What about the mental health of adults?

Mental health problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression have surfaced and are affecting many residents in Fukushima prefecture as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami and the subsequent nuclear disaster. It has also been reported that such mental health problems appeared and persisted after large-scale nuclear accidents in the past, such as the Chernobyl and Three Mile Island accidents, widely affecting the disaster victims.

[A-bomb experience and Hibakushas' lives].

The A-bomb experience of Hiroshima may shed light on the reconstruction plan of the Eastern Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and on implementing middle to long range care plans for the victims of the catastrophe. An important element in the success of Hiroshima's reconstruction was the understanding of the realities of everyday life of citizens and hibakusha by local and national government, and incorporation of those points of view into the reconstruction plan. Sharing of accurate and fair information about the disaster, restoration, and reconstruction with citizens was and still is a prerequisit

Grief revisited.

The article serves to examine the cultural influences on attitudes towards the deceased and bereaved, as well as on the practice of mourning, and to revisit normal and pathological variants of grief. Grief is a subjective state of psychological and physiological reaction to the loss of a loved one. Reaction to the loss is experienced internally in a uniform manner across cultures. However, mourning, the voluntary social expression of the loss, varies from culture to culture. Rituals provide a standardised mode of behaviour, which helps to relieve the sense of uncertainty or loss. There were re

INTERPOL DVI best-practice standards--An overview.

A description of the International Criminal Police Organization and its role in disaster victim identification is provided along with a summary of the standards developed and circulated to responders in INTERPOL member countries (188 throughout the world) to insure evidence-based DVI practices. Following the INTERPOL-mediated DVI response in 2005 to the SE Asia tsunami, many lessons learned have been recorded. Based on these current standards, INTERPOL's approach to DVI reflects a modern approach and philosophy.

A preliminary model to evaluate disaster management efforts.

Disasters are diversified in all aspects: they range from storms and tornadoes to earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones etc. They affect a range of countries. Most disasters are caused by geographical factors. The overall response depends on the wealth of a country. For example, Japan is better prepared than Nepal or Haiti. Disaster responses are multidimensional and are assumed to be effective. From a service quality perspective, groups of responders provide services to victims. Effectiveness and efficiency of victim services are perhaps two outcome measures. Unfortunately, published studies on

[Invasive fungal disease due to Scedosporium, Fusarium and mucorales].

The number of emerging organisms causing invasive fungal infections has increased in the last decades. These etiological agents include Scedosporium, Fusarium and mucorales. All of them can cause disseminated, virulent, and difficult-to treat infections in immunosuppressed patients, the most affected, due to their resistance to most available antifungal agents. Current trends in transplantation including the use of new immunosuppressive treatments, the common prescription of antifungal agents for prophylaxis, and new ecological niches could explain the emergence of these fungal pathogens. Thes

Infectious diseases following natural disasters: prevention and control measures.

Natural disasters may lead to infectious disease outbreaks when they result in substantial population displacement and exacerbate synergic risk factors (change in the environment, in human conditions and in the vulnerability to existing pathogens) for disease transmission. We reviewed risk factors and potential infectious diseases resulting from prolonged secondary effects of major natural disasters that occurred from 2000 to 2011. Natural disasters including floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, tropical cyclones (e.g., hurricanes and typhoons) and tornadoes have been secondarily described with the

Responding to international disasters.

Large-scale disasters attract broad coverage by the media and images of death and destruction circulate worldwide in minutes. This prompts the authorities in disaster-stricken areas to request external medical teams, and well-intentioned countries and aid organisations dispatch them to offer care for the victims (World Health Organization/Pan American Health Organization (WHO/PAHO) 2004a). This article provides information on disaster management for those with an interest in responding to international disasters such as the Indian Ocean tsunami in December 2004.

Socioeconomic status, damage-related conditions, and PTSD following the Fukushima-daiichi nuclear power plant accident:The Fukushima Health Management Survey.

The Great East Japan Earthquake severely damaged the Tohoku and Kanto districts, and Fukushima Prefecture faced a subsequent nuclear disaster. Few studies have reported the effects of socioeconomic stressors on individuals' mental status following disasters. We analyzed the responses of 60,704 adult residents of a designated restricted area to the PTSD Checklist-Stressor-Specific Version (PCL-S). The relationships between the PCL-S scores and demographic, socioeconomic, and damage-related variables were analyzed using regression analysis to predict participants' severity of PTSD symptoms. A Victim of the Great East Japan Earthquake Identified with the Preserved Medical Samples of Her Deceased Mother.

