Fascioliasis presenting as colon cancer liver metastasis on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Fascioliasis is caused by watercress and similar freshwater plants or drinking water or beverages contaminated with metacercaria … atica IgG enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was positive. The patient was administered two doses of triclabendazole (10 mg/kg/dose) 24 h apart. During the follow-up period, dilatation was detected in the common bile duct, and Fasciola parasites were extracted from the common bile duct by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Triclabendazole was a …

A young female with fever, abdominal pain and eosinophilia.

Fascioliasis has been reported from many countries across the globe. Acute phase of liver fluke is characterised by fever, abdominal pain and peripheral blood eosinophilia while the chronic phase is marked by chronic inflammation involving biliary tract. It is commonly diagnosed by a radiologist due to characteristic branching abscesses seen on CT scan, highly suggestive of liver fluke. Diagnosis is made by demonstration of eggs on direct microscopic examination of duodenal aspirate or bile. Screening of family members is recommended once diagnosis is has been made. Triclabendazole is the drug…

[Fasciola hepatica infection acquired in Denmark].

In this case report, a 64-year-old woman with symptoms of lethargy, nausea, fluctuating temperature, and weight loss was suspected of a disease of cardiological or haematological aetiology. She was diagnosed with liver fluke infection based on serological evidence, eosinophilia, relevant exposure, and clinical presentation. High-dose triclabendazole led to symptom resolution. On several occasions, she had been eating watercress from a meadow with grazing sheep. The tendency of eating raw watercress and other green plants collected in nature confers an increased risk of developing liver fluke i…

Hepatobiliary fascioliasis: A neglected re-emerging threat, its diagnostic and management challenges.

Hepatobiliary fascioliasis is a neglected but re-emerging parasitic disease caused by Fasciola hepatica. Humans become infected by consuming … ow earlier diagnosis, but they are still not widely available, especially in low-resource settings. Triclabendazole is the only recommended medical treatment, yet it is not widely available. In addition, the emerging reports of resistance represent a potential threat in managing this infection. Other modalities could be needed in addition to triclabendazole, such …

Screening the Pathogen Box for Identification of New Chemical Agents with Anti-Fasciola hepatica Activity.

Fascioliasis is an infectious parasitic disease distributed globally and caused by the liver fluke Fasciola hepatica or F. gigantica This neglected tropical disease affects both animals and humans, and it represents a latent public health problem due to the significant economic losses related to its effects on animal husbandry. For decades, triclabendazole has been the unique anti-Fasciola drug that can effectively treat this disease. However, triclabendazole resistance in fascioliasis has more recently been reported around the world, and thus, the discovery of novel drugs is an urgent need. T…

Characterisation of a novel panel of polymorphic microsatellite loci for the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, using a next generation sequencing approach.

The liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica is an economically important pathogen of sheep and cattle and has been described by the WHO as a re-emerging zoonosis. Control is heavily reliant on the use of drugs, particularly triclabendazole and as a result resistance has now emerged. The population structure of F. hepatica is not well known, yet it can impact on host-parasite interactions and parasite control with drugs, particularly regarding the spread of triclabendazole resistance. We have identified 2448 potential microsatellites from 83 Mb of F. hepatica genome sequence using msatfinder. Thirty-fiv…

A 'Fluke' Diagnosis: Suspecting Fascioliasis as a Rare Cause of Hepatic Abscess.

Hepatic abscess is a rare complication of fascioliasis, with fewer than 50 reported cases worldwide. The diagnosis requires a high degree of suspicion and is often identified after extensive investigation leading to delays in treatment. With this case report, we aim to highlight the need for a higher index of suspicion in non endemic regions like the USA, especially in cities with large immigrant populations. Given the ease and success rates of treatment with oral triclabendazole, the morbidity from unnecessary invasive testing and disease burden is preventable with a thorough evaluation and t…

Severe iron deficiency anemia and marked eosinophilia in adolescent girls with the diagnosis of human fascioliasis.

Human fascioliasis (HF), caused by the common liver fluke Fasciola hepatica, is an endemic infection in many parts of tropical countries. HF can also be seen in some of the non-tropical countries. This report describes two girls with severe iron deficiency anemia and eosinophilia, who were diagnosed as HF. The infection was successfully eliminated with the administration of triclabendazole. No side effects or recurrence was observed after the treatment. It should be kept in mind that marked eosinophilia with severe iron deficiency anemia should alert pediatricians to the possibility of F. hepa…

Fasciolosis is treated with triclabendazole, although resistant isolates of the parasite are increasingly being reported. This, together with the limited efficacy of the assayed vaccines against this infection, poses fasciolosis as a veterinary and human health problem of growing concern. In …

Experimental infection of liver flukes, Fasciola hepatica and Fascioloides magna, in Bison (Bison bison).

This experimental study was conducted to evaluate the susceptibility of American bison (Bison bison) to liver flukes, Fascioloides magna and Fasciola hepatica. Six bison were each experimentally inoculated with 600 metacercariae of Fascioloides magna, and three were later treated with triclabendazole suspension at 40 mg/kg of body weight. Fasciola hepatica in the Differential Diagnosis of a Patient with Obstructive Jaundice and Eosinophilia.

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode that is visible to the naked eye. The diagnosis can be made by serology or by clinical improvement and decrease of eosinophilia after triclabendazole treatment or by finding parasite eggs in the stool. Sometimes the diagnosis is possible during unnecessary surgery, laparoscopic cholecystectomy, and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). F. hepatica infection should be considered in patients with typical clinical findings; the elevation of liver enzymes indicating cholestasis, eosinophilia, and characteristic computed tomography (CT) or ultrasono…

We report 3 cases of fascioliasis imported to Norway: a 24-y-old male Vietnamese immigrant and a 51-y-old female Vietnamese immigrant with acute fascioliasis, and a 2-y-old male Ethiopian adoptee with chronic fascioliasis. Treatment with oral triclabendazole led to prompt cure in all 3 patients. Imported fascioliasis is rarely reported but should be suspected in patients with a travel history to endemic areas, …

Hepatic fascioliasis in Mashhad, Northeast Iran: first report.

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease caused by a leaf-like worm (fluke) called Fasciola. Herein, we present a case of human hepatic fascioliasis. A 57-year-old man was referred to the hospital for ambiguous gastrointestinal symptoms with suspected hemangioma. Hepatic fascioliasis was diagnosed using abdominal computed tomography and serology. He tested positive for the IgG antibody against Fasciola hepatica. The patient was treated successfully with triclabendazole. This is the first published report on the occurrence of fascioliasis in Northeast Iran, a non-endemic area for fascioliasis. Our re…
