Diurnal Variation in Accommodation, Binocular Vergence, and Pupil Size.

SIGNIFICANCE: Our results show significant diurnal variations in accommodative function and the magnitude of the phoria. Therefore, when comparing visual measures in clinical or laboratory settings, performing the visual examination at the same time of day (±1 hour) is encouraged. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the accommodation, binocular vergence, and pupil behavior on three different times during the day. METHODS: Twenty collegiate students (22.8 ± 2.1 years) participated in this study. Participants visited the laboratory on three different days at 2-hourly intervals (morn

An investigation of prism adaptation latency.

PURPOSE: The latency of adaptation of the human vergence system to a change in convergence or divergence forced upon it by a prism was investigated in this pilot study. METHODS: Adaptation was stimulated by a 5-s period of binocular vision through a prism of 0 delta, -8 delta, or 8 delta. Immediately thereafter and for a further period of 45 s, lateral heterophoria was monitored subjectively by an automated version of Duane's screen and parallax test. Adaptation was calculated from the phoria 40 s after the end of binocular vision. Tests were performed at 0.4 m. In the first test session, the

Multimodal Imaging in Ocular Siderosis.

PURPOSE: This report aims to characterize ocular changes in a case of ocular siderosis with iron toxicity using multimodal imaging and electroretinography. METHODS: A 34-year-old woman presented with ocular siderosis of the left eye following penetrating injury with an iron-containing foreign body. The patient's uncorrected visual acuities were 20/60 and 20/150 in the right and left eye, respectively, with abnormal pupillary function and presence of a cataract in the left eye. She underwent successful intraocular foreign body removal and cataract surgery with no postoperative complications. C

Comparison of visual performance between peripheral gradient high-addition multifocal soft contact lenses and orthokeratology.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the short-term effects of peripheral gradient high-addition multifocal soft contact lenses (MFSCLs) and orthokeratology (Ortho-K lenses) on visual performance in myopic children. METHODS: Thirty myopic children participated in this prospective study. Each participant wore different sets of lenses in the following sequence: single-vision spectacles (SVSPs) as a control, MFSCLs and Ortho-K lenses. Ocular aberrations, topography, high-contrast visual acuity (HCVA), low-contrast visual acuity (LCVA) and accommodation of the right eye were measured wi

The influence of refractive correction upon disorders of vergence and accommodation.

Clinical care routinely includes prescription of lenses that compensate for the distance refractive error. Indeed, refractive correction is so commonly prescribed that we often neglect its potential effects on disorders of binocular vision. We report improvement of binocular function that resulted 1 or more months after prescription of an initial spectacle correction for 143 nonstrabismic patients who had a refractive error and either a vergence anomaly (28%), an accommodative anomaly (8%), or both (64%). Refractive correction was estimated objectively with an autorefractor and subjectively re

Ocular injury during spine surgery.

PURPOSE: Ocular injury and vision loss are rare complications of surgery. Spine surgery has been identified as particularly high risk for postoperative vision loss; nevertheless, ocular injuries have not been comprehensively assessed in this patient population. METHODS: This historical cohort study assessed incidence, cause, and risk factors of perioperative ocular injury after spine surgery at a tertiary care medical centre from January 1, 2006 through January 31, 2018. Patients were included who had ocular injury identified during an ophthalmology consultation in the first seven postoperati

Orbital Fractures and Risk Factors for Ocular Injury.

PURPOSE: To identify factors predictive of serious ocular injury requiring urgent consultation by ophthalmology in patients presenting with … with an orbital fracture did not require urgent ophthalmologic consultation. The presence of blurry vision, ocular pain, facial pain, poor vision, and afferent pupillary defect significantly increased the odds of severe injury. Abnormal pupillary reaction was associated with both moderate and severe injury.

Statin-associated ocular disorders: the FDA and ADRAC data.

BACKGROUND: Statins are a class of medication indicated for atherosclerotic diseases and dyslipidemia. Since their appearance, many adverse events have been associated with their use. Ocular disorders are rare but serious adverse events of statins. OBJECTIVE: To report the association between statins and ocular adverse events (blurred vision, visual impairment, visual field defect, reduced visual acuity, myopia, hypermetropia, presbyopia, and astigmatism) which might be associated with muscle or liver problems by examining the frequency of ocular adverse events among the reported adverse drug

IMI Accommodation and Binocular Vision in Myopia Development and Progression.

The role of accommodation in myopia development and progression has been debated for decades. More recently, the understanding of the mechanisms involved in accommodation and the consequent alterations in ocular parameters has expanded. This International Myopia Institute white paper reviews the variations in ocular parameters that occur with accommodation and the mechanisms involved in accommodation and myopia development and progression. Convergence is synergistically linked with accommodation and the impact of this on myopia has also been critiqued. Specific topics reviewed included accommo

Adaptation to prism-induced heterophoria in subjects with abnormal binocular vision or asthenopia.

In a previous study we investigated how normal subjects adapted to prism-induced heterophoria. In this study we have continued this work by investigating this phenomena in 15 patients with abnormal binocular vision and/or asthenopia. It was found that the majority of subjects lacked or had a deficient adaptation system to base-in and/or base-out prisms, but all except two subjects examined adapted normally to vertical prism. These results suggest that it may be possible to treat the horizontal adaptation system independently from the vertical one. Prism vergences, heterophoria measurements, an

Childhood eye examination.

Vision screening in children is an ongoing process, with components that should occur at each well-child visit. The purpose is to detect risk factors and visual abnormalities that necessitate treatment and to identify those patients who require referral to an ophthalmologist skilled in examining children. Screening can reveal conditions commonly treated in primary care and can aid in discussion of visual concerns with parents or caregivers. Vision screening begins with a review of family and personal vision history to identify risk factors requiring referral, including premature birth, Down sy

Nanocarriers for the Delivery of Neuroprotective Agents in the Treatment of Ocular Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Retinal neurodegeneration is considered an early event in the pathogenesis of several ocular diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. At present, there is no definitive treatment to prevent the progression or reversal of vision loss caused by photoreceptor degeneration and the death of retinal ganglion cells. Neuroprotective approaches are being developed to increase the life expectancy of neurons by maintaining their shape/function and thus prevent the loss of vision and blindness. A successful neuroprotective approach could prolong patients' vis
