Binocular facilitation of cone-specific visual evoked potentials in colour deficiency.

BACKGROUND: Neural compensatory mechanisms have been proposed, which preserve the binocular visual field in glaucoma, as well as cognition in Alzheimer's disease and motor function in Parkinson's disease. It is conceivable that comparable mechanisms operate to preserve function in congenital and/or dystrophic disease. In hereditary colour vision deficiency (CVD), we observed significant facilitation in the amplitude of the binocular cone-specific visual evoked potential (VEP) compared to the monocular amplitude for the cone type corresponding to the CVD. We propose that this finding may reflec

BINOCULAR INTERACTION IN AMBLYOPIA.

The review presents new ideas about developmental mechanisms of amblyopia, which are currently discussed in literature. Objective evidence has accumulated that amblyopia affects both monocular and binocular functions in visual processing. Given the increasing evidence of fundamental and clinical research, it is most likely that binocular dysfunction is primary, and monocular reduction is visual acuity is secondary to this disease. Amblyopia is rather binocular than monocular pathology, and binocular interaction seems to play a critical role in the pathogenesis of strabismic, anisometropic and

Brief daily periods of unrestricted vision preserve stereopsis in strabismus.

PURPOSE: This study examines whether brief periods of binocular vision could preserve stereopsis in monkeys reared with optical strabismus. METHODS: Starting at 4 weeks of age, six infant monkeys were reared with a total of 30 prism diopters base-in split between the eyes. Two of the six monkeys wore prisms continuously, one for 4 weeks and one for 6 weeks. Four of the six monkeys wore prisms but had 2 hours of binocular vision daily, one for 4, one for 6, and two for 16 weeks. Five normally reared monkeys provided control data. Behavioral methods were used to measure spatial contrast sensiti

An investigation of prism adaptation latency.

PURPOSE: The latency of adaptation of the human vergence system to a change in convergence or divergence forced upon it by a prism was investigated in this pilot study. METHODS: Adaptation was stimulated by a 5-s period of binocular vision through a prism of 0 delta, -8 delta, or 8 delta. Immediately thereafter and for a further period of 45 s, lateral heterophoria was monitored subjectively by an automated version of Duane's screen and parallax test. Adaptation was calculated from the phoria 40 s after the end of binocular vision. Tests were performed at 0.4 m. In the first test session, the

[Binocular functions in unilateral aphakia with intraocular lens, contact lens, and spectacle correction (author's transl)].

The quality of binocular vision in unilateral aphakia was tested in presbyopic patients. 10 of them were corrected by a contact lens, 10 by an intraocular implant. Unilateral aphakic young patients were submitted to the same tests. In the young patients the unilateral accommodation proves to be the main obstacle to binocularity. In the presbyopics there is no difference between intraocular and contact lens correction as to the quality of binocular functions. Which one of these two alternatives for the correction of unilateral aphakia should be preferred in the individual case must, therefore,

Re-evaluation of the four prism diopter base-out test.

The four prism diopter base-out (4 delta BO) test is often recommended for use as an objective assessment of binocular visual function in patients with suspected microstrabismus or central suppression; however, many aspects of the test are unknown. In this series of investigations we evaluated: (1) inter-observer agreement between 2 examiners, using 15 subjects; (2) types of eye movements made and prevalence of the various response types demonstrated in 212 children and 116 adults with normal binocular vision, and 10 children and 4 adults with abnormal binocular vision; and (3) repeatability o

What children see affects how they spell.

The authors predicted that children who have experienced frequent visual confusion of text during their development because of unstable binocular control may be prevented from discovering the rules and patterns of English orthography. The authors compared the spelling errors made by children who had unstable binocular vision with those of children who had stable binocular vision and the same spelling ability. The subjects were drawn from a clinical population of children referred because of suspected reading difficulties; though they were of mixed abilities, they were generally poor spellers a

Peripheral Binocular Imbalance in Anisometropic and Strabismic Amblyopia.

PURPOSE: Individuals with amblyopia experience central vision deficits, including loss of visual acuity, binocular vision, and stereopsis. In this study, we examine the differences in peripheral binocular imbalance in children with anisometropic amblyopia, strabismic amblyopia, and typical binocular vision to determine if there are systematic patterns of deficits across the visual field. METHODS: This prospective cohort study recruited 12 participants with anisometropic amblyopia, 10 with strabismic amblyopia, and 10 typically sighted controls (age range, 5-18 years). Binocular imbalance was

Binocular and monocular measurements of subjective visual vertical in vestibular loss.

