Enamel epithelium expresses bone sialoprotein (BSP).

Bone sialoprotein (BSP) is a major non-collagenous extracellular matrix protein in bone and other mineralized connective tissues. BSP is syn … er, no hybridization signals were observed at an earlier developmental stage when bell-shaped molar tooth germs were being formed. Immunohistochemical analysis of tooth tissues from transgenic mice harboring a 2.7 kb rat BSP promoter ligated to a luciferase reporter gene revealed strong staining for luciferase in the enamel epithelium of the developing tooth …

Remodelling processes following transplantation of dental germs in dogs.

Dental germs with different amounts of root development were transplanted from the left side to the right side, and vice versa, in young beagle dogs. The unerupted premolars had been taken out by osteotomy. After transplantation, the dental germs were covered with mucosa. The observation period lasted 7 postoperative weeks. Histological examination of the remodelling processes of the bone and tooth-tissue was carried out by polychromatic sequential labelling. All the transplanted dental germs remained vital, and the eruption continued to the normal occlusion level. From this, it follows that e

The cytology of the dental follicle and adjacent alveolar bone during tooth eruption in the dog.

Previous studies from our laboratories have shown that premolar eruption in dogs depends upon the presence of the dental follicle and is independent of root or crown growth or attachment to the oral epithelium. The present study is an analysis of the cellular composition of the dental follicle and the cellular investment of the adjacent walls of the bony crypt before and during eruption of the third and fourth mandibular permanent premolars in young beagle dogs. Four premolar follicles and their adjacent bony crypts were examined at 2-week intervals over 12 weeks before and during eruption of

[Extremely delayed mineralisation of a first premolar in conjunction with submerged deciduous molars--a case report].

This case report presents a patient with extremely delayed mineralisation of a first upper right premolar and simultaneously congenitally missing second premolars. While the germs of the first premolars are usually detectable on dental X-ray films at the age of three or four years, the demonstrated patient was older than 13 years when the first premolar became visible. As the right first bicuspid actively erupted normal root growth took place, and once the tooth is in its normal position its anatomy can be considered normal. With the eruption of the permanent tooth the periodontal situation im

[Tooth transplantation].

In the light of the thesis of J. Thibault, the authors suggest, in association with transplantation of wisdom tooth buds into the alveolus of the first molar, a technique consisting of placing the graft in its pre-eruptive position, removing in a block the bud, the gubernaculum and the sub-jacent gingival mucosa. Under these conditions, eruption occurs at the same time as development of the roots, which represents the most physiological solution. At the same time as formation of the root, the authors noted a paradoxal rhizalysis, hypercementosis resulting in ankylosis and conservation of vital

Bilateral lower second molar impaction in teenagers: an emergent problem?

The frequency of simultaneously impacted second and third molars in teenagers is increasing and becoming a common occurrence in adolescent oral surgery practice. The traditional treatment is the removal of the third molar by conventional access but repositioning of the surgical flap to the distal face of the first molar can predispose to complications such as pericoronitis and delayed healing of the attached gingiva. We present a case in which we use the germectomy approach to remove the impacted third molar for the eruption of the second molar through a vestibular incision. This incision offe

Inverted impaction of second premolar: two case reports.

This report documents two patients with inversion and impaction of the second premolar tooth. Family and personal histories of both patients were unremarkable with no abnormalities in general growth and development nor any history of trauma. Patient 1 was a 10-year-old female with inversion and impaction of the mandibular right second premolar. Fifteen months previously, pre-operative radiographic examination prior to extraction of the mandibular right second primary molar revealed a normal direction and eruptive pattern of the tooth in question. However, following extraction of the mandibular

[Furcation lesions in deciduous teeth].

The area of furcation of temporary molars constitutes a zone of exchanges and rearrangements relating to the evolution of the sub-adjacent permanent tooth. It is subjected to the eruption of the latter and to the physiological modifications of the temporary tooth. Moreover, this area is the site of above-mentioned inflammatory or infections conditions, maintained or aggravated by anatomical factors (accessory canals, thin pulpar floor, with little calcified dentine and broad tubuli), physiological factors (multiplication of accessory canals, decrease in the floor and migration of the epithelia

Dentistry and molecular biology: a promising field for tooth agenesis management.

Tooth agenesis is the failure of tooth bud development, causing definitive absence of the tooth. It is the most common dental anomaly, affecting up to one-quarter of the general population. The main cause is related to abnormal function of specific genes which play key roles during odontogenesis, particularly MSX1 and PAX9. MSX1 is a transcription factor highly expressed in the mesenchyme of developing tooth germs, whereas PAX9 is a transcription factor that shows a direct relationship with craniofacial development, particularly the formation of the palate and teeth. Despite the high frequency…

Etiologic aspects and orthodontic treatment of unilateral localized arrested tooth-development combined with hearing loss.

In this study a case has been presented involving localized, arrested maxillary tooth development, asymmetric maxillary development, and unilateral loss of hearing. No similar case seems to have been described before. The orthodontic treatment comprised extraction of four permanent tooth germs in the maxilla and autotransplantation of mandibular teeth, followed by the use of fixed orthodontic appliances and a one-unit bridge restoration. Etiologic aspects are discussed. It is suggested that a severe attack of mumps that involved massive swelling of the parotid glands immediately after chicken …

[Extensive unilateral osteosclerosis in the mandible of a child].

An orthodontic examination of an eight-year-old female patient revealed osteosclerosis with displaced tooth germs in the left mandible as an incidental finding. The patient has no known underlying diseases. Extraorally, there is normal skin colour without asymmetry with intact sensitivity and motor function. Intraorally, there is an age-appropriate mixed dentition with a discreetly distended mandible on the left.

[The advantages and limits of the use of desmopressin (Minirin) in stomatology. Apropos 2 young female patients presenting with von Willebrand's disease].

The authors describe two cases of wisdom tooth germ removal in female adolescents presenting with von Willebrand's disease. The effect of the Minirin injection was studied during a preoperative test and allowed carrying out the operation with normalized hemostasis, without using substitution factors and with no postoperative complications. The authors specify the indications and limitations of the use of desmopressin before surgery.

A Dentigerous Cyst Associated With a Developing Mandibular Premolar in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report of a Rare Entity.

Dentigerous cysts are developmental odontogenic cysts commonly associated with impacted teeth; however, their occurrence in young children i … gical enucleation, extraction of the affected primary tooth, and removal of the displaced permanent tooth germ. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis. Postoperative healing was uneventful. This report highlights the importance of early diagnosis and timely management of odontogenic cysts in children to prevent complications.

Effects of removing inferior alveolar neurovascular structures on mandibular growth and the eruption of permanent dentition in puppies.

Investigation was performed on the effects of removing the inferior alveolar neurovascular structures on the permanent dentition and mandibular growth. Five puppies with erupted deciduous teeth had the inferior alveolar neurovascular structures removed unilaterally. When the test animals were 28 weeks old, examination revealed that the deciduous teeth on the side operated had exfoliated but permanent teeth did not replace them. On the other hand, the permanent teeth on the side not operated on replaced the exfoliated deciduous teeth. After a second period of 28 weeks, the germs of the permanen
