Four patients with viscero-atrial heterotaxic syndrome underwent a right heart bypass operation. 2 patients had right isomerism, and two had left isomerism. 3 patients had common atrio-ventricular canal, three had double outlet right ventricle, one had mitral valve hypoplasia, and one had double inlet right ventricle. All patients had anomalous systemic or pulmonary venous drainage. Redirection of systemic venous drainage was accomplished by total cavo-pulmonary shunt (TCPS) (2 patients), atrial baffle (1 patient), and intraatrial conduit (1 patient). In one patient underwent TCPS, regurgitant

Acute complications of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) of the lower extremities include pulmonary embolism and venous ischemia. Delayed complications include a spectrum of debilitating symptoms referred to as postthrombotic syndrome (PST). Anticoagulation therapy is recognized as the mainstay of therapy in acute DVT. However, there are few data to suggest any major beneficial effect on PTS, which is thought to be mediated by valve damage and/or occlusive chronic thrombus and venous scarring. Endovascular catheter-directed thrombolysis techniques with pharmacologic thrombolytic agents, used alone or

Chronic venous insufficiency is linked to venous hypertension and forces of shear stress on the endothelium. Venous hypertension depends upon two forces: the weight of a column of blood from the right atrium transmitted through the valveless vena cava and iliac veins to the femoral vein, and pressure generated by contracting skeletal muscles of the leg transmitted through failed perforating veins. When valve failure occurs in superficial axial veins and perforating veins, the venous pressure in the veins and venules of the skin and subcutaneous tissue is raised. The skin changes in chronic ven

BACKGROUND: Venous popliteal aneurysms are a rare but serious disease due to the risk of pulmonary embolism (PE). Aneurysms larger than 20 mm in diameter or with an embolic episode should be treated. The classic surgical technique is the tangential resection of the aneurysm with venorrhaphy, which may raise the risk of recurrence. We report a series of patients treated with a new technique consisting of aneurysmal resection and reconstruction using the axillary vein. The primary objective was to evaluate the patency of the transposed venous graft. The secondary objectives were to study the fea

Right atrial isomerism or left atrial isomerism is frequently diagnosed as situs ambiguous without further discrimination of the specific morbid anatomy. Thirty six cases of right atrial isomerism and seven cases of left atrial isomerism were collected from the records and pathological museum at the National Taiwan University Hospital. There was a necropsy report for 18 cases. In all patients one or more of the following conditions was met: (a) isomeric bronchial anatomy, (b) echocardiographic and angiocardiographic evidence of isomerism, and (c) surgical or necropsy evidence of abnormal atria

Lutembacher's syndrome refers to the rare combination of congenital atrial septal defect and acquired mitral stenosis. It is rarely associated to partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection. This condition is treated surgically by mitral commissurotomy or mitral valve operation with concomitant closure of the atrial septal defect with correction of the abnormal pulmonary venous connection. Percutaneous mitral commissurotomy before surgery can be a therapeutic alternative when mitral valve stenosis is severe and valve anatomy is favourable. The authors bring back the case of a 24 years old ma

A 56-year-old woman was admitted to our department because of congestive heart failure. Chest X-ray showed dextrocardia with situs inversus. The echocardiography revealed severe mitral regurgitation due to prolapse of posterior leaflet and secondary Venography demonstrated the bilateral superior vena cava, huge coronary sinus and hemiazygos continuation with hypoplastic inferior vena cava. Mitral valve regurgitation was repaired by Carpentier's and Burr's technique, and tricuspid valve regurgitation was repaired by Kay's technique. Her postoperative course was uneventful. OBJECTIVE: Failure of deep venous valves and associated reflux leads to the progression of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), culminating in painful, clinically challenging, and costly leg ulcers. Traditional CVI treatments have primarily focused on symptom management, or interventions for superficial veins. This study aimed to show that bioprosthetic valve implantation yields clinically meaningful health improvements and offers a safe and effective treatment for deep venous CVI by addressing the root cause of the condition.

A 58-year-old male patient was admitted with chest pain and was diagnosed with coronary heart disease. He was scheduled for coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) under cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Intraoperative real-time transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) showed that the tricuspid valves were well-aligned and subtle regurgitation. Real-time TEE after separation from CPB showed severe tricuspid regurgitation and prolapsed chordae tendineae. The tricuspid chordae tendineae rupture due to a right atrial venous return cannula. 46 patients underwent surgery for the ascending aorta and the aortic arch using continuous hypothermic retrograde systemic venous perfusion (RSVP). Good cerebral protection has been obtained by this method in most patients including four in whom periods of retrograde perfusion exceeded 90 minutes (the longest 140 min). In first 19 patients retrograde perfusion was performed through conventional caval cannulae, but one of them sustained serious neurological damage despite a relatively short duration of retrograde perfusion probably due to impediment of retrograde flow to the brain with venous v

