Background: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is an organ-specific disease that various drugs, including COVID-19 vaccines, can trigger. COVID-19 infection has been associated with thyroid gland damage and disease SARS-CoV-2 direct action, euthyroid sick syndrome, and immune-mediated mechanisms are all potential mechanisms of thyroid damage. It denotes thyroid gland inflammation, most commonly of viral origin, and belongs to the transitory, self-limiting thyroid gland diseases group, causing complications in approximately 15% of patients in the form of permanent hypothyroidism. Some authors say SAT i

SUMMARY: A 40-year-old Japanese woman presented to the outpatient clinic with fever and palpitations 2 days after receiving the influenza vaccine (Influenza HA Vaccine 'KMB'®) following the second dose of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine (COVID-19 vaccine Moderna intramuscular injection®). At the first visit, the patient presented with a swollen thyroid gland with mild tenderness, and she was diagnosed with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) based on the presence of thyrotoxicosis (free T3: 5.42 pg/mL; free T4: 2.34 ng/dL; and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH): <0.01 μIU/mL), a high C-react

BACKGROUND: Subacute thyroiditis is a clinical condition usually seen 1-2 weeks after a viral infection in the upper respiratory tract, and has also been reported following infection with COVID-19. Cases of subacute thyroiditis following a seasonal influenza vaccination have been described, and recent case reports have reported clinical symptoms and signs typical of subacute thyroiditis following vaccination with mRNA SARS-CoV-2 vaccine.
CASE PRESENTATION: A young, healthy female underwent surgery with left-side lobectomy for papillary thyroid carcinoma. Hashimoto's thyroiditis was revealed a

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is the most common self-limiting thyroid disease causing pain. The etiology of the disease remains unknown, but it is usually related to viral infection or allergic reaction after viral infection. SAT after vaccination is extremely rare. The patient had a fever of no clearly defined cause about 8 hours after receiving the first dose of a 0.5 mL 9-valent human papillomavirus vaccine (Gardasil 9). The highest temperature was 37.8 ℃, accompanied by a pain in the neck, fatigue and the increasing pain when swallowing. After the patient was admitted to the hospital, physic

Background: Since 1977 the susceptibility to SAT has been known to be HLA-B*35-related in ~70% of patients. Recently it has been demonstrated that SAT is associated with the presence of HLA-B*18:01 and DRB1*01, as well as with HLA-C*04:01. The association between the type of genetic SAT background and sonographic pattern of the disease has never been analyzed. The aim of the study was to evaluate the potential correlation between the presence of individual HLA haplotypes and the sonographic SAT pattern, and to provide the US characteristics of the analyzed SAT cases. Methods: HLA-A, -B, -C, -D

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the sonographic characteristics and interval changes of subacute thyroiditis using follow-up sonography.
METHODS: From January 2008 to December 2014, 85 patients with clinically suspected subacute thyroiditis underwent sonographic examinations by a single radiologist. Subacute thyroiditis was confirmed on the basis of the clinical, sonographic, and cytohistopathologic findings. On the initial and follow-up sonograms, the individual sonographic findings and interval changes were retrospectively investigated by the same radiologist. According to the sonogr

Drug-induced hypersensitivity syndrome (DIHS) is a severe multiorgan system adverse drug reaction with reactivation of human herpesviruses (HHVs) such as HHV-6, HHV-7, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus. Various complications, including autoimmune diseases, sometimes appear during the course of DIHS. We report a case of salazosulfapyridine-induced DIHS associated with HHV-6 reactivation. Two and a half months after the onset of DIHS, subacute thyroiditis occurred, possibly associated with CMV reactivation. Prednisolone (20 mg/day) was effective for subacute thyroiditis. Long-term fol

