Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that most commonly affects the lungs. Ocular involvement as part of extrapulmonary TB is noted in around 2-18% of cases of extrapulmonary TB. Any part of the eyes can be affected by the tubercular disease process, and a high index of suspicion is required for accurate diagnosis. Because the location is extrapulmonary, obtaining a proper sample is difficult, and the paucibacillary nature of the disease also makes microbiological detection a diagnostic challenge. Response to antitubercular therapy is usually

The diagnosis of OTB (Ocular tuberculosis) is usually difficult to make. Definitive diagnosis requires the identification of M. tuberculosis organisms in ocular tissues or fluids, but samples are often difficult to obtain, and biopsy may be hard to justify. We describe a 50-years-old Maghreb male, who presented a multifocal choroiditis associated with a choroidal tuberculoma on the left eye. Based on positive QuantiFERON-TB-Gold test and suggestive clinical and radiographic findings, a diagnosis of presumed ocular tuberculosis was made. Serial swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT)

The spread of tuberculosis is directly related to the processes of globalization and migration. Tuberculosis has also been the main cause of fatality associated with antimicrobial resistance and also the main cause of death in people who have HIV infection. Additionally, tuberculosis smites the lungs in 80% of patients, and in the remaining 20% of patients the tuberculosis may smites other organs, such as the vision/eye. Ocular tuberculosis is a specific infectious disease of bacterial etiology with a chronic and persistent course, the prognosis of which is extremely doubtful. Even effective c

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) is a major infection that can affect the eye as first and sole presentation without features of systemic disease. Controversy exists regarding diagnosis and management of tubercular uveitis (TBU), further compounded by regional variations in disease expression. Purpose: Collaborative Ocular Tuberculosis Study (COTS)-1 aims to address knowledge deficits through collaboration amongst uveitis specialists across the globe by sharing the data of patients with TBU presented at participating centers from January 2004 to December 2014. Methods: Data collection was facilit

In recent years, tuberculosis has re-emerged as a serious public health problem, raising the possibility that tuberculous eye disease may also have become more prevalent. Ocular tuberculosis usually occurs in apparently healthy individuals. It is rarely observed in patients with active pulmonary disease. An eight-year-old boy was admitted to our department because of chronic granulomatous anterior uveitis on his left eye. His medical history was unremarkable. There were no systemic symptoms of tuberculosis. He had a positive purified protein derivative test reaction. In our case, the diagnosis

OBJECTIVES: Ocular tuberculosis is an extrapulmonary tuberculous infection and has varying manifestations which pose a huge challenge to diagnosis and treatment. The purpose of this study is to describe the various clinical manifestations of ocular inflammations due to tuberculosis and to assess the response to treatment following antituberculous therapy (ATT) and corticosteroids in these patients.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 29 patients with presumed ocular tuberculosis who were started on ATT and completed follow-up of at least 6 months after ATT was init

BACKGROUND: Ocular tuberculosis (TB) affects 1-2% of patients with TB, with TB uveitis being the most common. This series aims to look at different manifestations of tuberculosis associated uveitis and the different tests used to make a presumptive or definitive diagnosis.
METHODS: Patients diagnosed with TB related uveitis in Hong Kong SAR between 2017 and 2020 were reviewed. Demographics, clinical features, investigations and treatments of patients were collected.
RESULTS: Fifteen eyes in 10 patients with a mean age 57.30 ± 10.17 years were included. The ocular manifestations on presentati

During the 19th and early 20th century the achievements in the study of ocular tuberculosis were of great significance. The development of pathological anatomy in those years helped physicians to understand the histological image and the pathophysiology of the disease and allowed the scientists to detect the specific anatomical structures of the eye, where the disease could be present. The physicians of those years tried to describe the clinical image of the disease and to give value information, in order to facilitate the diagnosis. Despite major efforts made in the field of clinical approach

PurposeTimely diagnosis of intraocular tuberculosis (IOTB) along with detection of drug resistance can save many eyes from visual impairment. With the growing incidence of IOTB and rising drug resistance, a reliable diagnostic platform for simultaneous detection of the agent and mutated gene is urgently needed. The MTBDRplus assay was evaluated directly on vitreous fluid samples for the same.Patients and methodsIn a prospective study, The MTBDRplus assay was performed on 127 vitreous fluid samples (77 'study group' comprising cases of presumed ocular tuberculosis and 50 'control group' cases o

Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis that most commonly affects the lungs. However, extrapulmonary manifestations of TB can affect the eye and surrounding orbital tissues. TB can affect nearly any tissue in the eye, and a high index of suspicion is required for accurate diagnosis. Systemic anti-tuberculosis treatment is required in cases of ocular TB, and steroids are sometimes necessary to prevent tissue damage secondary to inflammation. Delays in diagnosis are common and can result in morbidities such as loss of an affected eye. It is impor

The case is reported of a patient with pulmonary and ocular tuberculosis presenting with blurred vision in both eyes. A 27-year-old well-nourished male nursing-home resident with a previous history of traumatic intracerebral hemorrhage was brought to the ophthalmological clinic due to progressively blurred vision. His best-corrected visual acuity was 20/400 in the right eye with only light perception in the left eye. Fundus examinations revealed retinal segmental periphlebitis and hemorrhagic retinitis in the right eye and dense vitreous hemorrhage in the left eye. The Mantoux test was negativ

Ocular tuberculosis is not uncommon ocular presentation in our community nowadays. Rare presentations described mainly in the immunocompromised patients. The diagnosis of ocular TB is presumed in the vast majority of the cases of the intraocular TB. We are presenting a very rare presentation of definitive intraocular TB in a healthy 24-year-old male.

Purpose. To highlight the importance of using the Farnsworth Panel D-15 Hue test in colour vision testing in patients on ethambutol treatment. Case Report. A 70 year-old lady received ethambutol as part of her anti-tuberculous regime. She developed blue-yellow colour defect detectable with the Farnsworth Panel D-15 Hue test, but not with the Isihara Pseudoisochromatic Plates. Ethambutol was immediately discontinued from her anti-tuberculous regime. Two months later, her colour vision returned to normal. Conclusion. This case report illustrates the importance of regular monitoring of patients r

The paper describes the basic methods for the diagnosis and treatment of ocular tuberculosis, which are based on the studied mechanisms of its pathogenesis. It updates the pathomorphism of the disease, the results of experimental studies dealing with new diagnostic techniques, including an objective estimation of a focal response to tuberculin. The results of studies of ocular tuberculosis in children, as well as the efficacy of the new Russian immunotropic drugs glutoxim and betaleukin are outlined.

A case of histologically proven intra-ocular tuberculosis is described. The condition was preceded by penetrating trauma, and no evidence of systemic tuberculosis other than a positive Mantoux test was found. Numerous acid-fast bacilli were seen in pathological sections of the eye. We suspect that a tuberculosis bacillaemia from an undetected healed focus coincided with the trauma and thereby produced intra-ocular tuberculosis.
