Understanding the Predictors that Contribute to Liberian Health Care Workers Feeling Protected From Ebola While at Work.

OBJECTIVE: To assess Liberian health care workers' feelings around safety in returning to work in the setting of the Ebola virus disease outbreak of 2014-2015 after receiving infection prevention and control (IPC) training. METHODS: Academic Consortium Combating Ebola in Liberia (ACCEL) training surveys were done at 21 public, Liberian hospitals to understand health care workers' attitudes surrounding Ebola and whether they felt safe while at work based on multiple factors. Logistic regression was used for analysis. RESULTS: We found that health care workers feeling safe at work during the E

Patient-centeredness and endometriosis: Definition, measurement, and current status.

The patient-centeredness of care is important for health care quality, especially because it was recently associated with health-related quality of life, which is increasingly being recognized as the ultimate outcome parameter of health care. Therefore, insight into the definition, measurement, and current status of the patient-centeredness of clinics is important for all health care professionals caring for patients with endometriosis. The definition of patient-centered endometriosis care is based on research into the most common preferences, needs, and values of patients with endometriosis a

The Value of Healthcare in the United States: Changes in Lifetime Spending and Health-Adjusted Life Expectancy, 1996 to 2016.

OBJECTIVES: We build on research of Cutler et al on the value of healthcare spending using a period life-expectancy framework. We use the framework to track health-adjusted life expectancy (HALE) and lifetime spending for all ages, show the value of improvements in healthcare, and demonstrate the contribution of expanding research to the full age range. METHODS: We used population-level results on mortality and years lived with disability from the 2019 Global Burden of Disease, Injuries, and Risk Factor Study and spending from the 2016 Disease Expenditure study. We used cause replacement meth

Incentives and factors impacting costs in the surgical management of carotid disease.

OBJECTIVE: With the proliferation of different carotid interventions, there is a need to understand the costs and reimbursements for different procedures and what perioperative factors drive cost. We evaluated the charges and reimbursements for carotid endarterectomies (CEAs) and transcervical carotid artery revascularization (TCAR) across surgical and payer groups. METHODS: We conducted a single-institution retrospective cohort study, from January 1, 2014, to July 1, 2025. Using Epic Systems reporting tools, procedural charges, reimbursements (hospital and professional), and patient characte

Evaluating Surgeon-influenced Factors for Total Knee Arthroplasty Value-based Reimbursement.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical outcome measures used under value-based reimbursement models require risk stratification of patient demographics and medical history. Only certain perioperative patient factors may be influenced by the surgeon. The study evaluated surgeon-influenced modifiable factors associated with achieving literature-defined KOOS score thresholds to serve as the foundation of the newly established alternative payment models for total knee arthroplasties (TKA). METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed a consecutive cohort of 4,324 patients undergoing TKA. Surgeon-influenced modifiable ri

Editorial Commentary: Social Determinants of Health Influence the Success of Shoulder Rotator Cuff Repair Outcomes: When You Do Everything Right, Yet Things Still Go Wrong.

Our ability to perform a technically sound surgery is not sufficient to ensure patients have an excellent clinical outcome. Social determinants of health disparities (SDHDs) profoundly impact health equality. Health disparities that exist in the United States are risk factors for inferior patient-reported outcomes and result in greater complication rates following rotator cuff repair surgery. The presence of SDHDs was associated with an increased risk of revision, stiffness, emergency department visits, medical complications, and costs. Economic and educational SDHDs were associated with the g

Evidence-based design of vaccine hesitancy information resources for health care providers.

BACKGROUND: The University of Florida Health Science Center Libraries (HSCL) sought to address the increasing challenge of vaccine hesitancy during the COVID-19 pandemic by developing evidence-based information resources for health care providers. To do this, HSCL librarians assessed the vaccine hesitancy information needs of local health care providers to design a resource that could be used to support conversations with vaccine hesitant patients at the point of care. CASE PRESENTATION: A team of six librarians, supported by student research assistants, conducted interviews with 20 health ca

Current State and Future Direction of Postpartum Hemorrhage Risk Assessment.