Few studies have been reported from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (SA) to describe the clinical presentation and long term outcomes of subacute thyroiditis (SAT). Our aim was to review the demographic, anthropometric, clinical presentation, laboratory results, treatment, and disease outcome in Riyadh region and to compare those with results from different regions of the Kingdom and different parts of the world. We reviewed the medical files of patients who underwent thyroid uptake scan during an 8-year period in King Khalid University Hospital. Only 25 patients had confirmed diagnosis of thyroid

Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) association with thyroid carcinoma has been rarely reported in the literature. We present a patient with SAT and papillary thyroid cancer that was suspected by ultrasonographic evaluation (US) following SAT treatment. A fifty-four-year old female patient referred to our department due to tachycardia, jitteriness and pain in cervical region for the past one month. SAT diagnosis was established by physical examination, laboratory and ultrasonographic findings. After treatment, control thyroid US revealed regression of the hypoechogenic regions seen in both lobes, and a

AIM: De Quervain's subacute nonsuppurative thyroiditis has been well characterised clinically: there usually is pain in the region of the thyroid due to local pressure. Typically, the patient feels generally ill with fever. Signs of inflammation (raised ESR and CRP) are measurable laboratory parameters. Occasionally, there is transient hyperthyroidism followed by hypothyroidism. Little data is available on the vascularisation of the thyroid in this clinical entity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-one patients with confirmed De Quervain's subacute thyroiditis were investigated and the findings we

Brucellosis is a systemic infectious disease, and multi-organ involvement is commonly seen. However, thyroid gland involment is a rare complication of brucellosis. In this report, a 34 years old male patient who had been followed up with the complaints of malaise, pain in front of the neck, throat pain, joint pains and fever, was presented. This case was diagnosed as brucella subacute thyroiditis by serological and histological findings. The patient was succesfully treated with rifampicin (300 mgr/day) plus doxycycline (200 mgr/day) therapy for eight weeks. The aim of this presentation was to

We studied the utility of color Doppler ultrasonography in patients with subacute thyroiditis. Eighteen patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) with painful goiter and thyrotoxicosis underwent color Doppler ultrasonography during the acute and recovery stages of the disease. Thyroid vascularization in these patients was compared with that of 15 untreated patients with Graves' disease and 17 control subjects. During the acute stage of subacute thyroiditis, color Doppler ultrasonography showed low echogenicity without increased tissue vascularity in the affected swollen thyroid. In the recovery

We report the case of a 60-year-old man who presented with fever, weight loss, generalized aching, left temporal and ear pain, and an erythrocyte sedimentation rate of 125 mm/hour. Due to the presumed diagnosis of giant cell arteritis (GCA), the patient was treated with prednisone (60 mg daily), with immediate improvement in his symptoms. Biopsy of the temporal arteries revealed no significant inflammatory infiltrate. Further evaluation included assessments of thyroid function, which revealed an elevated T4 level, low thyroid-stimulating hormone level, and suppressed radioactive iodine uptake

We have recently reported that red blood cell (RBC) zinc (Zn) in patients with hyperthyroidism reflects a patient's integrated thyroid hormone level over the previous few months. In the present paper RBC Zn concentrations were measured in 10 patients with subacute thyroiditis whose total plasma T4 and T3 levels were elevated. The values were compared with those obtained in 10 patients with untreated Graves' disease, whose plasma T4 concentrations were elevated to the same level as in the former group. The RBC Zn concentration was normal in 9 of 10 patients with subacute thyroiditis, but was de

We studied 2 men with a subacute thyroiditis-like syndrome (STLS) associated with systemic amyloidosis. Both had very tender, diffuse, firm goiters, low thyroidal radioactive iodine uptake values, and increased erythrocyte sedimentation rates. Glucocorticoid therapy resulted in dramatic improvement. Compared to 18 patients with subacute thyroiditis, these 2 men had 1) persistence of goiter even in remission, 2) repeated exacerbation of STLS, 3) pain always localized in the same site, and 4) gastrointestinal, renal, and cardiac abnormalities. Histological examination of the patients' thyroid gl
