The role of personality traits in self-rated oral health and preferences for different types of flawed smiles.

Symmetric, aligned and luminous smiles are usually classified as 'beautiful' and aesthetic. However, smile perception is not strictly governed by standardised rules. Personal traits may influence the perception of non-ideal smiles. We aimed to determine the influence of personality traits in self-rated oral health and satisfaction and in the aesthetic preference for different strategically flawed smiles shown in photographs. Smiles with dark teeth, with uneven teeth, with lip asymmetry and dental asymmetry were ordered from 1 to 4 as a function of the degree of beauty by 548 participants, of w

Evidence for metabolic aberrations in asymptomatic persons with type 2 diabetes after initiation of simvastatin therapy.

Hydroxymethylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase inhibitors (statins) prevent vascular events and are widely prescribed, particularly in persons with type 2 diabetes. However, intolerability because of myopathic symptoms often limits their use. We investigated the effects of simvastatin on parameters of mitochondrial function and muscle gene expression in 11 subjects with type 2 diabetes, none of whom had statin intolerance. After withdrawal of statins for 2 months, we obtained blood samples, performed vastus lateralis muscle biopsies, and assessed whole body resting energy expenditure (REE). We the

A moderate-intensity weight-bearing exercise program for a person with type 2 diabetes and peripheral neuropathy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The exercise guidelines for people with diabetes mellitus and peripheral neuropathy (DM+PN) have recently changed to allow moderate-intensity weight-bearing exercise, but there are few reports in the literature describing appropriate weight-bearing exercise for those with DM+PN. This case report describes a successful and safe progressive exercise program for an individual with DM+PN. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 76-year-old man with a 30-year history of DM+PN. He participated in a 12-week, moderate-intensity, progressive exercise program (heart rate approximate

Adverse clinical events in patients treated with sirolimus-eluting stents: the impact of Type D personality.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the impact of psychological risk factors on cardiac prognosis in the drug-eluting stent era. We examined whether the distressed personality (Type D) moderates the effect of percutaneous coronary intervention with sirolimus-eluting stent implantation on adverse clinical events at 2-year follow-up. Type D is an emerging risk factor in patients with cardiovascular disease. DESIGN: Prospective follow-up study. METHODS: Three hundred and fifty-eight patients with ischemic heart disease, who consecutively underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with sirolimus

Lipid changes in Niemann-Pick disease type C brain: personal experience and review of the literature.

Niemann-Pick disease type C (NPC) is a neurovisceral disorder characterized by lysosomal sequestration of endocytosed LDL-cholesterol, premature and abnormal enrichment of cholesterol in trans Golgi cisternae and accompanying anomalies in intracellular sterol trafficking. In addition to cholesterol, the NPC lesion has also been shown to impact the metabolism of sphingolipids. Lipids, more particularly glycolipids, were studied in brain tissue from eight cases with proven NPC, ranging from 21 fetal weeks to 19 years of age (one case with rapidly fatal neonatal cholestatic icterus, three cases w

Anxiety and depression in general practitioners: associations with type of parctice, fundholding, gender and other personal characteristics.

Background. There is evidence both that a doctor's own well-being is closely associated with efficiency and positive attitude to patients, and that levels of stress, anxiety and depression in doctors are rising. Objective. This postal survey aimed to measure anxiety and depression levels in general practitioners in 1994 and identify any associations with personal and practice characteristics. Method. All general practitioners with patients in Staffordshire were invited to complete the Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) scale. Results. Six hundred and twenty of 896 general practitioners repl

Communication profiles of two types of gesture using nonverbal persons with severe to profound mental retardation.

A structured communication sampling procedure was used to measure the form and function characteristics of intentional communication acts produced by nonverbal adults with severe mental retardation. Four "contact" subjects (who communicated only with contact gestures) and 4 "distal" subjects (who used distal as well as contact gestures) participated in this study. All subjects produced communication acts that were coded as initiations, and all subjects produced protoimperative-type communication acts. However, contact subjects produced no protodeclarative-type communication acts, whereas all d

Long-term effects on personality development in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Influence of type of treatment.

