[Vena cava superior syndrome in total parenteral nutrition. Vena cava superior thrombosis caused by a central venous catheter].

Two patients developed superior vena cava syndrome following total parenteral nutrition through a central venous catheter. Infection may have contributed to the development of the superior vena cava thromboses. In one patient a "sleeve thrombus" probably caused multiple pulmonary embolisms after the catheter was withdrawn. The other patient had a mural thrombosis with complete occlusion of the superior vena cava. The author emphasizes the importance of early diagnosis and correct treatment in order to reduce the high mortality rate due to this serious complication to central venous catheters.

[Double superior vena cava with drainage of the right superior vena cava into the left auricle. Presentation as a cerebral abscess in an adult].

A 44 year old man presented with a cerebral abscess, the location of which suggested a septicaemic origin. Although the patient was not cyanosed, a cardiological work-up was requested to exclude a right-to-left shunt. This showed a double abnormality of the systemic venous drainage: presence of an abnormal left superior vena cava draining into the coronary sinus and of a right superior vena cava draining into the left atrium. These two vena cava intercommunicated by anastomoses. Angiography in the right superior vena cava after occlusion by balloon catheter at its junction with the left atrium

Persistent left superior vena cava and right superior vena cava drainage into the left atrium without arterial hypoxemia.

A 46 year old patient who presented with an acute myocardial infarction was discovered to have a systemic venous communication with the left heart during attempted insertion of a pulmonary flotation catheter. There was no evidence of cyanosis or systemic arterial desaturation. A right superior vena cava that emptied into the right superior pulmonary vein and a persistent left superior vena cava draining into the coronary sinus were confirmed pathologically after death related to a brain abscess. The embryology, physiology and noninvasive diagnostic approach to this unique venous anomaly are di

Primary Seminoma Arising in the Superior Vena Cava.

A 43-year-old man presented with a 1-month history of progressive facial and neck swelling without an identifiable trigger. He was diagnosed with superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS). A further chest CT showed an irregular low-density mass within the superior vena cava (SVC), and 18 F-FDG PET/CT showed significant tracer uptake. Malignancy was suspected. Among the tumor markers tested, only NSE was mildly elevated (33.4 ng/mL, normal range, <7 ng/mL). Subsequently, the patient underwent resection of the SVC mass combined with SVC replacement; the final pathologic diagnosis was classic seminoma.

Failed Retrieval of an Inferior Vena Cava Filter.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) filters are devices used to lower the risk of critical pulmonary embolisms in patients with current deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or a high risk of developing such. These devices are used especially when there are contraindications to anticoagulants or when conservative therapy has failed. Typically, IVC filters are temporary and can be retrieved upon improvement in the patient's clotting status.  This case presents a 75-year-old female whose IVC filter retrieval failed. Once cleared by both cardiology and orthopedics, the decision was made to retrieve the IVC filter. Fir

Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava: case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Leiomyosarcomas of the inferior vena cava are exceedingly rare tumors, presenting diagnostic dilemmas due to their nonspecific clinical features. This case report aims to shed light on the challenges associated with diagnosing and managing such tumors, emphasizing the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. This article uses Surgical CASe Report (SCARE) 2023 criteria as a framework to sort out a case report in order[1]. CASE PRESENTATION: The authors present a case of leiomyosarcoma of the inferior vena cava in a patient presenting with abdominal pain. Initial

[An unusual presentation of superior vena cava syndrome].

Superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a clinical picture resulting from the obstruction of superior vena cava. SVCS usually causes symptoms and signs related to the head, the neck, the upper extremities and the upper thorax. We report a case of unusual clinical presentation of SVCS in a 25-year-old male patient who suffered from lymphoblastic lymphoma in childhood. Clinicians should be aware of abdominal wall presentations of SVCS especially in patients having undergone central venous catheterization, even years before. SVCS could be an emergency situation, requiring specific treatment or cont

Management of malignant superior vena cava syndrome.

Superior vena cava (SVC) syndrome occurs due to obstructed blood flow through the SVC. It can present clinically on a spectrum, between asymptomatic and life-threatening emergency. Patients commonly report a feeling of fullness in the head, facial, neck and upper extremity edema, and dyspnea. On imaging, patients commonly have superior mediastinal widening and pleural effusion. The majority of cases are due to malignant causes, with non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer, and lymphoma the most commonly associated malignancies. When evaluating patients, a complete staging workup is

Dysphagia as a manifestation in superior vena cava syndrome.

The differential diagnosis of dysphagia and dyspnoea with cervicofacial oedema is wide and includes diseases with variable prognosis that may require an urgent approach. This article presents the case of a middle-aged man who came to the emergency room referring to the symptoms described, with a history of central venous access established approximately 4 years ago. The patient was diagnosed with superior vena cava syndrome and treated with anticoagulants and removal of the catheter. After a week of admission with anticoagulation, the patient clinically improved with a considerable decrease in

Intravascular leiomyomatosis with extension to the inferior vena cava.

Intravascular leiomyomatosis (IVL) is a rare benign smooth muscle neoplasm growing within the pelvic venous system, often with caval and intracardiac extension. It frequently coexists with uterine leiomyomas or occurs in women with a history of myomectomy or hysterectomy. IVL is often asymptomatic until intracardiac extension occurs, and carries a risk of sudden death, necessitating timely diagnosis and management. We present a case of IVL diagnosed on hysterectomy specimen with extension to the inferior vena cava found on follow-up imaging. The patient underwent complete resection with multid

Primary Ewings Sarcoma of the Inferior Vena Cava.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcomas of vascular origin are rare. A case of Ewings sarcoma of Inferior Vena Cava [IVC] is reported here. REPORT: A 36-year-old lady presented with a 6-month history of bilateral pitting lower limb swelling and 1-month history of vaginal bleeding. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the thorax and abdomen revealed a soft tissue lesion extending from the cavoatrial junction to the junction of the middle hepatic vein with IVC. She underwent IVC resection (suprahepatic) and left lateral hepatectomy with dacron graft reconstruction. The pathology was suggestive of Ewings sar

Leiomyosarcoma Invading the Vena Cava: A Case Report.

Leiomyosarcoma is an aggressive soft tissue tumor originating from smooth muscle cells typically of the uterus, gastrointestinal, or genitourinary system. The most common site of leiomyosarcoma of soft tissue is the retroperitoneum, accounting for 50% of all cases. The majority of patients are asymptomatic, which may be due to the large retroperitoneal cavity. However, when symptoms do occur, they are vague in nature. The most common growth pattern is an entirely extravascular mass. We are presenting an interesting case of a 65-year-old lady, who was referred to our hospital as a case of large

Duplication of the inferior vena cava: a case series.

The inferior vena cava (IVC) may develop abnormally because of its complex embryogenesis. An understanding of congenital variants such as duplication of the IVC is essential for clinical interventions, particularly those performed by surgeons and radiologists. We herein describe five patients who were diagnosed with duplication of the IVC by computed tomography or angiography and summarize their imaging and clinical features. All five patients were men aged 46 to 78 years. Two of the patients had pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis and were treated by placement of an IVC filter and cat

Imaging in traumatic injury to the inferior vena cava.

Inferior vena cava (IVC) injury is a rare but serious consequence of trauma. It presents with high scores on trauma assessment scales and is often life threatening. Factors that contribute to poor survival include delay and difficulty in diagnosis due to non-specific clinical features. As it is a relatively rare entity, imaging in IVC injury is not well described in the literature. As radiologists, it is vital that features of potential IVC injury are recognised promptly and findings relayed to the treating clinician in a timely manner to improve survival and reduce the risk of possible compli
