Vegetation expansion in the subnival Hindu Kush Himalaya.

The mountain systems of the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) are changing rapidly due to climatic change, but an overlooked component is the subnival ecosystem (between the treeline and snow line), characterized by short-stature plants and seasonal snow. Basic information about subnival vegetation distribution and rates of ecosystem change are not known, yet such information is needed to understand relationships between subnival ecology and water/carbon cycles. We show that HKH subnival ecosystems cover five to 15 times the area of permanent glaciers and snow, highlighting their eco-hydrological impo

Vegetable fibre in an infected ovarian dermoid cyst.

Tubo-ovarian abscesses (TOAs) are inflammatory masses involving the fallopian tube, ovary and occasionally other adjacent pelvic organs. A 32-year-old woman with no significant medical history presented with a chief complaint of lower abdominal pain. Initial CT of the abdomen was suggestive of a colon abscess; however, a repeat CT suggested a TOA. The left ovary was densely adherent to the left pelvic sidewall and the rectosigmoid colon. The content of the ovary was consistent with a dermoid and suspected of superinfection. Pathological examination of the tissue revealed normal ovarian cortica

Effect of vegetation on cutaneous leishmaniasis in Paraná, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is endemic in the state of Paraná, Brazil. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed at analysing the influence of the remaining native vegetation on the prevalence of CL in Paraná. METHODS: Global testing was used for spatial autocorrelation along with simultaneous autoregressive model (SAR). The regression was based on the CL coefficient (cases/100,000 inhabitants) as a function of the percentage of natural vegetation cover, altitude, total number of cases, and spatial density (SD) per km2; the location data of the Paraná state municipalities and the detection co

Treatment of a Pregnant Patient in a Persistent Vegetative State.

BACKGROUND: Brain injury leading to a persistent vegetative state during pregnancy involves difficult medical and ethical decisions. CASE: A 21-year-old multigravid woman entered a persistent vegetative state at 20 1/7 weeks of gestation after cardiac arrest with postanoxic brain injury from a suspected drug overdose. The clinical disciplines responsible for her case formed a collaborative care plan involving ventilator, nutrition, and medication support of the mother and regular fetal monitoring and ultrasound testing. A planned delivery by cesarean at term resulted in a good neonatal outcom

Vegetable Granuloma in Pindborg's Tumor: A Rare Encounter.

Vegetable granuloma (VG) or pulse granuloma is an enigmatic lesion in terms of its designated nomenclature and etiopathogenesis. It is less often reported in the walls of inflammatory and developmental odontogenic cysts. It can present different histological characteristics, possibly related to the length of time in the tissue and its location. Due to its deceptive appearance, it can often mislead the pathologists. Here, we report an unusual encounter of VG in a Pindborg's tumor, which is the first of its kind in the literature.

Intrathecal administration of GABA agonists in the vegetative state.

Gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA) is an inhibitor neurotransmitter that plays many important roles in the central nervous system. Because the half-life time of GABA is very short in vivo, GABA itself is not used for clinical practice. An analogue of GABA, baclofen, is an agonist of GABA-B receptor, and has very strong antispastic effect by acting to the posterior horn of the spinal cord. However, baclofen poorly crosses through the blood brain barrier, and the antispastic effect is modest when administered orally. Therefore, direct continuous infusion of small doses of baclofen into the cerebrosp

[Vegetative pyoderma gangrenosum associated with renal failure].

A case report was presented in which a patient developed vegetative pyoderma gangrenosum that was concomitant with acute renal failure; this led to the critical condition of the patient. He was initially treated with systemic antibiotics because his clinical picture was considered to be pyodermitis, but the response was unsatisfactory. After being treated with levamizol and alfa interferon, an improvement in his general condition and skin lesions was observed. Then surgical exeresis was successfully performed, with skin self-grafting in the face and penis lesions. Pyoderma gangrenosum lesions

[Vegetative functions characteristics in patients with chronic gastritis].

Basing on examination of 311 patients with chronic gastritis (CG), three clinicopathogenetic variants of the disease course were determined. Variant 1 is characterized by superficial involvement of the gastric mucosa, normal or hyperactive secretory function, normokinetic motor type, dominating parasympathetic vegetative tonicity and reactions of the parasympathetic type, rare segmental disorders, absolute hyperhistaminemia. Variant 2 is characterized by moderate atrophy of the gastric glands, secretory and motor hypofunction, unaffected vegetative status, normohistaminemia. Variant 3 runs wit

Behçet's disease presenting with a right atrial vegetation.

Behçet's disease (BD) is difficult to diagnose in children because patients often do not have characteristic symptoms and pediatricians have a low awareness of BD. We report on the case of BD in a 12-year-old boy that presented as endocarditis. Prednisolone, started after infective endocarditis had been ruled out, had a dramatic effect. Cardiac involvement in BD and the differential diagnosis of endocarditis are discussed.

Life expectancy of children in a persistent vegetative state.

The persistent vegetative state (PVS) is a state of wakeful unconsciousness occurring in adults and children. Despite preservation of vegetative functions, PVS patients have a shortened life-span, although accurate information concerning this issue remains limited. The survival of children in PVS was examined to determine whether age, etiology of the vegetative state, or type of residence in which the patient lived affected the estimated survival. The data of 155,851 developmentally disabled California state residents were reviewed using the Client Development Evaluation Report (CDER). Criteri

Medical aspects of the persistent vegetative state (1).

This consensus statement of the Multi-Society Task Force summarizes current knowledge of the medical aspects of the persistent vegetative state in adults and children. The vegetative state is a clinical condition of complete unawareness of the self and the environment, accompanied by sleep-wake cycles, with either complete or partial preservation of hypothalamic and brain-stem autonomic functions. In addition, patients in a vegetative state show no evidence of sustained, reproducible, purposeful, or voluntary behavioral responses to visual, auditory, tactile, or noxious stimuli; show no eviden

Tricuspid valve vegetation in a child with periarteritis nodosa.

We report a case of a child who was first seen for acute renal failure and periarteritis nodosa. Angiography findings confirmed this diagnosis. Ultrasound scan revealed large tricuspid valve vegetation, as well as minute vegetation on the right ventricular wall. All vegetation disappeared after 12 months of immunosuppressive therapy. Serology findings for lupus were negative. All clinical and laboratory findings strongly support the hypothesis that this previously undescribed heart involvement is caused by PAN.

Valvar vegetations in the neonate due to fetal endocarditis.

Mass lesions were observed on the tricuspid valve by cross-sectional echocardiography in 5 neonates, 4 of whom presented with fetal distress. Four went on to develop severe respiratory distress, 3 from meconium aspiration and 1 from hyaline membrane disease, with 2 deaths despite intensive treatment. Autopsy confirmed meconium aspiration pneumonia. Sterile, unorganised vegetations were seen on the tricuspid valve (and in 1 infant the mitral valve too). Perinatal factors such as hypoxia, haemodynamic and coagulation disturbances may have contributed to the formation of the vegetations and may r

Clonidine treatment in vegetative dysfunction--experimental rationales.

The present paper attempts to place the clinical use of clonidine in gynecology in a broadened perspective against the most recent advances in neuropsychopharmacology. From this review emerges the concept that clonidine, by means of its action in the central nervous system, probably affects mechanisms of crucial significance in psychosomatic symptomatology, involving the balance between attention to the external versus the internal environment. Since brain NE systems such as the one originating in the LC influence or reach vast regions of the CNS and not only cardiovascular centres, any malfun
