Association of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease With Dental Erosion.

Gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD) or chronic acid reflux disorder is a condition in which acid-containing contents continuously leak from the stomach and return to the esophagus. Acid reflux disease occurs in nearly every person at some unspecified time. In reality, it is considered as a reoccurrence of acid reflux disease disorder and heartburn, every day. However, when you have acid reflux disorder/heartburn greater than two times every week over numerous weeks, constantly take heartburn medicinal tablets and antacids. However, if your signs and symptoms and symptoms keep returning, yo

Parotid salivary parameters in bulimic patients - a controlled clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with purging-type bulimia and/or non-bulimic patients, treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitor SI-5-HT (fluoxetine), have dental erosion and changes in selected buffer components of parotid saliva (bicarbonates, phosphates, urea), compared with the healthy population. METHODS: A controlled clinical trial was designed for three, age-matched, female groups of 94 patients: 1) bulimic patients treated with fluoxetine 40 mg/day (n = 25), 2) non-bulimic patients diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder, treated with fluoxetine 2

A Comparative Evaluation of the Erosion Level of Commonly Prescribed Pediatric Liquid Medicines on Primary Teeth: An In-Vitro Surface Profilometry and Scanning Electron Microscopic Study.

Introduction Maintaining good oral health is crucial for the overall health, growth, and development of children. Dental caries is the most widespread oral disease and the most common infectious condition affecting the mouth. Epidemiological studies have shown a frequent occurrence of enamel erosion in young people. Pediatric liquid analgesics (PLAs) are frequently prescribed and well-accepted by young patients. However, prolonged use of these medications can increase the risk of dental caries and dental erosion. This study aims to evaluate the erosive potential of commonly prescribed pediatri

C1 Silencing Attenuates Inflammation and Alveolar Bone Resorption in Endodontic Disease.

INTRODUCTION: Endodontic disease, 1 of the most prevalent chronic infectious diseases worldwide, occurs when the dental pulp becomes infected and inflamed, leading to bone destruction around the tooth root, severe pain, and tooth loss. Although many studies have tried to develop therapies to alleviate the bone erosion and inflammation associated with endodontic disease, there is an urgent need for an effective treatment. METHODS: In this study, we used a gene-based therapy approach by administering recombinant adeno-associated virus (AAV)-mediated Atp6v1c1 knockdown to target both periapical

Dental white spots associated with bulimia nervosa in orthodontic patients.

Bulimia nervosa is an eating disorder characterized by consuming a large amount of food in a short amount of time followed by an attempt to rid oneself of the food consumed (purging), typically by vomiting, taking a laxative, diuretic, or stimulant, and/or excessive exercise, because of an extensive concern for body weight. The frequent contact between teeth and gastric acid, in particular, may cause: severe dental erosion, perimolysis, or the erosion of tooth enamel and swollen salivary glands. Constant vomiting can lead to gastroesophageal reflux. The aim of this article is to report two cas

Conservative restoration of function and aesthetics in a bulimic patient: a case report.

Traditionally, the treatment of acid erosion lesions of the maxillary and mandibular dentition has been invasive, often utilizing full-coverage crown restorations. Intentional endodontic and post-and-core treatments have been used in the past to gain crown length for retention of cemented cast restorations. The learning objective of this article is to discuss the primary cause of acid erosion-bulimia nervosa-and present an alternative dental treatment modality. The alternative treatment uses conservative tooth preparation, dentin bonding technology, and pressed ceramic restorations, achieving

An anti-c-Fms antibody inhibits orthodontic tooth movement.

Orthodontic force induces osteoclastogenesis in vivo. It has recently been reported that administration of an antibody against the macrophage-colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF) receptor c-Fms blocks osteoclastogenesis and bone erosion induced by tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) administration. This study aimed to examine the effect of an anti-c-Fms antibody on mechanical loading-induced osteoclastogenesis and osteolysis in an orthodontic tooth movement model in mice. Using TNF receptor 1- and 2-deficient mice, we showed that orthodontic tooth movement was mediated by TNF-alpha. We inject

Management of sensitive dentin.

No panacea presently exists for dentinal sensitivity. Careful, systematic diagnosis and selection of treatment based on diagnostic findings provide a solution to most cases. Often in fact, cases require no treatment because spontaneous closure of dentinal tubules usually provides relief within several weeks. Simple dentinal sensitivity responds immediately to tubule closure induced by application of oxalates, creation of a smear layer, application of adhesives, and other local methods. Patients with sensitivity who do not respond may have pulpitis, a cracked tooth, or defective restorations in

Associated factors to cervical dentin hypersensitivity in adults: a transversal study.

BACKGROUND: This cross-sectional study aimed to identify the factors associated to the cervical dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in Brazilian adult population. METHODS: Three hundred and eighty patients (67.2% women and 32.8% men) were assessed by questionnaire and thermal test with ice. Participants marked in a visual analogue scale (VAS) the intensity of pain, and a calibrated examiner (ICC 0.990) measured the scores using a caliper. Pain scores above 0.5 mm were considered sensitive teeth. The DH associated factors were investigated by clinical examination. The association between variables wa

Dental and oropharyngeal lesions in rats with chronic acid reflux esophagitis.

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we evaluated pathological changes in the tooth and pharynx of GERD rats to elucidate the association between gastric acid reflux and oral and pharyngeal diseases. METHODS: An experimental rat model of chronic acid reflux esophagitis was surgically created. The oral cavities were observed histologically every 2 weeks until 20 weeks after surgery. RESULTS: At 10 weeks after surgery, molar crown heights in GERD rats were shorter than that in control rats, and inflammatory cell infiltration by gastric acid reflux was found in the periodontal mucosa of GERD rats. Further

Dental erosion in industry.

Five hundred and fifty-five acid workers were examined between March 1962 and October 1964. One hundred and seventy-six (31·7%) were affected by industrial dental erosion at the first examinations. In 33 cases (6·0%) the dentine was affected. During the period of the survey, 66 (20·4%) of 324 workers examined more than once showed evidence that erosion was progressing. The prevalence and incidence of erosion were highest among battery formation workers, lower among picklers, and least among other processes covered by the survey. The age of workers did not appear to influence their susceptibili

Synergistic effects of bioactive silica and fluoride in enamel protection and repair: an in vitro study.

Erosive tooth wear (ETW) compromises enamel integrity. This study investigated the synergistic effects of bioactive silica and fluoride, as well as the independent performance of bioactive silica, in protecting sound enamel and repairing previously eroded enamel under erosive-abrasive challenges. An in vitro laboratory design was adopted using two models: (1) a protective model with sound enamel and (2) a remineralizing model with pre-eroded enamel. Ninety-six bovine enamel blocks were randomly allocated to four dentifrice groups (n=12/group) within two experimental models: RGS/NaF (bioactive

Comparative impact of manual and electric toothbrushing on acid-eroded enamel.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the enamel wear resulting from manual and electric toothbrushing following acid erosion, using natural human enamel specimens. The study aimed to quantify both surface tissue loss and subsurface prism alterations. METHODS: Twenty-four caries-free extracted human molars were decoronated and sectioned to expose natural buccal enamel surfaces. Samples were divided into two groups (manual vs electric) and subjected to four cycles of citric acid erosion (pH 2.7) followed by controlled brushing (30 strokes per cycle, total 120) using a non-fluoridated toothpaste s
