TRIAL DESIGN: This long-term 14-year-randomized split-mouth study aimed at evaluating (1) the outcomes of two different methods of root surface modifications (root surface polishing versus root planing) used in combination with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) and (2) the long-term results of CAF performed for the treatment of single gingival recessions.
METHODS: Ten patients with similar bilateral recessions ≥2 mm were selected for a split-mouth randomized design study. Exposed root surfaces were assigned to receive polishing (test sites) or root planing (control sites). A multilevel model wa

UNLABELLED: Periodontal recessions can cause aesthetic and functional problems, especially in the anterior region or when combined with exposed crown margins. A combination of periodontal disease, recession with exposed root surface, hard-tissue defects and age emphasizes the need for treating these defects. If crown margins are exposed and surgical treatment is not possible, aesthetics and function can only be improved by replacement of the restoration. The restorative treatment option with a gingiva-shaded composite is especially valuable for dental fear patients or older patients with gener

Horizontal root fractures are uncommon, mainly occurring on the cervical and middle third of the root of permanent upper incisors. The diagnosis is essentially radiographic and requires different healing patterns, depending on some pre- and postinjury factors. The aim of this article was to report the clinical management and different healing types in three cases of horizontal root fractures on permanent dentition. In case 1, the pulp tissue was vital and no treatment was necessary. In case 2, a root canal treatment of the cervical fragment was necessary and in case 3, pulpal necrosis was veri

Life cycles of dental trauma victims can provide important clinical information, especially when viewed over many years. In this first series of life cycles, the pulp and periodontal responses to traumatic injuries of four patients are documented over periods varying from 26 to 51 years. The dynamics of pulp survival following an intrusive luxation and two avulsions are followed, with particular reference to pulp canal calcification to which a new term, root canal stenosis, has been proposed. The life cycles include the successful management of inflammatory root resorption in a replanted tooth

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontic tooth movement can lead to the creation of bone. The purposes of the study were to investigate the amount of bone formed in orthodontic patients during treatment (maxillary canine distalization) and retention and to assess the long-term stability of the new bone.
METHODS: The sample consisted of 80 patients with 128 missing lateral incisors who were treated with distalization of the maxillary canines. They were examined at the beginning of orthodontic treatment (T1), at the end of treatment (T2), 2 years after treatment (T3A), and 5 years after treatment (T3B). The i

UNLABELLED: Tooth movement results from alveolar bone resorption/deposition following application of orthodontic forces, and root resorption can be an undesirable complication associated with this process. No treatment for external root resorption is available to date.
OBJECTIVE: To determine if COX-2 inhibitors like Celebrex are effective in protecting root resorption associated with orthodontic forces.
METHODS: A force of 80 grams was applied to the left maxillary first molars of 7-week-old female Wistar rats using nickel titanium closed coil springs attached to the cervical area of the in

Tooth surface loss can present in a variety of ways, some of which can appear rather strange on first examination. This case report demonstrates an unusual presentation of tooth surface loss (TSL) and its subsequent treatment. This loss of hard dental tissue appeared to be affecting the whole of the patient's remaining dentition, both lingually and buccally. Detailed questioning revealed the origins of this problem which turned out to be due to excessive use of an intra-oral Miswak chewing stick. Cinical Relevance: This article will enable clinicians to understand the importance of specific, t

BACKGROUND: An assessment of the factors affecting the clinical outcome of root coverage procedures may be useful in clinical decision making. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the post-surgical location of gingival margin relative to the cemento-enamel junction (CEJ) can influence the recession reduction (RecRed) and complete root coverage (CRC) following coronally advanced flap procedure (CAF).
METHODS: Sixty patients, aged between 22 and 57 years, 15 males and 45 females, each showing maxillary buccal recessions (> or =2 mm) identified as Miller's Class I were consecutively e

The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in labial plate thickness in patients identified as having thin versus thick/average periodontal biotypes. The association between biotype and labial plate thickness was evaluated by correlating information obtained from cone beam computed tomographs, diagnostic impressions, and clinical examinations of the maxillary anterior teeth (canine to canine) in 60 patients. Compared to a thick/average biotype, a thin biotype was associated with thinner labial plate thickness (P < .001), narrower keratinized tissue width (P < .001), greater

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis is primarily a bacteria-induced disease that can be modified by tooth-related local factors. Cervical enamel projections (CEPs) are a common tooth anomaly that can act as contributing factors in the development of periodontitis. They are most commonly found at the buccal surfaces of mandibular molars.
METHODS: A 57-year-old female was referred to our clinic for treatment of chronic periodontitis. A clinical examination revealed moderate attachment loss that was localized to the palatal side of the maxillary second molars. The rest of the dentition was less affected,

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession is significantly more common among smokers, while the relative outcome of various root coverage procedures in smokers, compared to non-smokers, is debatable. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of cigarette smoking on the outcome of coronally positioned flap (CPF) in the treatment of Miller Class I gingival recession defects.
METHODS: Ten current smokers (> or = 10 cigarettes daily for at least 5 years) and 10 non-smokers (never smokers), each with one 2- to 3-mm Miller Class I recession defect in an upper canine or bicuspid, were treated w

Monocortical screws are increasingly being used to enhance orthodontic anchorage. The most frequently cited clinical complication is soft tissue irritation. It is thus clinically advantageous for these miniscrews to be placed in attached mucosa. The purpose of this study was to (1) determine radiographically the most coronal interradicular sites for placement of miniscrews in orthodontic patients and (2) determine if orthodontic alignment increases the number of sites with adequate interradicular bone for placement of these screws. Sixty panoramic radiographs (n = 30 pretreatment, n = 30 postt
