PURPOSE: The most frequent complication of surgical hemorrhoidectomy is urinary retention. This study evaluates the incidence of urinary retention in a series of patients undergoing surgical hemorrhoidectomy in an ambulatory setting.
METHODS: The records of all patients undergoing anorectal surgical operative procedures during the calendar year 1990 were reviewed, with particular emphasis on urinary retention and other postoperative complications.

Acute urinary retention in two adolescent girls with hematometrocolpos caused by imperforate hymen are reported. The accumulation of the menstrual blood in the vagina and uterus may form a mechanical effect on the urethra and bladder and lead to the obstructive urinary symptoms. Hymenotomy created individually by CO2 laser and cruciate incision was performed. The two patients were discharged on the same day after operation and made an uneventful recovery.

We report on two adolescent girls with imperforate hymen that had presented clinically as urinary retention. In the second case described herein, hydrocolpos could have resulted from the imperforate hymen and might have caused the congenital hydronephrosis incorrectly diagnosed during the neonatal period and childhood as such.

A total of 86 consecutive patients who presented to the accident and emergency department with acute urinary retention due to prostatomegaly required catheterisation; 56 received suprapubic catheters and 30 were catheterised urethrally. Cauda equina syndrome (CES) although uncommon, is a very serious condition, which should be diagnosed as soon as possible. Urinary dysfunction following a lumbosacral trauma is a key for the physician to consider CES as the most probable diagnosis. Up to 62% of CES patients report a recent episode of trauma. Behçet's disease (BD) is a multisystemic inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology. Neurologic involvement is known to be the most devastating feature of BD. The frequency and types of neurologic involvement in the pediatric age group are not clear, and the available information is limited to case reports. Acute urinary retention (AUR) in females is a rare condition (annual incidence 3-7/100,000/year). In the past AUR was considered to be of psychogenic origin. Today diagnostic tools have improved and aetiologic factors for AUR are more easily diagnosed and managed. Causes of AUR can be of infectious, pharmacological, neurological, anatomical, myopathic and functional origin. We report a case of a woman aged 34 who presented with AUR caused by Lyme borreliosis. The patient fully recovered after intravenous antibiotic treatment and micturition returned to the habitual condition.