On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake and huge tsunami occurred near the Pacific coast of northeast Japan, in which more than 18,000 people died or went missing and more than 120,000 buildings were destroyed. In Taro district, one of the areas struck hardest by the tsunami, a middle-aged woman was found deceased in the rubble. Generally, a family physician can recognize victims based on their appearance; the place where they were found; their home or work address; their belongings; the identifying marks on their clothes; their dental charts; and their living biological parents, childre

Social ties may play a critical role in mitigating sleep difficulties in disaster-affected communities: a cross-sectional study in the Ishinomaki area, Japan.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: We examined the association between social factors and sleep difficulties among the victims remaining at home in the Ishinomaki area after the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami and identified potentially modifiable factors that may mitigate vulnerability to sleep difficulties during future traumatic events or disasters. DESIGN: A cross-sectional household survey was conducted from October 2011 to March 2012 (6-12 mo after the disaster) in the Ishinomaki area, Japan. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to examine associations between social

The 'slow-burn effect' of human trafficking following disaster.

A disaster is frequently cited as a driver of human trafficking, with claims that earthquakes, tsunamis, or typhoons create a chaotic post-calamity environment ripe for traffickers to recruit their victims. Theory suggests that increased poverty, displacement, and a breakdown of law and order contribute to this situation. Yet, there is little discussion in the literature of how post-disaster trafficking unfolds, coupled with a dearth of empirical evidence. This paper challenges existing disaster-trafficking assumptions through interviews with trafficking survivors in the Philippines, a disaste

Antioxidative activity of fractionated melanoidin-like product from molasses and its application in phytodesalination through oilseed rape.

This study initially focuses on the fractionation of a melanoidin-like product (MLP) from sugarcane molasses and its antioxidant properties. The radical scavenging activities of the fractionated MLP were evaluated based on methanol concentration used during fractionation. Higher methanol concentrations enhanced the antioxidant capacity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and superoxide anion radicals. Additionally, a phytodesalination experiment using oilseed rape was conducted under varying MLP, NaCl, and artificial seawater concentrations. Results showed that the oilseed rape increased sup

The Role of Social Determinants in Mental Health and Resilience After Disasters: Implications for Public Health Policy and Practice.

In this general literature review, we will explore the impacts and contribution of social determinants to mental health and resiliency following both natural and man-made disasters. Natural disasters, such as wildfires, earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes, as well as man-made disasters, such as civil wars, have been known to inflict significant damage to the mental health of the victims. In this paper, we mainly explore some most studied vulnerability and protective social determinant factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, socials support and socioeconomic status for the mental health and r

Natural disasters and nontuberculous mycobacteria: a recipe for increased disease?

Infectious diseases acquired by survivors of large-scale natural disasters complicate the recovery process. During events such as tsunamis, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornados and well into the recovery period, victims often are exposed to water-soil mixtures that have relocated with indigenous microbes. Because nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous in water and soil, there is potential for increased exposure to these organisms during natural disasters. In this hypothesis-driven commentary, we discuss the rise in NTM lung disease and natural disasters and examine the geographic ov

The genus Aeromonas: taxonomy, pathogenicity, and infection.

Over the past decade, the genus Aeromonas has undergone a number of significant changes of practical importance to clinical microbiologists and scientists alike. In parallel with the molecular revolution in microbiology, several new species have been identified on a phylogenetic basis, and the genome of the type species, A. hydrophila ATCC 7966, has been sequenced. In addition to established disease associations, Aeromonas has been shown to be a significant cause of infections associated with natural disasters (hurricanes, tsunamis, and earthquakes) and has been linked to emerging or new illne

Minutes matter for life safety and risk exposure in Milford Sound, New Zealand.

The number of people killed by rapid-onset, highly-lethal natural hazards is usually proportional to the number of people directly exposed yet population mobility makes such exposure temporally variable. In hazardous tourist destinations that are dominated by highly mobile transient visitors, this makes it especially challenging to assess and manage risk. While the temporal dynamics of population exposure have been identified as a necessary input to risk analysis, lack of data and methods means such assessments are limited to using simplified assumptions at low temporal resolution (e.g. day-ni

Gastrointestinal symptoms and food/nutrition concerns after the great East Japan earthquake in March 2011: survey of evacuees in a temporary shelter.

On March 11, 2011, a 9.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in the eastern Pacific Ocean off the coast of northern Japan. A resulting tsunami struck the Japan Pacific coast, causing >20,000 deaths, injuries and missing persons. Survivors' post-tsunami health and nutritional status were surveyed one month after the disaster in a school shelter in Ishinomaki City. Hyogo College of Medicine's disaster relief team observations and survivors' questionnaires were used to assess the disaster's effects on survivors' lifestyles and gastrointestinal symptoms while residing in temporary shelters.
