Vision and eye health: moving into the digital age with instrument-based vision screening.

Significant advancements in vision screening research are leading to improved design, functionality, and reliability of screening tools. Presently, two vision screening approaches are available to school nurses for children ages 3 years and older: optotype-based screening and instrument-based screening. Optotype-based screening pertains to tests of visual acuity using optotypes (e.g., pictures, letters, and numbers), which children identify to determine visual acuity. Instrument-based screening pertains to automated devices that measure amblyogenic risk factors, such as refractive error, media

Low Vision and Dry Eye: Does One Diagnosis Overshadow the Other?

SIGNIFICANCE: The prevalence of dry eye disease and low vision increases with age; they share risk factors and can be the result of underlying common causes. They are generally studied separately; however, combining these perspectives is relevant for research on assistive technology given that sustained focus affects the tear film because of decreased blinking rates. PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to elucidate to which extent dry eye disease risk factors, signs, and symptoms are assessed in low vision patients who receive an eye examination as part of their vision rehabilitation ser

ERG in amaurosis fugax, depending on the position of the body. A case presentation.

A woman, aged 57, reported a considerable loss of vision in her right eye within approx. 60s after lying down. She regained her vision in the upright position within approx. 90s. The Ganzfeld ERG, recorded in the upright position, showed a moderately reduced amplitude, but was entirely absent when recorded in the supine position, closely correlated to the subjective fading of the vision. Although all other clinical tests revealed no further hint to the cause of this remarkable amaurosis fugax, a temporary hypoxy of the retina due to circulatory deficiencies is suspected.

[Binocular vision in concomitant strabismus].

It was discovered that in a small angle concomitant squint there occurs a kind of binocular vision maintained by abnormal retinal correspondence. This phenomenon may be discovered by a campimetric examination, by VEP and by other psychophysical tests. There appear accomodational movements which tend to maintain a stable angle of deviation which enables a binocular vision. Analysis of these movements is presented.

Contrast sensitivity in evaluation of visual impairment due to macular degeneration and optic nerve lesions.

Spatial contrast sensitivity was investigated in a group of 17 patients with macular degeneration or optic atrophy. It has been reported earlier that patients with optic atrophy may have reduced contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies without decrease of visual acuity, a phenomenon called 'hidden visual loss'. The present study shows that also the opposite may be true: patients with macular degeneration or optic atrophy may have greatly decreased visual acuity and yet normal or nearly normal contrast sensitivity at low spatial frequencies and reasonably good sensitivity at intermediate

Patient Factors Associated With Vision Complaints in Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Introduction Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), formerly known as pseudotumor cerebri, is characterized by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and papilledema in the absence of focal neurological deficits or structural brain abnormalities. This study aimed to describe the demographic and clinical characteristics of a sample of patients with IIH and examine associations between visual complaints and various demographic, clinical, and ophthalmologic variables. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study included 106 patients diagnosed with IIH in a neurology practice in the Southe

Visual field defects in albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo).

The extent of the horizontal visual field was determined behaviourally in 4 pigmented and 5 albino ferrets (Mustela putorius furo, Carnivora, Mammalia) using perimetry. During binocular vision, all pigmented and three albino ferrets responded equally well to stimuli presented anywhere along the horizontal perimeter in the central 180 degrees of the visual field. The remaining two albinos had a visual field defect in the right hemifield (>30 degrees eccentricity). During monocular vision, a significant difference between the visual fields of pigmented and albino ferrets became apparent. In pigm

Squint--what to do and when.

Squint is unfortunately a neglected subject in our country. It is considered only a cosmetic problem without realising that any manifest squint is a one eyed blindness which results in lack of binocular vision. Consequently there is no stereopsis. The management should be undertaken at the earliest possible age when development of uni-ocular as well as binocular vision is taking place. Once the visual system is mature, only cosmetic appearance can be improved, but not the vision.

Impact of uncorrected refractive errors on eye-related quality of life and functional vision in a cohort of African children.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of refractive errors on functional vision and eye-related quality of life (QoL) in a cohort of African children, using the Pediatric Eye Questionnaire (PedEyeQ). METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving 169 children aged 5-17 years (97 with refractive errors and 72 visually normal controls) and their parents/guardians. Refractive errors were classified based on cycloplegic refraction. The PedEyeQ was administered through interviewer-assisted sessions to assess functional vision and psychosocial well-being across chil

Color Vision Deficits and Binocular Vision Dysfunction in Parkinson's Disease.

Background/Objectives: Visual dysfunction is a common non-motor symptom in Parkinson's Disease (PD), as evidenced by deficits in color vision (CV) and binocular vision (BV). Computerized CV tests, such as the Cambridge Color Test (CCT), are underutilized in this patient population despite the known limitations of common CV tests. Methods: In total, 19 PD and 12 control participants underwent a comprehensive eye exam, including ocular motility testing and the CCT, utilizing thresholds obtained along 12 contrast vectors to fit a discrimination ellipse. Findings were compared across groups, and t

Visual-field measurements and driving eligibility.

BACKGROUND: A 50-year-old black man with an ocular history of open-angle glaucoma was seen for a vision rehabilitation examination, with goals of improving his vision for work and determining his eligibility for driving. He was referred to the clinic through state services for the visually impaired. METHODS: A low-vision evaluation was performed and baseline information was obtained, including distance- and near-visual acuities, visual fields, and subjective refraction. This information was used to determine if he was eligible for services and if any low-vision devices would benefit him. RES

Review of guidelines for children's vision screenings.

The aim of children's vision screenings is to detect visual problems that are common in this age category through valid and reliable tests. Nevertheless, the cost effectiveness of paediatric vision screenings, the nature of the tests included in the screening batteries and the ideal screening age has been the cause of much debate in Australia and worldwide. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to report on the current practice of children's vision screenings in Australia and other countries, as well as to evaluate the evidence for and against the provision of such screenings. This was unde

Contrast and glare testing in keratoconus and after penetrating keratoplasty.

AIM: To compare the performance of keratoconus, penetrating keratoplasty (PK), and control subjects on clinical tests of contrast and glare vision, to determine whether differences in vision were independent of visual acuity (VA), and thereby establish which vision tests are the most useful for outcome studies of PK for keratoconus. METHODS: All PK subjects had keratoconus before grafting and no subjects had any other eye disease. The keratoconus (n = 11, age 35.0 (SD 11.1) years), forme fruste keratoconus (n = 6, 33.0 (13.0)), PK (n = 21, 41.2 (7.9)), and control (n = 24, 33.7 (8.6)) groups …

Deficiency of adaptive control of the binocular coordination of saccades in strabismus.

Disconjugate (different in the two eyes) oculomotor adaptation is driven by the need to maintain binocular vision. Since binocular vision is deficient in strabismus, we wondered whether oculomotor disconjugate adaptive capabilities are deficient in such subjects. We studied eight adult subjects with constant, long-standing convergent strabismus of variable angles (4-30 prism D). No subject had severe amblyopia. Binocular vision was evaluated with stereoacuity tests. Two subjects had peripheral binocular vision and gross stereopsis; two other subjects had abnormal retinal correspondence and abn
