Dumbbell-Shaped Giant Vesical Calculus Extending into the Urethra in a Female.

Bladder calculi occur predominantly in men, and their incidence is very low in females. Female urethral calculi are even rarer and are usually associated with anatomical or pathological abnormalities. This case report describes a female patient with a giant calculus extending from the urinary bladder into the urethra, crossing the bladder neck. The patient had a three-year history of lower urinary tract symptoms before diagnosis. She was presented with acute pyelonephritis on the left side, bilateral hydronephrosis due to reflux, and recurrent urinary tract infections. An emergency cystostomy

A Giant Urethral Calculus.

Urethral calculi are rare forms of urolithiasis. Majority of the calculi are migratory from urinary bladder or upper urinary tract. Primary urethral calculi usually occur in presence of urethral stricture or diverticulum. In this article we report a case of a giant posterior urethral calculus measuring 7x3x2 cm in a 47 years old male. Patient presented with acute retention of urine which was preceded by burning micturition and dribbling of urine for one week. The calculus was pushed in to the bladder through the cystoscope and was removed by suprapubic cystolithotomy.

Urethral calculi: a review.

The diagnosis and management of 19 patients treated for urethral calculi over a 16-year period are reviewed. All were males, had a median age of 20 years, and urinary retention was the most common presenting symptom. Thirteen (68%) had anterior urethral calculi; 14 (74%) had anatomic alterations of the urethra; and 12 (80%) of the patients who had urine culture had urinary infection. External urethrotomy and open cystolithotomy were the methods used for the removal of calculi in most instances.

Renal calculi in primary hyperaldosteronism.

Increased urinary calcium (Ca++) excretion and the presence of negative Ca++ balance is well documented in primary hyperaldosteronism. However, renal calculi as a major manifestation of this disorder has not previously been described. This report describes a patient who presented with renal calculi in association with primary hyperaldosteronism. We believe that primary hyperaldosteronism was a major pathogenetic factor in the formation of renal calculi since the increased urinary excretion of Ca++ and uric acid noted at onset declined following a short-term spironolactone administration and re

Urolithiasis associated with urogenital tuberculosis. Clinical and mineralogical aspects.

Of 628 patients with bacteriologically or histologically proven urogenital tuberculosis (UGT) treated from 1960 to 1985. 126 patients (20.1%) had additional urinary tract infection and 66 patients (10.5%) developed urolithiasis. In these 66 patients a simultaneous urinary tract infection occurred in 29 cases (43.9%). Twenty-eight calculi were analyzed by a combined crystal-optical and x-ray-diffraction method. A high incidence of struvite/carbonate apatite calculi (11/28) as well as of calcium phosphate calculi (6/28) was found. The texture of 15 calculi was investigated on thin sections by po

Ammonium acid urate crystal formation in adult North American stone-formers.

Although ammonium acid urate (AAU) stones are endemic in Asia, pure AAU calculi have almost disappeared from industrialized countries and clinical pathophysiologic relevance of sporadic stones containing AAU crystals is currently unknown. We reviewed 1,396 crystallographic stone analyses performed in our institution over a 10-year period. Prevalence of stones containing AAU crystals and predominantly AAU stones were 3.1% and 0.2%, respectively. In more than two thirds of cases, AAU crystals represented less than 10% of stone crystal composition. No pure AAU stone was found. According to crysta

Urinary bowel stone: calculus formation in a repurposed small intestine - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Urinary diversion with an ileal conduit is associated with an increased risk of urinary tract calculi, driven by metabolic disturbances, recurrent infections, urinary stasis, and foreign bodies. Although stone formation is a known complication, calculi developing around migrated surgical material remain infrequently reported. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old male patient with a history of radical cystectomy and ileal conduit formation for invasive urothelial carcinoma presented with flank pain and urinary tract infection four years after surgery. Morphological analysis of two spo

Primary vaginal stones.

Calculi composed of urinary salts rarely occur outside the urinary tract. In female subjects such calculi occuring in the vagina are uncommon, with only 26 cases reported thus far. These stones may be primary or secondary. Primary stones are formed in the vagina owing to the deposition of urinary salts as a result of continuous urinary leakage into the vagina. They have been described in association with urinary leakage caused by vesicovaginal fistulas, urethrovaginal fistulas, an ectopic vaginal ureter in a 7-year-old child and incontinence owing to a neurogenic bladder. A secondardy vaginal

Glucosuria associated with renal calculi in Asian small-clawed otters.

Urine from one female and 2 male Asian small-clawed otters (Aonyx cinerea) with bilateral renal calculi, one female with unilateral calculi, and one nonaffected male were evaluated for abnormal urinary crystalloid excretion. One otter with bilateral renal calculi had cystic calculi composed of calcium oxalate monohydrate and dihydrate. The 2 affected males were littermates, as were the 2 affected females, but the 2 litters were from different parents. At the time of the study, the otters did not have clinical signs of disease. Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy in children: experience with the multifunctional lithotripter MFL 5000.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) has been proved to be an effective method of treating upper urinary tract calculi. However, there is little experience with the use of this approach in pediatric urolithiasis, especially for lower urinary tract calculi. Nine children, aged 1-18 years, were treated here with urolithiasis in the renal pelvis, lower ureter and bladder, using Dornier MFL 5000. A polystyrene plate was used to protect small children from chest damage. Prone position was routinely used to treat lower ureteral and vesical calculi, thus avoiding bony pelvis blockage of shock

The incidence and location of prostatic calculi on noncontrast computed tomography images in patients with renal calculi.

In this study, the incidence and location of prostatic calculi on noncontrast abdominal computed tomography (NCACT) images of patients with and without renal stones were investigated. Between 2006 and 2013, NCACT images were taken of 133 patients treated for renal stones (Group I) and of 100 age-matched control patients with putative urinary stone disease (Group II) in our clinic. The incidence and location of prostatic calculi on these images were determined. The location of prostatic calculus was classified as type A if they were located in the main prostatic ducts, and type B if they were l

The role of ultrasound in initial evaluation of renal colic.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the use of ultrasound in the initial evaluation of renal colic. We studied prospectively 21 patients referred for radiographic evaluation for renal colic from January 1998 through April 1998. All sonographic studies were performed with real-time sector scanner (Kertz, Compeson 410 using 3.5 MHz Probe). Our sonographic criteria for a positive examination consisted of the visualization of urinary tract calculus and/or unilateral hydronephrosis with or without ureterectasis. The presence of urinary calculi was proven in 18 out of 21 patients (85%). The a…

Risk factors for developing renal stones in inflammatory bowel disease.

OBJECTIVE: To correlate renal calculi and other clinical factors with urinary biochemical analytes in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, and to investigate the relative importance of hyperoxaluria (associated with fat malabsorption) or reduced stone inhibitors in the development of calculi in these patients. PATIENTS, SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Samples were obtained from 25 patients with Crohn's disease (CD), 15 with ulcerative colitis (UC) and 17 normal subjects (controls). Evidence for the presence of renal calculi was obtained from plain films, ultrasonography or intravenous urography. U

Urethral calculus with a recurrent acute urinary retention in a male child aged 11 years: A case report.

Urolithiasis is the presence of a stone anywhere in the urinary tract, it is commonly seen in adult patients and rare in children, especially when it is associated with acute urinary retention. In children, history is not suggestive and not specific; diagnosis is made by exclusion, and imaging studies often get the findings as incidental. In this case, the clinical presentation made early diagnosis quite difficult. The management of urethral calculi varies according to the site, size, associated urethral pathology, and available resources. It becomes an emergency when it causes acute urinary o
