BACKGROUND: Whole-body vibration (WBV) may be a complementary training to standard physical rehabilitation programmes and appears to have potential benefits in the sensorimotor system performance of patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to examine the efficacy of WBV to improve functional performance according to basic activities of daily living (ADL) in neurodegenerative diseases. The aim of this study was to remind Australasian doctors about the importance of vibration as an occupational exposure capable of causing musculoskeletal disease. BACKGROUND: Hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS) is associated with the use of hand-held vibrating tools. Affected workers may experience symptoms of tingling, numbness, loss of grip strength and pain. The authors revealed numerous somatic dysfunctions in vibration disease. The dysfunctions appeared to correlate with the vibration type and to play a role in pathogenesis of pain, tunnel and sensory polyneuropathy syndromes. Between 1988 and 1990, 500 claimants were assessed and considered to have vibration white finger (VWF). 110 inland navigation workers, exposed to vibration and noise, have undergone electronystagmographic examinations. 61.7% subjects have developed disturbances of vestibular organ. The occurrence of those disturbances has been found to vary with the duration of vibration - and - noise exposure i.e. with the employment system. The 24 - hr - system poses a greater risk of vestibular organ disturbances than the 12 - hr - system. The investigation should promote setting - up some certification of the vibration disease in water transport workers.