In the United States, postpartum hemorrhage is a leading preventable cause of maternal mortality and morbidity. To reduce morbidity from postpartum hemorrhage, risk assessment is an important starting point for informing decisions about risk management and hemorrhage prevention. Current perinatal care guidelines from the Joint Commission recommend that all patients undergo postpartum hemorrhage risk assessment at admission and after delivery. Three maternal health organizations-the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative, AWHONN, and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologis

Conditional cash transfers to improve use of health facilities by mothers and newborns in conflict affected countries, a prospective population based intervention study from Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: The effects of conditional cash transfer (CCT) programs on maternal and child health (MCH) service use in conflicted affected countries such as Afghanistan are not known. METHODS: We conducted a non-randomised population based intervention study in six Afghanistan districts from December 2016 to December 2017. Six control districts were purposively matched. Women were eligible to be included in the baseline and endline evaluation surveys if they had given birth to one or more children in the last 12 months. The intervention was a CCT program including information, education, commu

Catchment area and cancer population health research through a novel population-based statewide database: a scoping review.

BackgroundPopulation-based linked datasets are vital to generate catchment area and population health research. The novel Cancer Information and Population Health Resource (CIPHR) links statewide cancer registry data, public and private insurance claims, and provider- and area-level data, representing more than 80% of North Carolina's large, diverse population of individuals diagnosed with cancer. This scoping review of articles that used CIPHR data characterizes the breadth of research generated and identifies further opportunities for population-based health research.MethodsArticles publishe

Enhancing Patient Safety: The Role of Interdisciplinary Teams in Reducing Blood Culture Contamination.

BACKGROUND: Blood cultures are vital to diagnostic workups among many hospitalized patients, providing valuable information about bloodstream infections (BSIs), which cause roughly 250 000 deaths annually between North America and Europe. Despite advances in health care, blood culture contamination remains a substantial problem, with deleterious effects on patient mortality, patient and hospital costs, and microbial resistance. This article reviews the repercussions of blood culture contamination on the health care system and delineates evidence-based strategies to decrease contamination rates

Curriculum Approaches to Strengthen Public Health-Primary Care Collaboration: Northwest Leadership Institute, 2020-2024.

We describe a novel curriculum designed to build capacity for public health and primary care collaboration. Since the Northwest Public Health & Primary Care Leadership Institute began in 2020, 119 participants have completed the seven-month hybrid curriculum. Application of knowledge and skills learned to workplace or community projects was reported by 84% of participants. Case-based learning and the critical friends group were valued learning methodologies. A cross-sectoral leadership curriculum can promote public health and primary care integration. (Am J Public Health. 2026;116(4):443-446.

Resource use, costs and quality of end-of-life care: observations in a cohort of elderly Australian cancer decedents.

BACKGROUND: The last year of life is one of the most resource-intensive periods for people with cancer. Very little population-based research has been conducted on end-of-life cancer care in the Australian health care setting. The objective of this program is to undertake a series of observational studies examining resource use, costs and quality of end-of-life care in a cohort of elderly cancer decedents using linked, routinely collected data. METHODS/DESIGN: This study forms part of an ongoing cancer health services research program. The cohorts for the end-of-life research program comprise

Valuing the Dental Caries Utility Index in Australia.

INTRODUCTION: The Dental Caries Utility Index (DCUI) is a new oral health-specific health state classification system for adolescents, consisting of 5 domains: pain/discomfort, difficulty eating food/drinking, worried, ability to participate in activities, and appearance. Each domain has 4 response levels. This study aims to generate an Australian-specific utility algorithm for the DCUI. METHODS: An online survey was conducted using a representative sample of the adult Australian general population. The discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to elicit the preferences on 5 domains. Then, th

Evaluating Postoperative Follow-Up in Total Hip and Knee Arthroplasty: A Six-Year Review of Current Procedural Terminology Code 99024 and the Role of Comorbidity in Visit Frequency.

BACKGROUND: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services assumes two postoperative follow-up visits (PFUs) occur within the 90-day global period after total joint arthroplasty, forming the basis for reimbursement. However, recent concerns suggest this may underestimate actual postoperative care, raising questions about potential overvaluation of these procedures. This study evaluated the frequency of PFUs during the 90-day global period for total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and total hip arthroplasty (THA) and to identify at-risk patients for three or more PFUs during the global period. METHODS
