PURPOSE: In this study, we propose a method to grade corneal stromal opacity using optical density measurements by anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) and validate the approach in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of human corneal OCT scans was performed on 48 eyes of 32 patients with FECD and 33 control eyes of 21 patients using the Carl Zeiss Cirrus HD-OCT 5000. In addition, corneal edema in fresh rabbit cadaver eyes was artificially induced by distilled water and imaged with the Thorlabs TELESTO-II spectral domain OCT at differ

PURPOSE: To determine whether the optic disc experiences cupping after an episode of optic neuritis as assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT).
METHODS: A total of 50 patients with unilateral optic neuritis and 50 age- and sex-matched controls were studied. A complete examination, including visual acuity (VA), visual fields, and OCT scanning of the optic nerve head was performed. Mean cup-to-disc (C/D) ratios in the affected eyes were compared with fellow and control eyes.
RESULTS: Mean C/D area ratio (CDAR), C/D vertical ratio (CDVR), and C/D horizontal ratio (CDHR) were significantl

Assessing nerve integrity and myelination after injury is necessary to provide insight for treatment strategies aimed at restoring neuromuscular function. Currently, this is largely done with electrical analysis, which lacks direct quantitative information. In vivo optical imaging with sufficient imaging depth and resolution could be used to assess the nerve microarchitecture. In this study, we examine the use of polarization sensitive-optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) to quantitatively assess the sciatic nerve microenvironment through measurements of birefringence after applying a nerve c

Optoretinography (ORG) is the optical measurement of changes in the retina in response to light stimulation. Adaptive optics optical coherence tomography (AOOCT) records photoreceptor ORGs by measuring the physical changes in their outer segment lengths in response to light stimulation. The main difficulty in recording these nanometer-scale changes is constant eye motion. Typically, fast volume acquisitions are used with offline spatial registration to compensate for the effect of eye motion. Here, we present an alternate solution whereby an adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO

We present a scheme for correction of x-y-separable aberrations in optical coherence tomography (OCT) designed to work with phase unstable systems with no hardware modifications. Our approach, termed SHARP, is based on computational adaptive optics and numerical phase correction and follows from the fact that local phase stability is sufficient for the deconvolution of optical aberrations. We demonstrate its applicability in a raster-scan polygon-laser OCT system with strong phase-jitter noise, achieving successful refocusing at depths up to 4 times the Rayleigh range. We also present in vivo

BACKGROUND: Optic disc melanocytoma (ODMC) was a benign pigmented intraocular tumor with the rare potential malignant transformation. This study was designed to evaluate tumor vasculature with optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) in ODMC.
METHODS: Eyes of healthy individuals in a control group and of patients with ODMC were imaged by OCTA systems operating at 840 nm wavelengths and examined. The main outcome measures were OCTA images, qualitative evaluation of optic disc and tumor vasculature, quantitative vascular density (VD) and perfusion density (PD).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a noninvasive imaging tool routinely used in ophthalmology that provides cross-sectional images of the retina. Compression of the anterior visual pathways results in progressive thinning of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and macular ganglion cell complex (GCC) and this review will highlight the utility of OCT in evaluating patients with this condition.
RECENT FINDINGS: The RNFL and macular GCC have been found to highly correlate with visual function in patients with compressive optic neuropathies. Preoperative RNFL and macular GCC

PURPOSE: To study the optical coherence tomography characteristics of optic pit maculopathy and propose the anatomical pathophysiology of fluid conduit from pit to macula.
METHODS: The charts of 32 patients (32 eyes) with the diagnosis of optic pit maculopathy were reviewed. Clinical variables that were studied included duration of visual impairment, initial visual acuity, and associated fundus features. Optical coherence tomography characteristics including communication with pit, layer of retina involved in schisis, and presence of subretinal fluid were noted.
RESULTS: The mean age of the

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new noninvasive high-resolution method that measures the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness. An overview of the use in optic neuritis (ON) and multiple sclerosis (MS) is presented. Literature survey of PubMed was carried out. RNFL thickness in eyes of healthy control subjects was 102.9-111.11 microm, in eyes affected by ON 59.79-85 microm, and in fellow eyes 82.73-99.8 microm. All studies found a significant reduction in RNFL in eyes affected by ON compared with fellow eyes and eyes of healthy controls. Two out of three studies found a significan

We report on the first clinical study based on optical coherence tomography (OCT) in combination with multiphoton tomography (MPT) and dermoscopy. 47 patients with a variety of skin diseases and disorders such as skin cancer, psoriasis, hemangioma, connective tissue diseases, pigmented lesions, and autoimmune bullous skin diseases have been investigated with (i) state-of-the-art OCT systems for dermatology including multibeam swept source OCT, (ii) the femtosecond laser multiphoton tomograph, and (iii) dermoscopes. Dermoscopy provides two-dimensional color images of the skin surface. OCT image

PURPOSE: To determine the sensitivity of manufacturer supported normative algorithms in Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT) and Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT) in detecting advanced primary open angle glaucoma.
METHODS: A total of 157 subjects with advanced primary open angle glaucoma were recruited. The eye with the more severe glaucoma, as judged by mean deviation on Humphrey visual field, was imaged. The total number of optic disc sectors classified as being outside normal limits on Moorfields Regression Analysis (MRA) from the HRT II and HRT 3 software or from the sector and qu

PURPOSE: To compare the central corneal thickness (CCT) measurements in subjects with corneal edema using ultrasound pachymetry, Visante anterior-segment optical coherence tomography (OCT), Cirrus OCT, and Pentacam Scheimpflug camera tomography.
METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study included 46 eyes of 33 patients with corneal edema and a CCT exceeding 550 μm evaluated by ultrasound pachymetry, Visante OCT, Cirrus OCT, and Pentacam. Two observers measured each eye twice. Intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility were determined and agreement among the devices calculated.

Defocus aberration in optical systems, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) systems employing Gaussian illumination, gives rise to the well-known compromise between transverse resolution and depth-of-field. This results in blurry images when out-of-focus, whilst other low-order aberrations (e.g., astigmatism, coma, etc.) present in both the OCT system and biological samples further reduce image resolution and contrast. Computational adaptive optics (CAO) is a computed optical interferometric imaging technique that modifies the phase of the OCT data in the spatial frequency domain to co
