Mapping an Overlooked Spiral of Trauma-Exposure to Sexual Abuse and Psycho-Spiritual Outcomes in Patients With Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and sexual abuse survivorship both involve trauma, yet little evidence synthesis has examined psycho-spiritual outcomes at the intersection of both. This may limit nurses' recognition of compounded distress in patients with cancer and sexual trauma, who often remain silent. OBJECTIVE: To appraise psycho-spiritual outcomes associated with sexual abuse exposure in patients with cancer. INTERVENTIONS/METHODS: A systematic search was conducted on 10 databases until April 21, 2026. Unadjusted and adjusted effect estimates were pooled separately. RESULTS: Of the identified sour

Complex regional pain syndrome--type I: research relevance, practice realities.

Because complex regional pain syndrome--type I usually occurs following minor trauma, clients will most likely be encountered in community settings. Nurses will come into contact with them as family members, friends, neighbors, and coworkers. It is important that nurses become knowledgeable about this syndrome to assist in early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment. The latest research findings have relevance for current practice, but many questions remain unanswered.

Analysis of the impact of emergency care on the incidence of in-hospital complications in patients with acute abdomen and the incidence of complications.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of graded emergency nursing intervention on the incidence of in-hospital complications in patients with acute abdomen and to evaluate patient satisfaction with nursing care. METHODS: Between June 2021 and June 2023, 100 patients with acute abdomen (85 with acute appendicitis) were randomly assigned to a control group (routine nursing care, n = 50) or an emergency care (EC) group (graded emergency intervention, n = 50). Graded emergency nursing intervention was implemented based on the Emergency Severity Index (ESI) version 4, which stratifies patients from

Educational Practices for Providers of Trauma-Informed Care: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: As more is learned about trauma and the ways in which trauma informed care (TIC) is provided, it is important to explore the education and training offered to those individuals who provide TIC. PURPOSE: This scoping review examined training provided to individuals who interact with persons aged birth to 21 years old who have experienced or are experiencing trauma. METHOD: The researchers searched six databases and identified 16 peer-reviewed articles in the areas of medicine/nursing, social work, and education published from 2012 to 2019 that met inclusion criteria. DISCUSSION:

Affective Responses, Coping, and Mental Health Outcomes: An Exploratory Needs Assessment.

Health care workers (HCWs) have shouldered the burdens during the COVID pandemic (eg, working longer hours with less community support) resulting in significant burnout, stress, anxiety, depression, direct trauma (eg, fear for own safety) and indirect trauma exposure (eg, working with trauma patients). As such, it is necessary to strengthen resilience and reduce the likelihood of burnout. This evaluation used utilization focused evaluation to understand the extent staff experience affective responses, mental health outcomes, and frequency of coping skills at this stage of the ongoing pandemic.

Facilitators and Barriers to Providing Trauma-Informed Abortion Care.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals who undergo abortion are up to three times more likely to have experienced prior traumatic events compared with the general reproductive age population, including sexual assault, interpersonal violence, or adverse childhood events. We sought to elicit and understand perceived facilitators and barriers to providing trauma-responsive abortion care among abortion providers. METHODS: We recruited providers from Chicago-area abortion clinics to participate in a 45-minute, semi-structured one-on-one phone or Zoom interview. We used thematic content analysis to analyze data,

Dissociative Identity Disorder in Schools Part I.

Dissociation is a normal life adaptation that can become pronounced and disruptive in the setting of repeated or extreme exposure to trauma. Children and adolescents may experience dissociation due to a trauma or stressor-related disorder, anxiety, or depressive disorders. Children and adolescents also may mimic behavior they see online as a way of expressing internally painful and intolerable experiences. Myth and misinformation surround the diagnosis of dissociative identity disorder (DID), formerly multiple personality disorder. The purpose of this article is to provide school nurses with e

[Length of hospital stay for patients with proximal femoral fractures : Influencing factors].

