METHODS: Altogether, 13 patients with onychomycosis, aged 25-78 years, most with involvement of the matrix region, were treated. A solution of 1% fluconazole and 20% urea in a mixture of ethanol and water was applied once daily, at bedtime.
RESULTS: In four patients there was complete resolution of the condition; four patients who had involvement of one nail only demonstrated a 90% improvement. Renal inner medullary (IM) urea transporter expression was examined in rats with bilateral (BUO) or unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO). Selective arteriocatheterization with urea injection was administered to 36 cases of lingual angiocavernoma. There were 20 males and 16 females, ranging in age from 6 to 18 years with an average of 12 years. Two to five mililiters of 40% urea were injected once a day for 10-15 days as a course of treatment, 29 cases (80.6%) were cured in one course of treatment. The other 7 cases (19.4%) were cured in the 2nd course of treatment. The results suggest that selective arteriocatheterization with urea injection is a safe, convenient and effective technique in the treatment of ingual angiocavernoma.

We studied the effect of urea, glycerol, and mannitol on basilar and labyrinthine arteries of dogs in vitro by use of tension recording methods. When the tissue was exposed to urea or glycerol, temporary relaxation of smooth muscles was initially observed, but was followed by gradually increasing contraction. With mannitol, relaxation of the smooth muscles remained stable as long as mannitol existed in the bathing solution. Our experience with nitrogen-free analog therapy of these disorders indicates that these compounds are adequate nutritional supplements which are non-toxic and which promote mental and somatic growth. They prevent or reduce hyperammonemia for varying periods of time in three of these disorders, but as yet have not prevented hyperammonemic coma and death in infants with complete enzyme deficiencies. A new method of mid-trimester termination of pregnancy is described in which intra-amniotic urea was used. The mean interval between intra-amniotic injection and abortion was 59 hours and the mean length of hospital stay six days; the feto-maternal haemorrhage incidence was one out of 10 cases, which compares favourably with other methods. No complications have yet been encountered.

Investigations using ammonium citrate-(15)N and urea-(15)N showed that children in the acute stage of kwashiorkor and marasmus receiving a diet of adequate protein content retained a considerable percentage of the label from both compounds. Excretion of both total (15)N and urea-(15)N was subnormal and elimination was virtually completed 36 hr after administration of the isotope.
