In order to assess the human exposure risks from the release of contaminants from water pipes made of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), experiments were carried out by subjecting the PVC pipe material to burning and leaching conditions followed by analysis of the emission and leachate samples. The mutagenicity in Salmonella, strain TA 100, of photoreaction products from chlorinated alkenes and nitrogen dioxide, was studied after a mean reaction time of 40 min with UV-irradiation and an exposure time of 20 hr. Only vinyl chloride (monochloroethene) gave rise to significantly mutagenic photoreaction products. Of the other chloroethenes, 1,1-dichloroethene and tetrachloroethene, but not 1,2-dichloro- or trichloroethene, formed slightly mutagenic products. Bacteriotoxic effects occurred at low doses, especially with tri- and tetrachloroethene.

Analysis of four cases of hemangiosarcoma of the liver and review of the literature indicate that these tumors are either predominantly cystic and fairly well differentiated or are more solid and poorly differentiated. Well-differentiated hemangiosarcomas may resemble peliosis hepatis or other benign conditions. The tumor was associated disseminated intravascular coagulation and fibrinolysis syndrome in one of our cases. One of our patients had received thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) but none seemed to have been exposed to arsenicals or to vinyl chloride.

Seventy-two chemicals were tested for their mutagenic potential in the L5178Y tk+/- mouse lymphoma cell forward mutation assay, using procedures based upon those described by Clive and Spector (Mutat Res 44:269-278, 1975) and Clive et al. Solubility coefficients in blood for benzene, toluene, and xylene were determined as 6.5, 16, and 42 respectively. In lard and olive oil, which were taken to represent human fat, corresponding values were about 450, 1300, and 3900. The coefficient for vinyl chloride in lard and olive oil was 20; the value in blood was too low to be determined by the technique used. Trichloroethylene, used as a marker, was found to have a coefficient in lard of 660, and in olive oil of 710, rather lower values than have been accepted for fat.