BACKGROUND: In departments of orthopedic and trauma surgery patients with proximal femoral fractures constitute the largest proportion of trauma patients. The length of stay (LOS) has economic consequences and prolonged LOS leads to a shortage in bed capacity. OBJECTIVES: In this study treatment and patient-related factors that influence the LOS of patients with proximal femoral fractures were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Treatment and patient-related data of 242 patients (age >64 years) were recorded retrospectively and included residential aspects, legal guardianship, time of admiss

[Profile of nursing workers with RSI/WRMD diagnosis in Salvador-Bahia in 1998-2002].

This quantitative study aimed at drawing the profile of nursing workers with a confirmed RSI/WRMD diagnosis, seen at the Center of Workers' Health Studies (Cesat) in Salvador, Bahia, from 1998 to 2002. Data collection was performed based on medical reports and, complementarily, guidelines with items of interest for this investigation. Out of the medical reports, only those of nursing workers were selected. There was the identification of 79 workers--four nurses, 74 assistants, and one technician. There was a prevalence of women aged between 30 and 49, with high school and a monthly income from

Hand-arm vibration syndrome: a guide for nurses.

It is estimated that 1.2 million workers are now exposed to hazardous levels of vibration in their work. In the year 1995-1996, over 3,000 new cases of hand-arm vibration syndrome were assessed by the Department of Social Security (DSS) under the Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit Scheme. Formerly called vibration white finger, it is the most common of all diseases assessed by the DSS, with the majority of workers affected having up to 14 per cent disability. This article explains the syndrome and its management.

Identification and management of cognitive and perceptual deficits in the rehabilitation patient.

The rehabilitation nurse frequently encounters patients who display cognitive/perceptual impairments as a result of a head injury or cerebrovascular accident. Deficits in attention, perception, memory, sequencing, and initiation may prevent the patient from reaching goals set by nurses or other rehabilitation professionals. When nurses recognize cognitive or perceptual impairments and have techniques available that will compensate for such deficits, they can more readily help patients meet rehabilitation goals.

Intracranial hypertension. Advances in intracranial pressure monitoring.

Research is continuing to find improved methods for monitoring intracranial pressure as well as the effect of intracranial hypertension on the patient's recovery. Each of the methods of monitoring has its advantages and disadvantages and the use of one method over others is usually the preference of the neurosurgeon. It is the responsibility of the nurse to be aware of the strengths and weaknesses of each device in order to strengthen patient outcome. Again, the major benefits of the bolt are a low infection rate and easy insertion. Problems associated with its use of which the nurse should be

Understanding the Neuro-ophthalmology of Head Trauma: A Review of the Current Literature.

Head trauma is a major medical, social, economic, national, and public health priority issue in the United States. In severe head trauma, the overwhelming clinical manifestations are so compelling that damage to the visual system is most likely to be ignored. Both the afferent and efferent visual systems are susceptible to injury after head trauma, and physicians should be aware of the visual system and perform a thorough neuro-ophthalmic evaluation in patients presenting with head trauma. Most of the data available on neuro-ophthalmic complications of head trauma including cortical blindness,

Through the nurse's lens: Bereavement photography and creative interventions in nursing care.

Art has long supported healing, and, in nursing, creative practices such as music, writing, and photography enhance holistic care by fostering connection, emotional well-being, and comfort during end-of-life moments. Bereavement photography, particularly in neonatal and pediatric settings, provides families with a tangible way to honor and remember their child, while also helping nurses and caregivers process their grief. Research shows that images are deeply valued as keepsakes of life and love, and when offered with ethical, culturally sensitive, and trauma-informed approaches, photography b

Principles of trauma-informed care evident in person centered care for persons living with dementia in low resource settings.

OBJECTIVES: This study identified how long-term care stakeholders describe trauma-informed care (TIC) practices in low resource settings. METHOD: This was a secondary data analysis about person-centered care (PCC) for persons living with dementia (PLWD). The parent study purposively recruited administrators, direct care staff, PLWD, and care partners in two nursing homes and two assisted living communities in urban and rural federally designated medically underserved areas. In depth semi-structured interviews were conducted about PCC; the parent study did not include TIC-specific probes. Resp