It is known that parasympathetic nerve stimulation elevates venous pressure in the dog submandibular gland, and that the venous pressure wave is transformed to that of the arterial pulse. The vascular arrangements and histological characteristics of the dog submandibular gland were therefore examined to establish which anatomical structures are responsible for the change in venous pressure during salivation induced by parasympathetic stimulation. The acinar and ductal circulations were found to be arranged in parallel and arteriovenous anastomoses were identified in both. Microsphere injection

The epidural space of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is largely filled by a continuous venous sinus. This venous sinus extends throughout the trunk and tail of the alligator, and is continuous with the dural sinuses surrounding the brain. Segmental spinal veins (sl) link the spinal venous sinus (vs) to the somatic and visceral venous drainage. Some of these sl, like the caudal head vein along the occipital plate of the skull, are enlarged, suggesting more functional linkage. No evidence of venous valves or external venous sphincters was found associated with the vs; the re

Between 1977 and 1986, 185 patients with deep venous thrombosis (117 with acute occlusive and 68 with embolizing deep venous thrombosis) underwent venous thrombectomy with arterio-venous fistula. The early patency rate was 96%, and the perioperative mortality rate, 3.8%. Of the 157 patients in whom extremities were involved, 147 were examined 12-118 months postoperatively (mean 43 +/- 23 months) clinically, by Doppler ultrasound and by light reflexion rheography (LRR). In 49% of the patients, various kinds of swelling or oedema of the involved extremities were present. There were no hemodynami

A palpable venous systolic thrill and murmur at the base of the neck are described as new physical findings in five patients with severe tricuspid regurgitation. In two of these patients, the tricuspid valve had been resected as treatment for infective endocarditis related to intravenous drug abuse. The third patient had severe chronic pulmonary disease with right heart failure. The fourth patient had a complex congenital defect in which the mitral valve served as the venous atrioventricular valve and was severely incompetent. The fifth patient suffered from long-standing rheumatic mitral and

The dissection of 100 external jugular veins in 50 cadavers was the object of this anatomic study. A certain number of notions concerning the afferent veins, the mode of termination and the valvular system of this vessel were defined. 1) Afferent veins. Along its pathway toward the deep venous system, the external jugular vein successively received: the transverse cervical vein in 88 cases (88%), usually opposite the intersection of the external jugular vein with the dorsal border of the sterno- cleidomastoid muscle; the suprascapular vein in 47 cases (47%); the anterior jugular vein in 46 cas

BACKGROUND: Cardiac valve disease is observed in 2.5% of the general population and 10% of the elderly people. Effective pharmacological treatments are currently not available, and patients with severe cardiac valve disease require surgery. PROX1 (prospero-related homeobox transcription factor 1) and FOXC2 (Forkhead box C2 transcription factor) are transcription factors that are required for the development of lymphatic and venous valves. We found that PROX1 and FOXC2 are expressed in a subset of valvular endothelial cells (VECs) that are located on the downstream (fibrosa) side of cardiac val

The post-thrombotic syndrome PTS occurs when a relevant residual thrombus load remains after a deep vein thrombosis and/or the function of the venous valves is disturbed. The knowledge of the different types of PTS generates individualized therapeutic and secondary prophylactic approaches. Immediate compression, movement in compression garments and an effective anticoagulation are crucial for both the prevention and the outcome of post thrombotic syndromes.

A patient with cyanosis in an uncomplicated ostium secundum atrial septal defect without pulmonary hypertension is described. There were no anatomic abnormalities in right-sided cardiac valves or venous return and no evidence of right ventricular hypoplasia or hypertrophy; however, the diastolic pressure curve suggested a decreased compliance. We suggest that this unusual finding may be a result of intrinsically abnormal right ventricular compliance.

Pulmonary venous aneurysm is rare and its etiology is still debated. Some studies have shown that acquired aneurysms are caused by an increase in left atrial pressure and mitral regurgitation. However, few reports have provided direct evidence of this pathology. We present a case of pulmonary venous aneurysm diagnosed using a combination of echocardiography and contrast-enhanced computed tomography with strong evidence for an etiology of severe mitral valve regurgitation. A 24-year-old Chinese man was diagnosed with mitral valve perforation with severe mitral regurgitation caused by infectious

Stenotic immobile valves and other malformations obstruct normal cerebrospinal venous outflow, resulting in reflux flow which combines with the normal outflow to produce standing pressure waves in the internal jugular and other cerebrospinal veins. It is hypothesized that, if the cerebrospinal venous structure between the obstruction and the deep cerebral veins is sufficiently non-compliant, the standing wave will result in bidirectional flow in the fine cerebral veins. Bidirectional flow in the fine veins, over extended periods of time, will cause disorder in the veins' endothelial morphology