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility to omit the time-consuming monocular vision measurement in the subjective visual vertical (SVV) test by demonstrating that there is no difference in the results between binocular and monocular measurements. Thirty-one patients with unilateral vestibular schwannoma and 20 normal subjects as controls were involved. Both binocular and monocular measurements of SVV were performed. The main outcome of this study was the difference in the results of SVV between binocular and monocular measurements. There were no significant differences i

[Contact lens correction of post-traumatic unilateral aphakia. Late visual and orthoptic results].

From 1978 to 1981 total of 122 perforating eye injuries were treated in the eye department of the Salzburg provincial clinic. In 25% of the cases treated the opacified lens had to be removed. The authors followed up 35 patients with unilateral post-traumatic aphakia. Of these, 27 proved suitable candidates for contact lenses. Visual function was good in 15 patients, but reduced in 12 due to post-traumatic changes. Ten patients achieved binocular vision, while in 12 it was possible to restore binocular vision by appropriate measures. The paper deals particular with the restoration of binocular

Bilateral lateral rectus muscle recession versus unilateral lateral rectus recession with medial rectus resection: a 12-month outcome analysis for intermittent exotropia.

BACKGROUND: Intermittent exotropia (IXT) is a common form of strabismus, often treated surgically to improve ocular alignment and binocular vision. This study compares the outcomes of two surgical techniques: bilateral lateral rectus recession (BLRR) and unilateral lateral rectus recession combined with medial rectus muscle resection (ULRRMMR), focusing on sensory eye alignment, stereopsis function, and binocular vision recovery. METHODS: This retrospective study included 306 children with intermittent exotropia, assigned to either the BLRR or ULRRMMR group. Participants were evaluated preope

Cortical correlates of amblyopia.

There are many levels of disorder in amblyopic vision, from basic acuity and contrast sensitivity loss to abnormal binocular vision and global perception of motion and form. Amblyopia treatment via patching to restore acuity often leaves other aspects of vision deficient. The source for these additional deficits is unclear. Neural correlates of poor binocular function and acuity loss are found in V1 and V2. However, they are generally not sufficient to account for behaviorally measured vision loss. This review summarizes the known cortical correlates of visual deficits found in association wit

Double Vision.

When evaluating a patient with a complaint of double vision, it is important to distinguish monocular versus binocular diplopia, which are differentiated by asking the patient to cover each eye separately. In the setting of binocular double vision, one of the two images disappears when either eye is covered, because diplopia is the result of ocular misalignment. On the other hand, monocular double vision resolves when the affected eye is covered, but remains when the opposite eye is occluded. Causes of monocular diplopia include cataract, refractive error, and retinal disease, which can be man

Impaired body balance control in adults with strabismus.

Previous studies revealed that people with binocular vision disorders have poor postural stability. However, most of the research was performed only on children and under binocular viewing condition, that could negatively affect the results. The aim of the current study was to investigate the influence of extra-ocular proprioceptive signals on postural stability in young adults with binocular vision disorders. Moreover, additional mental task was introduced to detect any postural compensation which could possibly hide the real influence of afferent extra-ocular signals. 21 Subjects, aged 18-45

Preference for binocular concordant visual input in early postnatal development remains despite prior monocular deprivation.

Short daily periods of binocular vision, if concordant and continuous, have been shown to outweigh or protect against much longer daily periods of monocular deprivation to allow the development of normal visual acuity in both eyes of kittens. The greater weight placed on binocular visual input could arise because of an inherent bias for binocular input within the visual pathway at all times during development (Binocular model), or else from a more passive process that follows from its match to a highly binocular template at the time mixed daily visual input began (Template model). To distingui

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the characteristics of hypermetropic children whose visual acuity (VA) is declined or accompanied by esotropia. METHODS: One hundred and ninety children were given optometry, strabismus degree and binocular vision measurement. RESULTS: Declined VA appeared in 170 children, while esotropia occurred in 173. Sixty-one got binocular single vision, 17 had fusion function, and 11 had stereoaculty. Spherical equivalent had a linear relationship with VA (P < 0.01), but not with the strabismus degree (P > 0.05). The influence factors of binocular vision were age of discovery
