Unfed adults and nymphs of the bont tick Amblyomma hebraeum Koch are attracted to hosts on which fed males, emitting an aggregation-attachment pheromone (AAP), are attached. Pheromone/acaricide mixtures have the potential to selectively attract and kill these ticks. A topical formulation of amitraz (Mitaban Liquid Concentrate, The Upjohn Company, Kalamazoo, Michigan, U.S.A.) was evaluated as a tick repellent and detachment agent, and flea repellent. A liquid concentrate formulation of amitraz (Mitaban: Upjohn) was used to topically treat 181 dogs with scabies, at an active drug level of 250 ppm, or 10.6 ml of concentrate in 2 gal water. Fifty hospitalized infants and small children in the age-group of 3 months to 2 years admitted with scabies were treated with 5 applications of either 10% crotamiton cream or lotion on consecutive days. Among patients with primary syphilis, sensitivity of the toluidine red unheated serum test was 55% (6/11) compared with darkfield microscopy and 60% (9/15) compared with Treponema pallidum polymerase chain reaction. Sensitivity of rapid plasma reagin was 78% (38/49) and 93% (43/46), respectively. Thirty-four otosclerotic stapes of active type were investigated histologically with hematoxylin-eosin (H-E), periodic acid-Schiff-alcine blue (PAS-AB), and/or toluidine blue stain. The results show that chondrification plays an important role in the development of otosclerosis. To date, this specific histopathologic change has not been well recognized. Based on the findings of this study, it is suggested that the active type of otosclerosis be subdivided into two phases, the osteolytic phase and spongy chondroid phase.

A 46-year-old man with an erythematous, tender, swollen patch on the dorsum of his left fourth toe visited us. The biopsied tissue showed a proliferation of normally structured eccrine glands and ducts surrounded with abundant materials confirmed as mucin by toluidine blue stain. Mucinous eccrine nevus is an extremely rare entity, and only two cases have been reported in the literature. We describe a case of mucinous eccrine nevus which was late in onset and presented as a swollen patch.

P. carinii infection in red-bellied tamarins (Saguinus labiatus), born and maintained in a laboratory breeding colony, was examined by histopathologic examination postmortem. P. carinii cysts were detected in 6 of 10 red-bellied tamarins examined, by using Grocott's, toluidine blue O and immunostaining with avidin-biotin complex using antisera for rat-, simian-, and human-P. carinii. The results obtained from the present studies imply that P. carinii may be an important pathogen in this species.
