[Anogenital warts: a clinical, pathological and virological study].

The objective of this study was to investigate the possible relationship between the presence of anogenital warts (AGW) in children and the sexual abuse as mode of transmission. Our series includes 8 patients with AGW who were treated in our hospital during the year 2007. A complete physical examination was carried out, including colposcopy or anoscopy, and samples were taken for histopathological examination and human papiloma virus (HPV) subtyping. We considered perinatal transmission as a possible route in two cases. Although sexual abuse was definitively confirmed in only one case, we obse

Virological aspects of Epstein-Barr virus infections.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is usually maintained in an asymptomatic and latent form by the host immune system, and primarily by EBV-specific cytotoxic T cells (CTLs). However, EBV has been linked to several refractory diseases such as EBV-associated hemophagocytic syndrome(EBV-AHS) and chronic active EBV infection (CAEBV). In these ectopic diseases, EBV infects T/NK cells, causing severe immunodeficiency with a very high EBV load. In recent years, the laboratory procedure to assess these types of EBV infections has been improved. In particular, real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been

[Virological, epidemiological and pathogenic aspects of human polyomaviruses].

UNLABELLED: VIROLOGICAL ASPECTS: Human polyomaviruses (BK virus and JC virus), together with simian polyomaviruses (SV40 virus) share 75% of genomic homology. Their in vivo and in vitro genomes vary. Molecular analyses have identified several genotypes, some of which appear related to the development of viral diseases. Genomic modifications of the regulation area might provide the BKv with a pathogenic aspect thus enhancing the induction of tubulo-interstitial nephropathies in renal transplant recipients. EPIDEMIOLOGY: Human polyomaviruses are ubiquitous and exhibit a sero-prevalence of 60 to

[Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy: virological and neuropathological aspects].

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is a subacute demyelinating disease of the central nervous system due to an opportunistic infection by a polyomavirus, most often JC virus, which predominantly infects oligodendrocytes. Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy used to be a rare condition, usually complicating lymphoproliferative diseases. Since the onset of the AIDS epidemic, its incidence has considerably increased and HIV infection has become, by far, the main risk factor for the disease. In AIDS patients, progressive leukoencephalopathy frequently shows atypical clinical and path

Virologic and immunologic aspects of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

From the initial clinical descriptions of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in 1981 to the present time, much has been discovered concerning the epidemiologic factors, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention of this disease. Recent advances in epidemiology have included a better understanding of the occupational risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection after percutaneous exposure (responsible for approximately 0.4 per cent of instances), an appreciation of the potential variability in the time interval between infection and seroconversion (generally on the order of three

Acanthosis nigricans maligna. Clinical and virological investigations.

2 cases of acanthosis nigricans associated with an adenocarcinoma (signet ring cell carcinoma) of the stomach and a metastasizing small-cell carcinoma of unknown origin are reported. In both cases the skin lesions preceded the diagnosis of the carcinoma by months and acanthosis nigricans maligna was suspected by onset and localization of the dermatosis. There was no evidence of a papillomavirus etiology of the warty skin lesions. Virus particles could not be demonstrated either in ultrathin sections or in buffer extracts. Virus-specific DNA was not detectable after CsCL-ethidium bromide gradie

A case of Lassa fever: clinical and virological findings.

Five days after arriving in London from Jos a young Nigerian women developed a severe and prolonged illness that proved to be Lassa fever. Virus was not detected in urine during the first three weeks but then appeared and reached a peak during the sixth week, with continuing excretion for 67 days after the onset of illness. Laboratory investigations showed evidence of extensive tissue damage and disturbance of clotting, but there was no serious bleeding and she eventually made a complete recovery despite a high sustained viraemia and severe liver damage. Convalescent serum was used in treatmen

[Rubella epidemic of 1977 in Turin. Virological studies].

During the outbreak of rubella in Turin in 1977, 1,041 newborns, whose mother's pregnancy coincided with the epidemic, were studied for the elimination of rubella virus through inoculation in primary cultures of African green monkey kidney cells. Additional 10 embryos or fetuses of therapeutic abortion from women with rubella early in pregnancy were studied through cultivation of material of abortion and inoculation in monkey cells. Only one strain was isolated, from the placenta of an embryo whose mother suffered rubella in the 2nd month of pregnancy. The hypothesis is proposed of a particula

[Virological diagnosis of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (author's transl)].

Among 180 patients with proved adenovirus infection of the eye, 144 infections with adenovirus 8 (Ad 8) were found. 11 or 7 patients were infected with Ad 19 or Ad 4 respectively; further 18 cases were associated with 6 other serotypes. The main symptoms of epidemic keratoconjunctivitis (EKC) (pronounced inflammatory swelling of the plica and caruncula, nummular corneal infiltations) are not confined to Ad 8 infections. For the virological diagnosis, a combination of virus isolation and serology is recommended. Virus isolation is mostly successful from conjunctival swabs obtained during the fi

Neurological, electroencephalographic, and virological findings in febrile cheldren.

Investigations were made of 78 febrile children, 53 with fits and 25 without fits. 53% of the children with fits had viral illnesses. Severe fits were commoner in these children than in those with negative viral findings. Permanent neurological damage and prolonged EEG abnormalities were found significantly more often in children with, than in those without, viral disease, whether or not fits had occurred. The long-term implications are discussed. In addition to viral agents already described as causing neurological complications, the following organisms were found in association with central
