Efficacy of monthly treatment with oral fluralaner (Bravecto® 1-Month) against Tunga penetrans in dogs in Brazil: a randomized, double-blind, controlled field study.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by the adult female sand flea (Tunga penetrans). Dogs are considered important reservoirs of T. penetrans in Brazil. The aim of this study was to determine the monthly insecticidal efficacy of a single oral administration of fluralaner at a dose of 10-18 mg/kg (Bravecto® 1-Month, also registered as Defenza® in some countries; MSD Animal Health) in dogs naturally infested with T. penetrans. METHODS: This clinical trial was conducted in a rural community located in Ilhéus, Bahia, Brazil. A total of 64 dogs were selected and distribute…

Infestation by Tunga penetrans.

Infestation by the flea Tunga penetrans, although quite prevalent in Central America, South America, and Africa, is rarely recognized or reported in North America. This report describes a case of tungiasis occurring in a New York resident who acquired the disease in Africa. The patient manifested characteristic lesions of white papules with central black pits on the dorsa of her toes. Treatment consisted of removal of the offending parasites.

[Dermatology in French Guiana].

In French Guayana, climatic and geographic conditions enhance development of numerous fungal, parasitic and microbial skin diseases. The most particular infectious diseases of this French department are lobomycosis, chromomycosis (Phialophora pedrosoi), creeping disease, cutaneous leishmaniasis, tungiasis, mycobacterial ulcus (Mycobacterium ulcerans) and papular dermatitis caused by nettling hairs of lepidoptera (Hylesia urticans). The occurence of these skin diseases is demonstrative of pathological ecology of the Amazonian country.

The fate of the embedded virgin sand flea Tunga penetrans: hypothesis, self-experimentation and photographic sequence.

We describe the morphological development of a single penetrated female sand flea (Tunga penetrans) in a medical expatriate working in Madagascar. The embedded parasite developed abnormally in two aspects. First, it lived twice as long as usually. Second, it did not expel a single egg during a period of two months. We explain these abnormalities by the fact that the female sand flea remained virgin after the penetration into the skin and, therefore, mature eggs did not develop. Our observations are seminal findings in a long dispute between entomologists and suggest that normally the fertiliza

Tunga penetrans in Giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) from Argentina.

Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera, Tungidae) is a flea that infests humans and a variety of domestic and wild animals. Burrowing of the female flea under the skin causes tungiasis, a disease that manifests in skin lesions that if untreated, can progress to severe complications. In this paper, we report the first case of T. penetrans in a wild giant anteater (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) from Argentina. We describe the lesions and discuss the potential role of the giant anteater as a host or reservoir for this flea.

Ectoparasitic infestations.

Ectoparasitic infestations are highly prevalent in resource-poor populations throughout the world and are associated with considerable morbidity. Reliable data on the epidemiology, immunology, and therapy of ectoparasitic infestations and on the biology of the parasites remain scarce. The control of parasitic skin diseases, such as scabies, pediculosis, tungiasis, myiasis, and cutaneous larva migrans in endemic areas remains a challenge. Using appropriate study designs, it is imperative to increase further the knowledge on the various aspects of the parasites and the infestations they cause.

Tunga penetrans in a young dog imported to Denmark from Brazil; a case report.

The number of people who travel internationally with their pets is increasing. Consequently, veterinarians around the world are more likely to encounter parasitic diseases formerly restricted to certain geographical locations. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of tungiasis, a disease caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, in a dog imported from Brazil to Denmark. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of canine T. penetrans infestation in Scandinavia.

Cutaneous ectoparasites.

Parasites inhabit many places in the world. Some of these can inhabit the human skin or body. Many of these have been eradicated in the developed countries but persist in some tropical environments that are fun places to visit. Visitors can bring such parasites home with them such as scabies, cutaneous larva migrans, tungiasis and myiasis. Their clinical manifestations and treatment are presented for physicians evaluating and treating travelers from exotic places.

First report of Tunga trimamillata infection in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Tungiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Tunga penetrans and, less commonly, Tunga trimamillata. It affects the skin of humans and animals in rural or low-income communities. The disease is considered endemic in Ecuador, with most cases reported in the Amazon and Andean regions. There are few cases reported on T. trimamillata in Ecuador, most of which have been reported in the canton of Santa Isabel, Azuay Province. Unlike T. penetrans, no cases of canine infection have been reported for T.trimamillata before. CASE REPORT: A canine patient was presented for medical cons…

Cost-Effective PCR-Based Identification of Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera) Larvae Extracted from Soil Samples Containing PCR Inhibitor-Rich Material.

Tungiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by skin-penetrating female Tunga penetrans fleas. Although tungiasis causes severe health problems, its ecology is poorly understood and morphological descriptions of the larvae are unavailable. To identify T. penetrans immature stages and sites where they develop, diagnostic PCRs are required. However, flea larvae feed on soil organic matter rich in PCR inhibitors. Here, three DNA preparation methods, including a soil DNA kit that removes inhibitors, a simple ammonium acetate precipitation approach (AmAcet) and a crude lysate of larvae (CL), we…

Tunga penetrans: a stowaway from around the world.

Tungiasis is a cutaneous ectoparasitic infestation by the female sand flea Tunga penetrans. It is predominantly a health problem in sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America and South America. However, increasing numbers of returning travellers, immigrants, and adopted children are also affected in non-tropical countries. It is a cause of substantial morbidity, with prevalence rates as high as 76% in certain endemic areas. To date, the early extraction of the flea is still the first line therapy.

Myth or truth: investigation of the jumping ability of Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae).

Female sand fleas (Tunga penetrans Linnaeus, 1758, Siphonaptera: Tungidae) cause a severe parasitic skin disease known as tungiasis. T. penetrans is a small flea, measuring less than 1 mm in length. The females of this species burrow into the skin of human and animal hosts and mostly affect the feet. This has led to the anecdotal assumption that T. penetrans, unlike its relatives in the Siphonaptera family, would have a limited jumping ability potentially not reaching higher body parts. However, there is no data supporting this. This study evaluated the jumping capabilities of T. penetrans for…

Visual cues attract adult Tunga penetrans (Siphonaptera: Tungidae).

Tunga penetrans (Linnaeus, 1758) (Siphonaptera: Tungidae) is an ectoparasitic flea whose adult females cause tungiasis by embedding into the host's skin. Environmental, social and financial challenges in tungiasis endemic areas have left this disease neglected and lacking locally available control measures. One possible approach for controlling T. penetrans targets its off-host stages; however, surveillance tools for adult fleas are still lacking. Moreover, host-seeking cues and behaviour of adult T. penetrans remain largely unknown. In this study, we show that visual cues are attractive to ad…

Investigations on the biology, epidemiology, pathology and control of Tunga penetrans in Brazil. V. Cytokine concentrations in experimentally infected Wistar rats.

Tungiasis is caused by the penetration of the female sand flea Tunga penetrans into the skin of its host. This parasitic skin disease is almost invariably associated with an intense inflammation around embedded fleas, the underlying mechanisms being unknown. A study was undertaken to determine whether Wistar rats can be used as an animal model to assess cytokine kinetics during the natural course of the infection. Laboratory-raised Wistar rats were exposed in cages put on the soil in an area with high human attack rates. Rats were examined daily and blood samples were taken before exposure and…
