to have positive or equivocal chemically related thyroid proliferative lesions was rats: male, 14%, female, 11%; mice; male, 8%; female, 9%. When positive in one sex for a given chemical, the

68Ga-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET/CT imaging is a relatively new imaging technique used to evaluate the extent of disease in prostate carcinoma. Various other neoplasms may also express PSMA and show uptake on PSMA PET/CT scan. We report a case of a 62-year-old man who had a PSMA PET/CT scan for restaging of prostate carcinoma. A PSMA-avid thyroid lesion was identified, and subsequent tissue sampling confirmed the diagnosis of follicular thyroid adenoma. It is important to be aware of this possibility to avoid scan misinterpretation. Tissue biopsy of PSMA-avid thyroid lesions

In general, most thyroid cancers are indolent and have a slowly progressive course. The exception is anaplastic thyroid cancer. It is one of the most fatal neoplasms in humans, with median survival of 4-12 months. Here, we present a patient with anaplastic thyroid cancer who survived for more than 10 years after diagnosis. A 68-year-old man was incidentally found to have anaplastic thyroid cancer during operation for follicular neoplasm. Total thyroidectomy was performed and hyperfractionated radiotherapy was carried out. After operation, annual follow-up examinations were negative for residua

BACKGROUND: Matrix metalloproteinases-20 (MMP20) expression is widely regarded as tooth specific, with expression limited to dental hard tissues. Recently, we reported MMP20 expression and interaction with dentin sialophosphoprotein (DSPP), a member of the Small Integrin Binding Ligand N-linked Glycoproteins (SIBLINGs), in human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and dysplastic oral premalignant lesions (OPLs), suggesting a role for MMP20-DSPP interaction in oral carcinogenesis.
METHODS: This study aimed to survey the expression of MMP20 and its cognate DSPP partner in the breast, colon, pro

A 12-y-old, 654-kg, Santa Gertrudis cow was presented to the veterinary hospital with acute abdominal distension and a large mass on the left side of the neck. Upon presentation, the patient was bright and alert, with a corticosteroid stress leukogram, hyperglycemia, and mildly increased blood urea nitrogen and creatine kinase activity. A firm, 15 × 10-cm, non-painful left-sided proximal cervical mass and ruminal tympany were appreciable. A fine-needle aspirate of the mass was performed, and cytological findings were consistent with a neuroendocrine neoplasm. Given the large size of the mass a

Thyroid cancer incidence is higher in women than men, especially during the reproductive years, for reasons that remain poorly understood. Using population-based registry data from 4 Nordic countries through 2015, we examined associations of perinatal characteristics with risk of maternal thyroid cancer. Cases were women diagnosed with thyroid cancer ≥2 years after last birth (n = 7,425, 83% papillary). Cases were matched to controls (n = 67,903) by mother's birth year, country, and county of residence. Odds ratios (ORs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression models adjusting for

A lot of contradictory data regarding the serious side effects of incretin-based therapies are currently available, with more being prepared or published every month. Considering the widespread use of these drugs it should be considered a priority to establish both short- and long-term risks connected with incretin treatment. We performed an extensive literature search of the PubMed database looking for articles dealing with connections between incretin-based therapies and pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, thyroid cancer and other neoplasms. Data obtained indicate that GLP-1 agonists and DPPIV