In a series of 157 patients treated surgically and/or with Milwaukee braces, constituting 83% of the original criterion patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, treated in the Department of Orthopaedics in Gothenburg, Sweden, from 1969 to 1974, a specific psychologic interview was carried out an average of 9 years after treatment. The 92 surgical patients all wore a Milwaukee brace postoperatively for 6-9 months and were gradually weaned over the next year (17 +/- 2 months). The brace-treated patients wore their braces full time for 18 months and part time for another 8 months (26 +/- 3

Development of personalized interpretable multilevel prediction models for the risk assessment of hypoglycemia in Type 1 Diabetes.

Prognostic tools for the timely identification of hypoglycemia can play a pivotal role in Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) management by facilitating preventive interventions that improve health outcomes and enhance quality of life. The adoption of prediction models for hypoglycemia risk assessment hinges on their reliability, which is founded on predictive accuracy and the models' ability to yield interpretable outputs. By leveraging continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and insulin data along with meal information from the medical records of 12 T1DM patients, the present paper aims at the devel

Personal risk factors and types of sport associated with drive for thinness and drive for muscularity in NextGen athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Professional and student-athletes are at risk of developing symptoms of eating disorders (ED), including drive for thinness and muscularity due to personal risk factors (e.g., low self-esteem) and sport-specific characteristics (e.g., sport requirements). However, limited studies have focused on ED symptoms among NextGen athletes (identified in Canada as élite or relève) who compete at the provincial, national, and international levels but are not yet part of national teams. As such, they have access to fewer financial resources and support from their sport federations, which can

Treatment strategies to reduce cardiovascular risk in persons with chronic kidney disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a prevalent and progressive condition associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Diabetes is a common cause of CKD, and both diabetes and CKD increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), the leading cause of death in individuals with CKD. This review will discuss the importance of early detection of CKD and prompt pharmacological intervention to slow CKD progression and delay the development of CVD for improving outcomes. Early CKD is often asymptomatic, and diagnosis usually requires laboratory testing. The combination of estimated glomerular fi

Insulin-induced vasoconstriction is prevalent in muscle microvasculature of otherwise healthy persons with type 1 diabetes.

Insulin's microvascular actions and their relationship to insulin's metabolic actions have not been well studied in adults with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). We compared the metabolic and selected micro- and macrovascular responses to insulin by healthy adult control (n = 16) and subjects with T1DM (n = 15) without clinical microvascular disease. We measured insulin's effect on 1) skeletal muscle microvascular perfusion using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEU), 2) arterial stiffness using carotid-femoral pulse-wave velocity (cfPWV) and radial artery pulse wave analysis (PWA), and 3) metabol

Resilient, undercontrolled, and overcontrolled personality types in Hong Kong youths and the association with mental health outcomes.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between RUO types and mental health in a youth sample in Hong Kong. BACKGROUND: Previous research has found that Resilient, Undercontrolled, and Overcontrolled (RUO) personality types derived from Big Five personality traits are associated with mental health outcomes. Most studies, however, have predominantly been conducted in Western societies. METHOD: Clinical diagnostic interviews and self-rated measures of psychological constructs, covering resilience, rumination, self-esteem and more, were administered to 860 youths aged 15 to

Improving diagnosis and treatment of knee osteoarthritis in persons with type 2 diabetes: development of a complex intervention.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic knee osteoarthritis (OA) commonly co-occurs in people with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and increases the risk for diabetes complications, yet uptake of evidence-based treatment is low. We combined theory, stakeholder involvement and existing evidence to develop a multifaceted intervention to improve OA care in persons with T2DM. This was done in partnership with Arthritis Society Canada to leverage the existing infrastructure and provincial funding for community arthritis care. METHODS: Each step was informed by a User Advisory Panel of stakeholder representatives, includin
