Magnetothermal and ultrasound-activated nanoplatform for the inhalable therapy of bacterial lung infections.

Antibiotic resistance in Klebsiella pneumoniae infections presents significant challenges in treating lung inflammation. To overcome tissue penetration barriers and modulate inflammatory responses, innovative therapeutic approaches are essential. This study introduces an inhalable nanoplatform, FexSy:Gd@PVP (FGP), based on polyvinylpyrrolidone-modified gadolinium-doped nonstoichiometric iron sulfide nanostructures. The platform integrates synergistic magnetic-ultrasound activation with magnetothermal therapy (mMHT), sonodynamic therapy (SDT), and gas therapy (GT) for targeted bacterial lung in

Pulsed ultrasound for bone regeneration - outcomes and hurdles in the clinical application: a systematic review.

Impaired bone-fracture healing is associated with long-term musculoskeletal disability, pain and psychological distress. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a non-invasive and side-effect-free treatment option for fresh, delayed- and non-union bone fractures, which has been used in patients since the early 1990s. Several clinical studies, however, have questioned the usefulness of the LIPUS treatment for the regeneration of long bones, including those with a compromised healing. This systematic review addresses the hurdles that the clinical application of LIPUS encounters. Low patient c

A Review of Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound for Therapeutic Applications.

Ultrasound therapy has a long history of novel applications in medicine. Compared to high-intensity ultrasound used for tissue heating, low-intensity ultrasound has drawn increasing attention recently due to its ability to induce therapeutic changes without biologically significant temperature increase. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a specific type of ultrasound that delivers at a low intensity and outputs in the mode of pulsed waves. It has minimal thermal effects while maintaining the transmission of acoustic energy to the target tissue, which is able to provide noninvasive phys

Therapeutic Myogenesis Induced by Ultrasound Exposure in a Volumetric Skeletal Muscle Loss Injury Model.

BACKGROUND: Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) irradiation has been shown to induce various responses in different cells. It has been shown that LIPUS activates extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) through integrin. PURPOSE: To study the effects of LIPUS on myogenic regulatory factors and other related myogenesis elements in a volumetric skeletal muscle loss injury model. STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. METHODS: C57BL/6J mice were subjected to full-thickness muscle defect injury of the quadriceps and treated with direct application of LIPUS 20 min/d or non-LIPU

Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound ameliorates depression-like behaviors in a rat model of chronic unpredictable stress.

INTRODUCTION: There is an unmet need for better nonpharmaceutical treatments for depression. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) is a novel type of neuromodulation that could be helpful for depressed patients. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to investigate the feasibility and potential mechanisms of LIPUS in the treatment of depression. METHODS: Chronic unpredictable stress (CUS) was used to generate rats with depression-like features that were treated with four weeks of LIPUS stimulation of the ventromedial prefrontal cortex. Depression-like behaviors were assessed with the sucros

Focused low-intensity pulsed ultrasound enhances bone regeneration in rat calvarial bone defect through enhancement of cell proliferation.

A number of studies have reported the therapeutic potential of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) for induction of bone repair. This study investigated whether bone regeneration might be enhanced by application of focused LIPUS to selectively stimulate fractured calvarial bone. To accomplish this, bone defects were surgically created in the middle of the skull of rats that were subsequently exposed to focused LIPUS. Bone regeneration was assessed by repeated computed tomography imaging after the operation, as well as histologic analysis with calcein, hematoxylin and eosin and proliferatin

The effects of some physical factors on the production of hyperthermia by ultrasound in neoplastic tissues.

A one-dimensional and a three-dimensional computer model have been built in order to study the importance of blood flow and ultrasonic absorption in tissues during local hyperthermia. The decreased blood flow in the interior of certain tumours and possibly the increased ultrasonic absorption of the malignant tissue in some cases may cause selectively higher temperatures inside the tumours though the heat input is the same as in the surrounding tissues. Also, the vasodilation of blood vessels in normal tissues as a response to heat causes a therapeutically useful temperature difference. These b

Clinical efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle knife therapy for carpal tunnel syndrome: A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided needle-knife therapy has emerged as a widely adopted and clinically effective intervention for carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), demonstrating significant therapeutic outcomes in clinical practice. However, there is currently a notable lack of systematic reviews and meta-analyses evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of ultrasound-guided needle-knife therapy in the management of CTS. Systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of ultrasound-guided needle-knife therapy in improving CTS symptoms, wrist function, nerve conduction, ultrasonic detection i

Effect of an extraoral scavenging device on eliminating droplets and aerosols generated in ultrasonic supragingival scaling: A randomised clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Ultrasonic scaling is extensively applied as part of the initial therapy for periodontal diseases, which has been restricted since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic due to droplets and aerosols generated by ultrasonic devices. An extraoral scavenging device (EOS) was designed for diminishing droplets and aerosols in dental clinics. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effect of EOS on eliminating droplets and aerosols during ultrasonic supragingival scaling. METHODS: This single-blinded, randomised controlled clinical trial enrolled 45 patients with generalised perio

Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound Neuromodulation of the Hypoglossal Nerve for the Treatment of Sleep Apnea: An Animal Study.

Electrical stimulation of the hypoglossal nerve is an established therapy for obstructive sleep apnea, as activation of tongue muscles helps maintain airway patency during sleep. However, surgical implantation of electrodes carries inherent risks and limits broader application. In this study, we investigated a non-invasive approach using low-intensity pulsed ultrasound neuromodulation to stimulate the hypoglossal nerve and evaluated its effect on tongue muscle activity and upper-airway function. A 1-MHz ultrasound transducer was applied to the cervical region of anesthetized mice to deliver ac
