A Case of Autoimmune Thyroiditis Presenting as Apraxia.

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune thyroiditis, commonly referred to as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, is the leading cause of hypothyroidism in iodine-sufficient regions. Neurologic manifestations are uncommon. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old female with no significant medical history presented with aphasia and episodes of nonsensical speech. Initial workup was unremarkable, and she was discharged. She subsequently returned with recurrent neurologic symptoms, including apraxia and headache. Further evaluation revealed an elevated thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) level and markedly elevated antithyroid per

Puerarin Alleviates Experimental Autoimmune Thyroiditis by Regulating Macrophages.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is the most common organ-specific autoimmune disease, predominantly affecting women. Although the pathogenesis of HT is incompletely understood, some studies have found that macrophage polarization plays a role. Puerarin is a soy isoflavone compound that has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects and regulates macrophage immune activity. This study aimed to verify the therapeutic effect of puerarin on HT and explored its regulatory effect on macrophage polarization imbalance in HT. Through bioinformatics analysis and molecular biology methods, it was found

Ovarian reserve in adolescent girls with autoimmune thyroiditis.

OBJECTIVE: To assess serum anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels as an ovarian reserve marker in adolescent girls with autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) and explore the relationship of this marker with autoimmunity and thyroid function biomarkers. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This study included 96 adolescent girls with newly diagnosed AIT and 96 healthy, age- and sex-matched controls. All participants were evaluated with detailed history taking and physical examination, thyroid ultrasound, and measurement of levels of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxin (FT4), free triiodothyronine (FT3), ant

Generation of a Mouse Spontaneous Autoimmune Thyroiditis Model.

In recent years, Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) has become the most common autoimmune thyroid disease. It is characterized by lymphocyte infiltration and the detection of specific serum autoantibodies. Although the potential mechanism is still not clear, the risk of Hashimoto's thyroiditis is related to genetic and environmental factors. At present, there are several types of models of autoimmune thyroiditis, including experimental autoimmune thyroiditis (EAT) and spontaneous autoimmune thyroiditis (SAT). EAT in mice is a common model for HT, which is immunized with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) comb

COVID-19-induced autoimmune thyroiditis: Exploring molecular mechanisms.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) damages multiple organs, including the thyroid, by direct invasion and cell entry via angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 or indirectly by promoting excessive inflammation in the body. The immune system is a critical factor in antiviral immunity and disease progression. In the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection, the immune system may become overly activated, resulting in a shift from regulatory to effector responses, which may subsequently promote the development and progression of autoimmune diseases. The incidence of autoimmune thyroid di

MIG in autoimmune thyroiditis: review of the literature.

The monokine induced by interferon (IFN)-γ (MIG) and its receptor, the chemokine (C-X-C motif) receptor (CXCR)3, appear to contribute to the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis (AT). MIG is secreted by thyrocytes under the influence of IFN-γ. In tissue, recruited Th1 lymphocytes may be responsible for enhanced IFN-γ, which in turn stimulates MIG secretion from thyrocytes creating an amplification feedback loop, and perpetuating the autoimmune process. Circulating MIG and IFN-inducible T-cell α chemoattractant (I-TAC) levels are increased in patients with thyroiditis and hypothyroidism and a

Hashimoto Encephalopathy as a Complication of Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

OBJECTIVE: To present a case of Hashimoto encephalopathy as a complication of autoimmune thyroiditis. CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: A previously healthy 56-year-old female presented with rapidly progressive cognitive decline and visual hallucinations. Being a diagnosis of exclusion, Hashimoto encephalopathy required an extensive laboratory and diagnostic workup, which was done over the course of a 15-day hospitalization. The patient recovered after initial treatment with intravenous methylprednisolone and was then switched to prednisone p.o. CONCLUSION: This case report illustrates

Autoimmune Diabetes and Thyroiditis Complicating Treatment with Nivolumab.

Programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) ligand inhibitors have gained popularity in the treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. The immune system is regulated by stimulatory and inhibitory signaling and aims to achieve the balance between activation and inhibition. Treatment with immune checkpoint inhibitors enhances immune response, but is also known to diminish immune tolerance and increase autoimmune toxicity. Here we present a case of a patient with advanced squamous cell lung cancer who developed type I diabetes and thyroiditis after treatment with PD-1 checkpoint inhibitor nivolumab. Th

Immunological Characteristics of Children with Hashimoto's Autoimmune Thyroiditis.

The main cause of autoimmune thyroiditis of Hashimoto's type (HT) is a pathological immune response to thyroid antigens. The aim of the study was to present clinical characteristics and immune profile of children with HT. Ninety five children were examined: 45 with HT (age: 8-18 years) and 50 healthy age-matched controls. The peripheral blood mononuclear cells' (PBMC) phenotype was evaluated using a Beckman Coulter flow cytometer with the following monoclonal antibodies: CD4-FITC, CD28-PC5, CD152-PE and CD8-FITC, CD28-PC5, CD152-PE. The thyroid stimulating hormone, thyroid hormones, and antibo

The genetics of autoimmune thyroiditis: the first decade.

Most of our current understanding of the genetic predisposition to autoimmune disease can be traced to experiments performed in the decade from 1971 to 1981. Chella David was a key contributor to this research. Many of these early steps came from studies of experimental autoimmune thyroiditis. This model has been especially valuable because essentially the same disease can occur spontaneously in selected strains of animals or can be induced by deliberate immunization. From a genetic point of view, the disease has been investigated in three different species: mice, rats and chickens. The same a
